I know there's lots of good stuff that doesn't fit into the 'movie' category- Justice League Unlimited, Ben 10, and such, but I just can't sit down to a 20 minute toon for fun, I gotta have a, well, MOVIE feel to it, or close to it, anyway.

Here's my picks:

Fire And Ice
Titan AE
Superman: Doomsday
The Batman/Superman Movie

...and I plan to get Dr. Strange asap.

Your turn

The first (well, second, since it's a remake) Appleseed is my absolute favourite action movie (and cemented Shinji Aramaki as my favourite action director). I haven't picked up the sequel yet just 'cause the past few weeks have had me running around like a headless creature.

Anything by Miyazaki also scores, though I have a particular fondness for Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away.

Titan A.E. is a Joss Whedon movie, so it should be a no-brainer to everyone here.

Until "Begins" came out, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker was my favourite Batman movie.

The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, and Cars also deserve mentions, though I'm getting more than a little tired of Pixar's CGI replacing "real" animation (doesn't mean I won't be seeing Wall*E on opening weekend, though).

It pales before the ensuing series, but Ghost in the Shell deserves props for basically introducing American audiences to anime movies.

At the other end of the scale, The Powerpuff Girls Movie is also a personal favourite.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shamballa is for FMA what Serenity is for Firefly, and may be the best and most definitive finale an anime series could hope for.

Never really got into the Anime/Manga scene although I appreciate the whole artistic side to it and some of the animation is just fantastic.
But I have seen a few so here's my list.

Akira
Spirited Away
Blood
Toy Story 1+2
The Incredibles
Cars
Wallace And Gromit In Curse Of The Were-rabbit.

What are Superman: Doomsday and the Bats/Supes movie really like? I've heard about them and have some interest in watching them. Are they aimed at kids or are they more adult themed?

Superman: Doomsday is a great one about the death of Superman, and it's definitely not for kids, Bat/Sup is a team-up (obviously), and it's 60 minutes- really 3 episodes from the animated series joined at the seams- and it's flawless IMO.

Superman: Doomsday is PG-13 (which, as the directors' commentary jokes, means he's got to drop trou').

It's half-decent, IMHO. I'm a huge fan of the Death of Superman arc of the comics, and the movie runs like a Pre-Crisis version (no Jonathan Kent, no Justice League or any other costumes at the funeral, the marginalization of Clark). It's basically Superman in isolation, whereas the main strength of the comics was the context of how everyone reacted to Doomsday. Take it as an "Elseworlds" story, though, and it's good.

Adam turns in a great performance as Superman (including the scenes where he's talking to himself), and Marsters' Luthor manages to be just as good as the JLU version.

Hear, hear!

Cisall, one anime movie that I'm almost positive you'll like is Jin Roh. It's extremely well researched, written, and animated. The story takes place in an alternate reality where the Axis powers won WWII (as I understand it), and overall the world is a little more brutal and fascist than what we're used to. Yep- beautiful, smart, and violent!

You should check out Blood+, I wouldn't really call it a sequel, but it's pretty good. And I totally agree about the FMA movie.

A few of mine.

Ghost in the Shell and Appleseed: Shirow Masamune is just brilliant.
End of Evangelion: It completes the mindfuck...
The Place Promised In Our Early Days: Makoto Shinkai's films are so very pretty...
Grave of the Fireflies: A great film, a little hard to get through at times... *Sniffle*
Afro samurai: Awesome, just awesome.
Death Note: Beautiful animation, great music, great story.

I have all those comics, and that's how I took the movie...it's actually more in line with the Donner films IMO, except that they got Luthor back to the evil-multi-national-corporate thing- which was good.

Ah Chrisisall! We share so very many obsessions! Practically every one of your favorites is on my shelf. They used to be shamefully hidden behind the 'adult' movies (no not that kind of adult! I meant things like Schindler's List and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest etc!) but then I grew up and proudly announced my love of cartoonishness to the world and have since managed to convince a few people of the true value of these films. I find Return of the Joker particularly useful in this regard. Brilliant film!

Of course since shows like Simpsons and South Park it is easier to get most people to accept animation as for adults. Even Disney movies are so much more sophisticated nowadays. My favorite Disney is Tarzan (what can I say, he's hot!). Try comparing that to, say, Snow White or The Fox and the Hound (I have a young niece. These films get repeated painfully often at my house) and you'll see how far mainstream animation has come. I'm not talking about anime. That's a whole other genre I've never really gotten into until recently.

I have 3 little kids, so I got about $12,000 worth of Disney and Dreamworks animation films. Where to start?

Almost everything PIXAR is outstanding. Toy Story 1 & 2, Finding Nemo, Cars, and Incredibles are my faves.

Disney faves are Beauty & the Beast, Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Outside of Disney, my faves:

Iron Giant
Titan A.E.
Spirit
Powerpuff Girls Movie

And surprisingly, Barbie movies are pretty good. Not earth shattering, mind you, but they are much better than expected.

Series-wise, Danny Phantom and Powerpuff Girls are noteworthy--got a lot of witty banter.

Can't believe I'm risking alienated you folks, I agree with most of the 'real' anime like Cowboy Bepop, FMA and Princess Mononoke, but...

Please don't overlook The Avatar, just because it's a Disney product and shares a network with... I'm gonna be sick... Spongebob-

The Avatar and his 'Scoobies' are fun, but Prince Zuko and his uncle steal the show. Especially good short called, 'Iroh's Tale', IIRC.

Did somebody mention Planetes? Also Flag. And Castle of Cagliostro, the best Lupin the III yarn, by Mizaki, of course. First and second seasons of Ghost in the Shell, especially the Tachikomas and a Major Mokoto-centric episode, 'Affection'.

Mokoto quoting philosopher Wilhelm Stekel "The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one."

Any shorts featuring Scrat from Ice age! Real knee slappers!

Ghost in the Shell, the two seasons of "Stand Alone Complex" and the movie "Solid State Society"
This will be considered sacrilege to some, but I prefer the SAC series over the original movie, and really don't like "GITS: Innocence" at all.

Cowboy Bebop, the short lived series and the movie. Spike and Wash :(

Akira

"Animatrix" Almost as good as the movie, and better than the sequels!

Just about anything from PIXAR. Joss did write "Toy Story", and I also like "Cars", "The Incredibles", and "Monsters, Inc."

How was Ark of Truth(I did the same thing, only different 8-)? I didn't follow the last season very closely, and I heard that there's some optional recap on the disc.

I picked up Appleseed, instead of AoT, and two-for-one copies of Black Lagoon (Why, Geneon, why? I'll never be able to get a legal complete set of Samurai Champloo, now...) to make up a third complete set, compares well with the BDS, it does.

Glad to hear that Avatar, and Deathnote, are both going to be live-action. Deathnote, not as much.

"Ark of Truth" was awesome (though I'm a hardcore SG-1 fanboy, so I'm a guaranteed thumbs-up). There are a few eye-rolling moments, but considering how much fun it was, I'm willing to overlook/fanwank them away.

There is a recap on the disk, though I'd still recommend watching the last couple of seasons (the recap starts with Cam joining the team).
