Pulp-science fiction quality. Which reminds me Stargate Atlantis is what Flash Gordon wants to be... when it grows up and stops smelling of garbage and moldy cheese. Honestly, how Scifi ever justified ordering a full season of that travesty I'll never know. I just hope the newest Scifi series, Warehouse 13 is a lot better. Though considering that our very own Jane Espenson is a writer I'm somewhat sure it will be. I think the idea comes from the end of Raider's of the Lost Ark where they store the Ark in a huge warehouse... (Rambles on aimlessly through the wee hours of the morning)... South Dakota....

To get back on track. I can see Atlantis continuing for a few more seasons. I'd say it's a safe bet it will run at least as long as SG1... though it will probably have the same ups and downs SG1 had in it's final seasons. Some good and some very bad. I'm looking forward to next weeks Atlantis with it's guest star gating over from SG1 history. Is it just me or does Teal'c appear to now have dreads?!?! We shall see. And now I'm answering myself which means I need sleep or I'm channeling a Politician... either way it's a bad thing.

Oh one last thing... and a spoiler alert so all you still in season one do not highlight the following...

Select to view spoiler:

Possible love triangle between Jennifer, Rodney and Ronon??!??!??! Or am I just misreading Dr. Keller's friendly flirting at the end of the last episode?

Ok end of spoilers...

Nonono, it must stay good consistently!!!!

More reviews:
POISONING THE WELL was SO well written...it was everything good SF is about- great metaphors to examine the human condition...the cycle of hate that consumes...

UNDERGROUND was okay, great to see a Trek regular on it...

HOME was fabulous, I love those 'you can go home but you can't go home' stories. Plus- misty peeps is a cool idea.

One thing, when alien peeps in Voyager or TNG all speak English, I cringe, in SGA I find it easier to wrap my head around- I guess it's the pulp-science fiction quality to it, and the cool sense of humour...

Glad you're liking it so far. Seeing some of the episode reminders means I might just have to make these seasons my next purchases.

The language thing was never really something that bugged me, although I thought about it and I could understand others not liking it. One thing that did bug me was in ST where they had the Univeral Translator and the fact that it could understand any language immediately, and relate it back to the alien. I thought that was a bit of a stretch sometimes.
At least with the SG series the people are offshoots of humans, but yes it would be nice from time to time to have a racce speak an unknown language. This was touched on more in SG1 but even then Daniel soon sorted it all out.

SGA episodes to look out for:
Seige
Allies
No Mans Land
Grace Under Pressure
Common Ground
Return
The Tao Of Rodney

That's just the ones where I can remember the titles!

THE STORM/THE EYE...omG was this two-parter GREAT!!!!! Robert Davi is such a cool bad guy, and Sheppard pulls an intergalactic Die Hard on those idiots sent by the guy from Underground!!!! These two eps alone were worth the price of the set!

THE DEFIANT ONE was a fast paced and sort of spooky Predator-sort of confrontation...Sheppard is seeming more and more like a young Kirk to me...

He really is isn't he? Mainly due to his being the quintessential action hero, brains meets skill and brawn. He's proven many times he's just as smart as Rodney if not as educated.

Personally I believe he's an even better Hero type than Kirk. Also being portrayed by a better actor helps. No intentional knocks to the Shat but I've never been a huge fan of his.

I do believe Rodney calls him Kirk at least once.

BEFORE I SLEEP was a good solid time travel story (that broke the rules of causality and paradox, but wtf). The Delorean lines were funny, lol.

THE BROTHERHOOD was NOT BAD, and anytime Robert Davi appears is golden.

LETTERS FROM PEGASUS was a standard not-standard episode where peeps talk to the camera so we get to know them better. Enjoyable.

SGA.... well both Stargate series, like any good scifi continuously break and rebreak the laws of physics. At least they do it in a fun way and actually spend the smallest amount of time explaining why. They could do a whole lot worse. They pretty much have their own set of rules and only break the laws in a way that can be called idiotic on one or two occasions. For instance last weeks episode of Atlantis.... um seriously? I will not even try to explain or even try to figure out what they were thinking. A rare example of an episode that despite the good banter I could do without. Sad to say. The rest of the season so far has been really good and yet just a teensy bit disappointing.

