The Beverly Hills Cop star, 47, has been signed up by British director Christopher Nolan to reprise the role played by Jim Carrey in 1995's Batman Forever.

The surprise move follows speculation linking Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp to the part.

The film, set for a 2010 release, is being developed under the working title Gotham.

Execs have also signed up rising Transformers star Shia LaBeouf, 22, to play Robin.

Eddie Murphy? Shia LaBeouf?

OMFG

Please God, don't let this be true! Please God!

I really, really hope that this isn't. Whilst the Riddler would be my first choice as the next batman villain i honestly can't see Eddie Murphy in the role, i mean its EDDIE MURPHY for God's sake!!!!

Luckily the Sun (the newspaper this is taken from) isn't exactly known for its reliability so theres a good chance this is either a mistake or a fabrication *phew*

I pretty much guarantee that this is false. If not for Murphy (I don't think Nolan would choose anyone over Depp for that role, and if Depp wasn't available I know there are many talented actors that are far more suited for the role than Murphy). Than definitely for Shia. Christian Bale has expressed numerous times that he absolutely HATES the Robin sidekick. He's said he'd walk out and break his contract if the film so much as hinted at Robin. So I call bullshit.

Would be pretty f****** awesome is Depp played the Riddler though.....

Any casting rumors about the next Batman are going to be utter Bullshit for at least the next year. Nolan hasn't even signed on for another, and is saying he will make something else (at this stage, likely a film version of The prisoner TV show) before going back to Bats.

So basically, ignore anything for a while.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I was hearing like a week ago that he was hesitant and would only make a third Batman movie if he really thought the story needed to be told. Of course, I think that's half truthful and half bargaining tactic, but that's me being cynical.
If Nolan isn't directing it, and Eddie Murphy is the Riddler and Cher is Catwoman (yeah, that rumor's been out there, too) then I definitely don't want to see it, or even hear about it. And I doubt I'm the only one.
They pissed off the fans once and it took years to get the franchise in the air again, they wouldn't make a horrifying movie now, after the success the last two have seen because they were quality.

But, hey - ya know who would make a really peerless Catwoman? C'mon - sure ya do! Hint: Her name rhymes incongruously with "Bummer".

Yes, I have. And that has nothing to do with it. I just don't see her in the role. There is far more to casting than just how one moves. Presense and personality wise, I just don't see it - the end. Sorry, but just because I like her on Firefly (and to a lesser extent, TSCC) doesn't mean I think she's good for every role.

And yeah, I know they're only 7 years apart. Didn't say it was a vast difference. But I do think they'll cast around his age, if they even use the character, which is far from a forgone conclusion.

Well, we're in disagreement. I think much of a character is how they move, especially a woman who's partly defined by her identification with a feline. Also, she's a little touched in the head, something Summer, as we know, can portray quite well, along with having strength and generally being a badass. She can play innocent or be sexy and enticing. I think she has the look, moves, and acting skill to be Selina Kyle. I'm not saying Catwoman will feature in the next film (if and when there is one) or that they will cast Summer, just saying that's what should happen.

Huh, see now i was just thinking the same thing about Morena. Granted she may not be as *ahem* limber as summer but i reckon she could really do a great job and work as a convincing foil/romantic interest for Bale.

Besides she'd certainly do better than the last Catwoman. Halle Berry anyone? :dissapointed:

HALLE BARRY NEVER PLAYED SELINA KYLE!
It was a TOTALLY different character. I understand the confusion, kind of, due to the similar identity names. But that movie? Nothing to do with Batman or Selina Kyle's Catwoman. NOTHING! Selina Kyle is a woman in a cat suit, like Batman is a man in a batsuit. She doesn't get transformed into half cat through some ridiculous resurrection spell. That woman in the movie was called Patience, it wasn't Selina!
I don't know why they chose to have a totally different and crappy character called Catwoman, but please, please stop relating her to Selina Kyle, or Batman.

In that case i politely apologise and withdraw my previous statement.

Although i still hold that Morena would be awesome as Selina Kyle/Catwoman.

On a side note: why on earth did they bother making a film called Catwoman if it had nothing to do with Batman, or indeed, with the actual Catwoman?

I agree that movement is a big part of it, but not all. And more than anything else, the movement can be taught.

I don't really want to see Summer play "touched in the head" yet again. The same act over and over gets old.

And she's certainly good at playing innocent, but as for sexy... well, she's cute, but she just doesn't come anywhere close to the dangerous sensuality that I think Catwoman should posses.

