The novel that almost single-handedly started the Cyberpunk literary genre, finally getting its due in movie-form, just went completely in the toilet.

Brace yourself.

I'm not kidding, grab an armrest or something.

Hayden Christensen has been cast to play Case in the upcoming Neuromancer film.

This is some kind of joke. William Gibson, despite being one of the most influential authors of the late 20th Century, gets TWO films made (first being the awful Johnny Mnemonic, the short story that developed into the novel Neuromancer), and for lead acting talent he gets Keanu Reeves and HAYDEN FARKING CHRISTENSEN. What obscure movie god did William pee on or something?!

I can't wait to see Hayden turn Case (a soulless shell of a man nursing what's left of his brilliant but burnt-out brain stem) into a mewling, petulant little bitch. In the words of Zoe, "OH YEAH, THIS IS GONNA GO GREAT."

Someone needs to contact the Wachowski Brothers and make them give William another $10-15mil so he can hire a real actor. I mean, the entire Matrix film was a complete ripoff of Gibson's works (the first one, when it was good). They owe him!

To borrow the most abysmal line from one of the most horrific travesties of hollywood in the past couple years..

Ok, Reeves can NOT act, I call him little wooden face boy cause he has all the facial mobility of fekkin pinoccio and the emotional range of a three toed sloth burned out on quaaludes.

And seeing what they did to Johnny Mnemonic just made me wanna hurl - if they want something THAT awful just hire that twit Uwe Boll and be DONE with it, at least it'll be OVER quick.. oh the pain, the painnnnn...

Now, you MIGHT salvage things by getting Reeves to play Armitage, who's a soulless emotionless shell overtop the seemingly destroyed persona of Col Corto, THAT might work, sure...

But if they HAVE to use Hayden, good gawd awmighty make him freakin Rivera, you know ?

But that would presume hollywood had some SENSE.

FYI, this particulur storyline always totally wigs me out since when I read the descriptions of the Finn it was like staring into a mirror that added a decade or so, right down to the crumbling junkpile that is the back of my garage.

I also don't see how they could cast anyone but Michelle Rodriguez as Molly Millions, our much beloved recurring and ubiquitous sadistic bitch... oh how I adore her (either one, both even!).

I really do think they should pick an up and coming nearly-nobody for Case tho, and back him with more experienced actors, because in the story Case is more of a passive observer who serves as the pole that all these events revolve around.

I find myself kinda curious who they'll get to voice Dixie Flatline, and who they'll get to play Maelcum.

Knowing hollywood though, they'll botch it so completely that I would not willingly subject myself to it.

Sprawl fan?! NO WAY! :D

The thing that bothers me most is Hayden doesn't even LOOK the part. Remotely. Case is thin, tall, gaunt, etc etc. He's basically Gibson himself. Boy-band looks do not fit.

Good picks in your casting! I hadn't thought about the voice for Dixie..I wonder if they'll go cheesy and just digitize some schlub's voice. They actually have a budget ($70m), so they can afford to hire decent-enough actors.

Funny aside about Keanu Reeves, I lived in Wilmington, NC about 8 or so years ago..Wilmington was known as "The Hollywood of the East" in the late 80's/early 90's, since they filmed so many tv shows there..it had a thriving acting community (still does to a degree) and Keanu lived there in the Bill n Ted days. When I was there, any time some new-to-town actor would come in and think they were completely awesome (even though they sucked), all the REALLY old-school townies would fawn on them for awhile telling them they were "just as good as Keanu.."...since they all knew Keanu, and how awful he really was. Was a funny insider thingy.

But the worstpart of the Johnny Mnemonic movie is that William Gibson was the Screenwriter for it....

And I vote for Milla Jovovich as Molly Millions...
( Billy Bob thornton as Case)...

And let's have lots of fun, How about a movie adaption of Burning Chrome ( to see where Case starts from!)

Yep, enough of one to have caught all the little crossover and foreshadowing touches throughout the novels, up till virtual light, which seemed kinda post-peak for Gibson and I wanna remember him for quality work, if you understand.