I read that a lot of cast members had issues and stuff and weren't available at some times, hence the 'filler' type episodes. Plus Higginson won't be around for the fifth season that just started shooting, so a little more difficulty there...
But the show's characters are what I watch it for, not the science or whatever- I think it rocks! It's like a lightweight cross between Voyager & Firefly to me.

THE GIFT was another interesting entry- Taylor's past & geneology were cool.

SEIGE pt. 1 has me goin'...more later.

NEEDY

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

Hey all. This thread couldn't have come at a better time, as I'm really falling in love with this show
I watched SG-1 religiously but only watched the first few SGA episodes (mainly due to lack of time than a dislike for the show) I caught the tail end of season 1 during repeats then stopped again.
Now, missing Stargate, I've recently started watching again, the middle of season 4 no less.
The first one I saw (don't know the names, but it was the third part of a story involving finding a wraith hive) I didn't like but each episode since has got better and better

Even though it was pretty much a bottle episode, I LOVED the last one "Trio". It had plenty of Jewel Staite , Carter and Rodney, who is just the best character EVER!
I also sensed that maybe the writers are leading to a triangle of sorts with Ronon, Rodney and Keller. Not exactly a bad thing if we're gonna get more of Jewel, who I must add looks even hotter than ever nowadays!

I agree, Jewel is hot, but I also liked her better on Firefly when she had a bit more weight on her. Sorry I just don't really think skinny women as as attractive as those with some weight. Don't take that to mean I'm into the obese... I mean a good healthy weight.

Anyway, I loved the banter in Trio. Unfortunately the fact that they seemed to presume the audience had the intelligence of a dog sorta seemed to turn me off. I can see a show not holding up the the intelligence of a real life Physicist but a geek with barely more than a High school education shouldn't be able to see the flaws so easily. This episode just left a sour taste in my mouth is all. Had a bunch of good laughs and quite a few chuckles. Sadly, for me, it doesn't make up for the bad... which pisses me off as much as I'm sure it does my fellow fans. I really wish I could have enjoyed it as much as the rest of you seem to.

Good news is it looks like they may make up for it tonight with Teal'c visiting. If last weeks "Trio" filler episode is the worst SGA ever gets it'll still be better than anything a Trek series has ever done.

I started an entire thread about Space Cases. I didn't watch much past the start of season two but I remember being a bit mad they took Jewel off. I guess I've been a fan of hers since then. I watch Firefly and knew she looked familiar and about the time I'd watched the pilot for the third time I figured it out.

Oh and The Siege is a great episode isn't it? Interesting what happens to Lt. Ford.

Oh and also...

Last night's Atlantis has given me new hope that it's not just devolving into a parody of SG1. It was easily one of the best episodes to date. Everyone had a good part except for a few of the best recurring characters... though Chuck and Lee did get a few good lines. As did Cavanagh but we all hate him since he's either an ass or an idiot every moment on screen. Still it was interesting to see him again after so long.

Also 157 old Teal'c with long hair=women swooning and thrusting themselves upon him. Seriously.

Oh and let's all please use spoiler brackets when talking about major plot points from the series. We got folks still in Season 1/2 who might not want stuff like that ruined. I might start my own thread for discussion of spoilers... or just go to the Atlantis boards... which I've never been to.

Which goes to show just because we are Browncoats doesn't mean we all like the same stuff. I personally cannot stand Torchwood or Doctor Who... and don't even get my started on BSG. I tried very hard to enjoy all three, even watching long after what I'd consider torture. I stuck with BSG into the first half of the second season and still to this day attempt to watch Doctor Who. I just can't see what anyone could like about them. Still if so many good people love them I'll believe they're really good shows.