The Batman is somewhat special to me; he was the first comic book hero I ever read (even before Superman) so I have to say it - Eddie Murphy as the Riddler, I don't see it.

The rumor could be just that, a rumor (thank Hollywood gods). Now having said that, it doesn't mean that he couldn't pull it off in his own way. Yes I said it; for the following reasons:

EM did a solid job in Dreamgirls, so much so that he was nominated for his portrayal. Seriously, I did not think he could do it and he showed that he has acting chops. I think back a few years when Burton was about to do the first Batman they picked Michael Keaton (of all people). The fanboys and others went ballistic. Turns out he did a solid job (see Joel Schumacher, Clooney and Kilmer). In Schumacher's defense he was told to make it more colorful, and boy did he.

Keaton and Burton worked well together in keeping my hero dark and brooding. But I like Nolan's take on the Dark Knight even more. I also think back to an actor, who made Look Who's Talking Too and who's career had all but disappeared, got a repreive after the role of a lifetime alongside the performance of a lifetime, in a little film called Pulp Fiction. Now the guy owns a frickin' 747 Jet.

He lucked out that he got a great script, director and Samuel L., to play off of. So don't count EM out. But I'm in the 'please don't let it be Eddie' camp. Why? Because I just don't see it. The Riddler must be someone like Dennis Hopper, a seriously demented sick dude. But he's too old. It'll come to me, a need a minute alone boys.

Catwoman = Angelina Jolie, period. I love Summer and I think she would be a great Catwoman, but Jolie is PERFECT. Summer could do smoldering sex appeal, I have no doubts about that. Jolie IS smoldering sex appeal. OK, enough of that.

James Franco as the Riddler. I had him in mind, but couldn't remember his name. For that role you need someone with a screw loose, Depp is just too cool for words. You need someone who will become unhinged at any moment. Gary Oldman would have been a great Riddler in his younger days. And please, NO ROBIN.

Tawabawho?

Angelina Jolie would be very good as Catwoman, I have no doubts about that. She has the feline look and she definitely sizzles. I would be happy to see her in the role, I think. Just have a feeling she wouldn't get it, maybe because she's just so high profile, not to mention distinctive. But maybe they'd want that.

Been watching Dexter lately, and I have to say I'm a big fan of Jaime Murray. She's lithe and gorgeous and sexy, and man can she be creepy. Only thing would be her accent. I love it, but of course she'd have to lose it to play an American. I wouldn't mind seeing her in the role, either.

Although it may be bullshit, I think Eddie Murphey would make an excellent if not different Riddler. I remember back in the day when Michael Keaton played the role of Batman and all I could here from friends were dread at how he was going to destroy the movie. I too began fearing for the role, but then saw the movie "Clean and Sober," and knew that Michael would do well by the movie. I understand how many people might have feared how Eddie Murphey would have tackled the role of the Riddler in a Batman movie, because it would have to be different from the traditional Riddler role, but I do think Eddie is talented enough to make a different and entertaining Riddler. With that said the rumor probably is bullshit, but I wouldn't go fretting over what cannot be controlled.

I am one of those strange people who don't think Angie is amazing (I like her, I just don't love her. I also hate Julia Roberts and George Clooney AKA the worst BATMAN EVER). My brother and I agree (and he doesn't even like Firefly) that Summer has the moves and the chops to take on Catwoman. Age is the kicker though, it's not a big difference between her and Bale (really isn't) but she may scream a little too young for Bats. Now Morena, I had never thought of that, but I love it. I'm more or less on the line with Nolan casting someone generally unheard of in big time Hollywood or unexpected for the role. I think Angie is what everyone expects, and I think the genius of the new franchise is that they don't choose who everyone expects but they still have someone who embodies the character near perfectly.

And even though I posted previous that Depp would make a killer Riddler, that is what everyone would want so that's too predictable. Franco sounds like a good choice, he's got the range. I don't know if he'd do any more comic book based movies though post-Spiderman (though they're talking about a fourth one, which scares me since 3 ruined the franchise for me). Paul Bettany though I think would be a better choice. The more I actually think about it Bettany would make a superior Riddler.

I really, really want to see Miss Harley Quinn. Harley is camp, but I think she would give the next film some element of the Joker and she could be executed in a similar style as the Joker really well. I keep on seeing Keira Knightly play her for some reason.... I think it was her in Domino...

If they ever wanted to, Christina Hendericks for Ivy To see her as Ivy trying to seduce Bats... yowzah.

And no Robin! Or nipples on the batsuit!
