I liked it. Could have been a little more fleshed out, but I greatly enjoyed it. I will admit to NOT being a fan of the original.

Please I will pretty much watch anything Mr. Reeves is in.

Anyone else see it?

REGINAROADIE

I knew it was a bad idea from the start, and having seen it, I can now confirm that this remake was AWFUL. Having recently seen the original recently, the comparisons are night and day. The original was stripped down, subtle and masterfully made. The remake was overblown, ham fisted and poorly cobbled together. Replacing nuclear war with environmentalism and turning Gort into a swarm of nanites does not make you relevant in today's culture.

Complete waste of time and resources. And on my worst of list alongside 10,000 B.C., THE LOVE GURU and THE HAPPENING.

Reginaroadie! You did not like 10,000 BC. Sarcasm.

I suspected what you wrote about this film.

I have the original "3:10 to Yuma" and then wasted my money seeing the remake. They had an armour plated stage coach. Did anybody think all you had to do was shoot the horses. No. They blow it up. Why? Because you need explosions. What's a film without explosions? If they remade "King of Kings" they would find a way to blow something up.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I can accept the fact that there are some films that are in dire need of a remake, but this ain't one of 'em. Regina is right, the original had everything you needed to tell the story, it did not need a fancy CGI makeover. I won't be going to see it and won't be looking forward to the dvd.

Same here. I'm planning on re-viewing the original again soon.

What we need is ORIGINAL scifi.....big hint for Serenity 2.

SINGATE

Kind of weak how Klaatu suddenly changes his mind after seeing the kid crying at his father's grave. It's bad enough they wimped out on the ending but at the very least all of mankind's creations should have been removed. Not just the technology, everything.

Did anyone else find it humorous that Keanu gave a speech about humanity ruining the planet? I remember another movie he was in where a certain agent wearing a similar suit spouted off about humans as a virus. Kinda ironic.

It really isnt bad, although SNGATE is right that the wussed on the ending. It does end too abruptly, but I liked it. There are a lot worse movies that I have liked so whatever. As I said before I hated the original. thought it was seriously boring so I am not invested in it.

From the looks of it, seems like its based on the concept that mankind is destroying the planet, and is somehow separate, or not of the Earth. The line where Neo, i mean Klaatu, says " YOUR world ? ", all indignant like, as if humanity didn't evolve here, just like every other life form.

Spare me the attitude.

No, actually, their point is that humans are a destructive force and that they can not risk the entire planet for one species. Remove the species and the planet survives.

The earth belongs to all the species on it, not just humans.

Right, pretty much the garbage I was talking about. Take this Global Warming crap. It's pure b.s., but plays right in to the nonsensical thinking that we're "destroying " the planet. That fact that we're even here is because plants used the CO2 in the air , and then poisoned the atmosphere with O2 , as their waste product. Had Klaatu et al arrived then, they could just as well say plants were destroying the planet, wiped them out, and no animals which breathed oxygen would have evolved.

Idiotic subplot to the movie. Good reason to skip it, imo.

I'm sorry if I've studied Earth's history. Guess that makes me some sort of a freak.

I just hate overly preachy films that talk down to the audience and pitch political agendas in the guise of 'science' or sci-fi at me.

THESOMNAMBULIST

I really wanted to like this remake. However personally I didn't feel it delivered quite the impact that it was implying or believed it could imply. It began with promise but really the severity of Klattu's visit and subsequent warnings were so easily overcome that it felt like a wasted venture.

And I don't know if was just me but the minute I saw John Cleese all I could think of was:

" He's not the Messiah he's a very naughty boy"

Try and catch the original - the message is still far more relevant and a good deal less preachy.

Looking at the pic are you saying that the USAF in the movie could not pick up the spaceship till it landed on the white house lawn(stealth tech). And that the robot had AI. Well then Tesla had free energy for the masses figured out in the 1890s and we don't need oil, coal, solar, or nuclear power. OK it's just hollyweird.

MRSUNIVERSE832

I just saw the movie this weekend, and I personally must say that I like both the old and new. Yeah, the environmental message slightly annoyed me, but I felt like both the humans and Klaatu came away with a lesson at the end: Humans, be good stewards of the earth; be more mindful of your surroundings and your fellow man, and Klaatu, don't be so judgemental. Humans are far from perfect, and cannot attain perfection, but they are not through and through heartless/evil.

Mind you, I *did* sit up in the front row at the IMAX version, and got so dizzy that I felt like I was going to pass out of puke, so if I see it again with a clearer head, I may change my mind.

Or I may not.

Nevertheless, I loved the classic version, and thought the new one was pretty interesting. I did think that some of the CGI was overdone, but I actually thought the new concept for Gort was interesting. It wasn't better than the old Gort, but it wasn't worse. And it was an interesting concept.

But that's just my 0.02.

Yeah, this was one of the biggest disappointments that have come out of sci-fi in a long time. Its message is confusing. Its plot is thin, and the narrative is almost nonexistent. The only thing that can be said of it is that has some pretty good special effects, which might bring in the videogame camp, but it won’t inspire many real sci-fi fans. Anyone who ever appreciated the original for the masterpiece that it is will be unbearably disappointed.

I don't know Z. I remember seeing the original on TV back in the day and it was just boring. I really hated it and have never understood why people are so enamored of it. The movie that scared the bejeesus out of me back then was The Abominable Dr. Phibes, Vincent Price was one weird dude! oh and the flying monkeys from Wizard of Oz.

Hello FMF

Went with Mrs. Z last weekend and caught two movies, the new “ The Day the Earth Stood Still” and “Twilight”. We both will say that the later was the better movie.

As far as the old back and white “The Day the Earth Stood Still”, I have to say that the Terminator robot machine is scary, but to a kid of around 7 or 8, a robot that can shoot a laser beam from it’s eye and dissolve someone into nothingness was quite frightening.