I'm not saying SGA is without flaws, or even that it has fewer. Just saying I can enjoy Atlantis but find the humor and quirkiness of Torchwood and Doctor Who to be overwhelming and the bleak, relatively humorless atmosphere of BSG to be annoying and depressing. Not to mention a certain actress who I don't think should even be in the business. The Stargate Universe has had it's fair share of shoddy acting but at least none of those where regulars. At least not the really bad ones.

So I guess what I'm getting at is this. Why do you like Torchwood so much? Is it a cultural thing? Like when people would smoke just because it was "cool"? Is it an acquired taste or am I just missing something? Same question for BSG.

Anyway back on topic, sorta. Is it just me or does Scifi really screw it's viewers when it comes to upcoming episode promos for Atlantis? The most recent seemed to be built around some surprise the viewer could never guess at... and what do they do? They ruin the last five minutes and actually even state "You'll never believe what happens in the last five minutes!" Ummm... yes I can, seeing as you just showed me you idiots! This has actually been going on for sometime, I remember this problem with SG1, it's just lately it seems to be getting much worse. For the entire season they've ruined the largest plot twist for nearly every episode. I'm considering emailing them and asking to get in touch with the idiot who does the promos. Ofcourse I'd word that a bit differently. Also it wouldn't be as big a problem if they didn't show them four-five times an hour during every show for the entire week.

P.S. I know not a big deal but it's just been pissing me off for awhile.

P.S.S I noticed my BSG, Doctor Who and Torchwood comments could be taken wrongly as offense. I'll reiterate that I've really, really tried to like them. I'm mostly just perplexed as to how I can't and so many can. Also I've been in a somewhat foul mood lately due to "life issues" so I apologize.

Exactly how I feel. I'm sorry about my other post. I don't hate either show or think anyone is stupid for liking them. Like you said, it's in the eye of the beholder.

In the spirit of this I'm going to come out as well and admit right now that I really don't care much for Buffy or Angel. I respect the awesome Jossness of both shows and I don't hate them. It's just something about the goofy latex and that I've never been too fond of the campiness.

Anyway, to try once again to keep the thread on topic. Did anyone see today's rerun of Atlantis? "Lost Boys" ain't a bad episode. Not the best of season two by far but still not bad. I hear Ford might pop up again in the coming seasons. I also wouldn't doubt if we never see him again. It's a big Universe. Time will tell, and so will the promos the week before the episode airs. I'm sure.

Although I don't want it the thread to go too far off topic, I'm with you Strangebird on Torchwood. I just haven't been taken with it. to be honest I haven't watched a whole lot of epiosde. I did watch the recent season 2 premiere and thought it was ok at best. I do have the following eps recorded, I just cant motivate myself to give it another chance

For me, Dr Who is at times the best thing on tv and the worst. I can understand why people don't like it cos IMO there's been some terrible episodes, and I can understand why people like it (Blink is without a doubt one of the greatest episodes of any tv show ever). I just don't understand those who love it to pieces and think its the greatest show ever. Have they not seen the dud episodes?

As for Battlestar... You're on your own there. I think its one of the greatest shows on the air at the minute

After Lost.

Back on topic...

I thought the latest ep of SGA was quite good.
I don't particularly like the Wraith as villains. They look cool, but the voices just make them sound like a lame Goauld rip-off. Is there a law in the Stargate universe that big bads have to sound like that?
This ep wasn't so bad though. The Wraith didn't do a whole lot of talking, just shooting and dying. Plus it was good to see Teal'c back in action, and those fight scenes (both in the practice room and later at the SGC) were pretty brutal.
I want more!

Well you can count me on my own in regards to Lost as well. I quit watching that show at the end of last season. It's a waste of effort and time. Which are two things I don't like to waste anymore of. It started off promising but it's sad they just devolved into a show that's trying to be more deep and meaningful than what the writers are capable of doing. So they just make it look smart and not actually do anything. Sorta like a politician. Oh sure they sound pretty(usually) but that just means they are just talking BS. But hey like I said to each his/her own. I do love some of the acting that show had and a handful of characters are better than the show deserves. The writers definitely have a lot of skill and talent, as do the actors. I just feel it's wasted more than it succeeds.