Molly's been a fav of mine throughout the series, with Finn coming in close second, especially when he busts poor little newmarks chops, I was literally bent over the book cackling, having been on the giving end of those conversations myself.
(I know how to collate punch cards, and I HATE windows Vista, if that gives you any idea...)

Let's see... casting, since we got two..
This is an ideal, mind, but I think it's workable.

Case - Some nearly-nobody, late 20's with a gaunt, hungry look.

Armitage - Keanu Reeves

Rivera - Hayden Christensen

Molly - Michelle Rodriguez

Finn - Judd Hirsch

Ashpool - John Travolta
(is it just me that cheered when he died, and stupidly, in Pulp fiction? let's kill him some more!)

3Jane - Raquel Alessi

Marie-France Tessier - Gates McFadden

Maelcum - Ice-T

Dixie Flatline - Chris Edgerly

Hideo - Yuen Biao

You might have to look some of those up, but that's who I would go with.

Feel free to continue discussing other Sprawl stuff in-depth if you like, I know to date only ONE other person who even can, and he's a young bonehead a'la Newmark, a total wilson, flash ?

Well, maybe Jovovich could work, Molly is described as having a vagely euro look to her, but thing is, if you read all the stuff in depth, Molly is an actual downright sadist who gets off on hurting people, and I dunno if Jovovich could quite carry that off as well as Rodriguez...

Depends on how they want her to come across, but for a straight translation of the character, I'd go with someone... nasty.

I just can't imagine Jovovich "interrogating" Prior in Mona Lisa Overdrive, but I can damn sure see Rodriguez doin it.

To give a different perspective I never read the book and it still horrifies me how anyone could cast Hayden in anything. It pains me to see his name let alone attempt to watch the torture that is his acting.

Just had an idea. Let's send him to the CIA and they can just let him put on shows for detainees until they crack and spill their guts. No physical harm done(except bleeding from all orifices) and it's not technically torture. Is it?

Good point. I'll give the guy the benefit of the doubt. I guess it's very possible he can actually act, just that he hasn't been meshed with the proper team yet.

I agree with Jossisagod. Mr Lucas does many things well, but directing actors (or allowing the actors to act) is not one of them. After seeing Hayden in another movie, "Life as a House", I think it becomes fairly obvious that he actually is pretty good.

That, my friend, is just wrong. An influential and note-worthy SCIENCE FICTION writer yes, but in the broader sense of all the authors of the late 20th Century, hardly. Besides, I think Card is by far the best scifi novelist sense Heinlein, unless you count Vonnegut who just blows both of them out of the water and is definitely one of the most important writers of the entire 20th century and produced probably the best book of that century, being Cat's Cradle.

Give him a chance; Hayden's not that bad an actor (I've seen some of his other roles). It's Lucas who can't write dialogue or direct to save his planet.

And AotC Anakin was plenty thin and gaunt --he bulked up for RotS. I'm guessing he'll drop weight for this (and don't underestimate the influence of makeup, lighting, and film stock to emphasize sunken cheeks and sleep-deprived eyes).

Trivia: Hayden once appeared alongside our own Jewel Stait on the TV series Higher Ground.

I'll let ya get down off the -major soap box, and step up onto my -post-graduate one. :P

Gibson's influence goes far, FAR beyond that of OSC. OSC is an heir to the Arthur C. Clarke, Asimov and Heinlein style of "hard" science fiction. Gibson is something completely different..and no novel SINCE 2001 or Gravity's Rainbow has influenced the direction of the genre as much as Neuromancer.

Gibson;s novel changed an industry, and brought legitimacy to a fledgling genre. Is he as influential in the literary world at large as Vonnegut, Morrison, Kerouac? Of course not. But in the pool of published authors from the late 20th, his is a name that stands out.

Give the man a bit of credit. :)

I suppose we're arguing more about what "one of the most influential" entails more than anything. His body of work is not huge, and includes some stinkers (The Difference Engine or, "How to put your brain to sleep"), but THAT NOVEL is an important part of literary history, if not an incredibly known one.