Anyway, I'd forgotten how much I loved the recently rerun episode of Atlantis. Rodney getting high on the Wraith enzyme was priceless and another example of how amazing David Hewlett is. Also John's flight in the Dart was great, even the one bit that they nearly copied a style and scene from Star Wars. Radek had a good bit, Caldwell and Lorne did as well. Chuck was in it, though at this point I don't think he had a name officially. It was only recently made "canonically" official when Carter called him that on one of the last couple eps. He's been on the show since season one I believe and in season two took over a chief gate tech. So he's seen a lot just not heard or mentioned much. I think he's actually not credited for a good number of the episodes he is actually in. Anyway when Atlantis does it right they REALLY do it right.

A good episode of Atlantis is better than a great episode of TNG. A great episode of Atlantis, for me anyway, is nearly on par with an episode of Firefly... note I said NEARLY. Nothing will ever touch Firefly for me. It's become more to me than what it's bits and pieces make it out to be. I'm incapable of fairly judging it.

Count me in on that too, as regards to LOST.

Initially, I was mightily intrigued. The suspense was killing me! How on Earth-That-Is were they gonna explain these bizarre phenomena?? Dark, animated smoke that attacks people? If you can't walk... well, one day you crash on an island and you get up anyway! It all kept me on the edge of my seat. Then one day the dime dropped: there wasn't gonna be any resolution! To any of it. All the suspense was just there for the sake of suspense. I felt duped. Really cheated. They even went so far as to introduce (unexplained) time-travel.

See, there's where I get off. Such suspense, IMHO, is really only acceptable when there's a resolution on the horizon. And you keep watching cuz, not understanding, you figure it's gonna be a really clever one! Gots to be! Only to find out you've been had. And I've had it with being had.

Anyway, so I guess you've already watched the episode with Teyla singing then Chrisisall? She's got a beautiful voice. Overall season 2 is probably the best of the series so far. It's got it all. I still love the rest of the show but season 2 has more of my favorites than any other.

I liked Ford but Ronon Dex is a combination of brilliant character design and perfect casting. Those dreads are real. Only thing about him I don't like is the skull dread ring. I can see Ronon liking it but I think it's a bit much.

Do not read below unless your ready for a spoiler. It's not a huge one but one I accidentally stumbled on and pertains to Ronon in season 5.

Select to view spoiler:

BTW Jason Momoa has cut his dreads off. He says they were getting to be a pain and interfering with his daily activities. Not to mention being really heavy and causing some neck pain. They'll be attached via an agonizingly long process for the first episode of season five and then afterwards Ronon will most likely have shorter hair. Believe me I've seen pics and he still looks like a bad ass, just a bit more civilized one.

Please post any remarks to this in spoiler brackets... some folks might care. I don't, it's not a huge spoiler, but still.

I recently converted some family and friends to SGA, and we all sat and watched through them together—it was almost like watching them again for the first time. So many jewels I had forgotten about! Now there's nothing to do but wait a week between episodes, though, so I'm watching SG-1 and Farscape in between. The latter—I'm a bit "meh" about, like the new BSG. SG-1, though...never was a fan before, but after getting through the first two seasons, it started to grow on me, and I'm pretty hooked now at the end of season 5. Atlantis is better from the beginning in both storyline and character development, but it was also made later and many of the writers started writing for SG-1. Both Stargate shows have helped to fill that void in my life that lack of Firefly created...can't entirely compare, of course, but I don't need that.

Stargate captures, better than alot of scifi, the extended family feel. With characters in tough moral and political predicaments having to work together and deal with one another to get by. It's not at all Firefly but it's in the same vein so to speak. Stargate does tend to have a more military feel to it at times than alot of TV Scifi. Mainly due to the involvement of the Air Force. They've had a couple of Generals on as themselves as well as a whole lot of extras who are actually Air Force personnel. Adds a bit of realism to the crazy stuff that goes on at Cheyenne Mountain and Atlantis. Add to it the great guest stars they've had, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite(Before she became a regular), Dom Deluise(No surprise as his sons have all worked on the show, one being a director and writer I think) and quite a few others I can't think of at the moment. It's had it's share of bumps and a handful of crappy episodes on both series but as far as Scifi goes Stargate falls in at number 2 for Atlantis and number 3 for SG-1... 1 ofcourse being Firefly. For me anyway, don't get your knickers in a twist if you disagree.

One of these days I'll stop ranting about Stargate but I don't see that coming to pass anytime too soon.

Good job on the converts MerryK. Do they watch Firefly too? If you haven't seen it Eureka is also a great show to watch to sate a bit of Scifi, comedy, drama cravings. I as well am not a Farscape lover but I do enjoy the show most of the time. BSG and me do not get along together. I respect it though and we've both agreed to disagree.

Oh yeah, Firefly was the first thing I introduced them to... Now I get them sidling up to me when we see each other and saying: "So, find anything else cool for me to watch?"

Yeah, that was great- Teyla is like, my second favourite character.
And when Sheppard said "I saw it in a movie once", I almost choked with laughter...(Yes, I bought season 3; try not to faint...).

ROFLMAO!!

Brilliant.
I can imagine the characters saying these lines perfectly.
I'm not really a fanfic person but this crossover might make a good one if someone where up for writing it. Unless someone has.

I'm actually one of the fans who likes BSG because it is gloomy and miserable (amongst other reasons). I don't see why all shows have to have a sense of humour, like there is some kind of pattern or template to follow that says you can have the serious episodes but you need the light hearted ones as well.
Having said that the humour of SGA is one of the main reasons that draws me to that show.
It's the main reason I kept watching Supernatural in the beginning. It's one of my favourite things about Joss's shows and many others.

Also I think if Ronon ever came face to face with the Toasters then they would regret ever being made. Ronon would kick their arse (ass to you US folks).

In point of fact, I think BSG's characters ARE more realistic than SGA's, I just got irked that he was sayin' all how BSG was a better show- they each have something to offer the viewer, and diversity is a good thing.

But SGA bees more funisall

I get your point and respect it. It's still the main reason I do not like BSG. I get enough gloomy and miserable from the daily news and hearing from my sister down in Georgia whose going through a divorce. With two great young boys and a worthless husband who deserves words I won't say on this board, on top of a drag into the woods followed by a sound beating or two(if you knew him you'd agree). So you can understand how I get too much gloomy and miserable. I watch TV to escape my life. And to laugh... which I can always use more of even though my pets and family make me do it daily.

All said though what I have endured of BSG was well written and for the most part decently acted. I now vow to not say anything else about BSG unless I feel it absolutely necessary.

Anyway two more episodes of Season 4 remain. A whole lot is about the change. Next season a couple characters will have reduced rolls and yet others will become permanent regulars. I won't ruin anything but yes it looks like Jewel might get her face and name in the opening credits! YEAH! It's so gorram pretty how could they not? Also there's a rumor going about that Robert Picardo will also become a regular. Having already been recurring as IOA lackey but overall good hearted tight-ass Richard (Dick) Woolsey. Ofcourse that's just rumor, though Wikipedia does sorta confirm it as well as give a few spoilers so steer clear. I made that mistake once and I won't again. Also looks like a couple all new recurring characters, one military one civilian will be joining the expedition.

That's as spoiler free as a Season 5 update comes and honestly I don't know much more than that and I'm keeping it that way. I wish they'd announce an air date for Scifi Channel sometime soon. Hopefully it's only late spring and not sometime in the summer.

Edit: What am I saying? I meant Hopefully it's only late SUMMER and not sometime in FALL. Would be nice if it started in like May or something....

Also some news for you BSG fans. I just remembered it. I'll put it in spoiler brackets so it's your choice. It's not a huge bit but just the name of an actress you may recognize.

Select to view spoiler:

Leela Savasta, also known as Tracey Anne on BSG.
She'll be joing the SGA cast as a recurring in season 5.

SATEDA was simply awesome- one of THE BEST eps so far IMO!!! Ronon has taken on a fully human dimension for me now, plus: cool photography & editing. It was movie-quality TV. I loved the way Ronon was almost crying from the pain, but not of his leg- it was a moment where he allowed himself to feel his remembered loss in the guise of physical duress. Probably the only time he ever truly let his full feelings on the matter through in any real way..

PROGENY was fascinating and well acted & directed- this show just rocks (what's BSG again...?)

THE REAL WORLD was an obvious lift from a Buffy ep where she had a similar hard time from the world of magicks, but still, I liked it a lot.

At the rate your going by the start of season 5 you'll be up to date.
But will this mean you'll watch it when it airs or will you still wait for the DVDs. I seem to remember you prefer watching TV on DVD.

That's if you ever come down from your high.

Yeah I would go with BSGs characters being more realistic than SGA but then it's not really the same type of show, is it, despite their obvious similarities.
As for better, I still wouldn't be certain, again because of their differences.
As for which I prefer, that would probably come down to whichever is showing at that time (so SGA at the moment). But I do have all of BSG on DVD but no SGA (yet). Maybe the answer is there.

For STRANGEBIRD

I can completely understand why people can't get into BSG because of the way it's made and because it's humourless. It can be a difficult show to watch at times. On several occasions I've found myself wanting to watch something lighter after an episode (Red Dwarf or Spaced usually do the trick). The real life gloom and doom doesn't help either and, as you say, TV is an escape away from reality, not something to remind you of it.

Jewel becoming a regular is great news and well deserved. Robert Picardo as well hopefully (he was the best character in Voyager, IMO), and is always a joy to watch.

And I'm also looking forward to the last couple of episodes. I've been kind of getting the feeling that we may be in store for a shock. Not just a cliffhanger but a real Woah! WTF moment. Don't know why I think that but I do.

I prefer commercial-less DVD, but if I get the SciFi channel (a possibility), I'll HAVE to watch as it comes out! (and BSG too, btw).

I wouldn't say BSG is completely humorless

I am thinking of a scene where Col Tigh is reporting on a fleet wide food shortage. Adm Adama asks if the rumors that people are starting to eat paper, and Tigh says " No, theres also a paper shortage "

Dark humor yes, but I did nearly fall off the couch.

Chris, I also though SATEDA was one of the best TV eps I have watched... anyshow. I would put it up with Out of Gas which is also a favorite.

The Alliance said they were gonna waltz through Serenity Valley. And we choked 'em with those words. We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.

I agree Lwaves, He was. I was never a huge fan of Voyager but when he first appeared on SG-1 as Woolsey, evaluating the SGC and it's personnel, I thought "cool". He's a great actor. He really pulls off the by-the-books tight-ass yet still remains a decent person. I'm sure whatever role(And I know I just won't say) he's in he'll cause some waves.

Well Chrisiall, don't forget that there's also Eureka, Warehouse 13 and reruns of NBC shows like Chuck and Heroes on Scifi as well. Usually the reruns are shown on the same week, though the times aren't always set and will change or just not be on at all. Not to mention all the great marathons. Quantum Leap, The Incredible Hulk, Firefly, X-files, The Original Battlestar Galactica and many others. I sometimes hate scifi, due to the annoyingly spoiler-prone promos and dorky monster movies. But honestly I watch it as much as the Travel Channel, Discovery, Animal Planet, History and such.

Also I'd like to mention I found a great Dr. Keller pic and posted it on my thread here...

http://www.fireflyfan.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=32780
Jewel is so pretty. I've caused countless Browncoats to go running off to their bunks.

One of the Stargate Fan News sites is using the first pic of her and cutting it right above her top, which makes her appear nekkid... which I find both exciting and hilarious.

Oh, just a side note but I was watching an episode of X-files today and you won't believe who I saw. Paul Mcgillion! Took a double take as he was quite a bit younger and was a bit lighter as well(meaning thinner). The episode was entitled "Small Potatoes"(not sure on the season) and he plays one of the disgruntled fathers. He gets a few lines so it's impossible to miss him. Just thought I'd mention it to all you Carson fans.
