RIPWASH

This may have been addressed before, but hey . . . I'm new

I know the intelligence of the Reavers must have been discussed because, ya know, somehow they organize raiding parties, maneuver spacecraft, set booby traps, etc. But I'm thinking that they MUST speak when they not full of bloodlust. I say this because of the episode "Bushwacked". The poor guy who was forced to witness the Reaver atrocities keeps mumbling "No mercy" and other things, but what stuck out to me was when he said something to the effect of "Open them up and see what's inside". My thinking is that the Reavers MUST have been saying these things in some form or another and he's just repeating them in his addled mind.

Your thoughts?

Zoe: "Get it running again."
Mal: "Yeah"
Zoe: "So not running now"
Mal: "Not so much"
- Out of Gas

You're new? As in NEW new? Well, WELCOME! Someone will be along eventually to pelt you with planets and berries (which is how the language of love is spoken around here) if they haven't already.

As to your question, I hadn't really given it much thought. I guess my unexamined assumption has always been that they likely do speak when not "excited"; whether or not one would want to hear what they have to say is another story. I'm assuming a level of eloquence a few notches below your average English major.

It was like that when we got here!

Isn't that just what's left of his partial sanity, there to show us just how far he's gone?

Welcome to the party!

CYBERSNARK

An added factor; looking at how cut up they are (split tongues, peeled-back lips, etc), any words they try to say wouldn't come out sounding like anything we recognize.

But I don't think each of them would mutilate themselves the same way. Some mouths would still be in tact, I think :o)

It also struck me that during this episode (re-watching it now), that the Reavers are intelligent/coherent enough to clean up the gore and mess they leave behind on the booby-trapped ship.

JONGSSTRAW

I think they are like cavemen. They grunt and communicate non-verbally. I'm an expert on this, because most of my relatives are Reavers.

I've often thought of making a fan fic movie regarding the Reavers on the ship Serenity faced in the pilot Serenity.

TRAVELER

There must be some verbal language. They are not ignorant or they could not have set the trap Kaylee had to remove. They just seem ultra violent. From the movie they appear to stay close to Miranda. They may have a sense of it being a holy place. They never go back, but they never stay to far from it.

Zoe mentions rape. So they maintained their basic instinct to reproduce. Are they raising a new generation of Reavers?

I don't think the rape is intended as a means of reproduction and just a form of maliciousness against everybody. She was telling this to Simon who couldn’t reproduce even if he wanted to, and I think the Reaver Wannabe in Bushwhacked was a clue as to how the Reavers refill their numbers. I think they choose one person to witness the rapes and torture forcing them down a narrow path to becoming a Reaver and then leave that victim alone and come back only after he or she has become a Reaver or expired.

SCHISM

I've pondered this, and just assumed that they have their own classes.

Warrior class - the guys who cut their tongues and stuff.

Engineering class - pilots, weapons makers, technological stuff.

I just assumed they all spoke in grunts and a vague semblance of english.

I also assumed that they are led by an alpha-male who is strong AND somewhat intelligent - enough to decide who to delegate functions to. Which fellow reavers are smart enough to be put in charge of repairs, which ones get the women, etc.

I also assumed that, being that they were all once citizens of Miranda, they had some fore-knowledge of mechanics and creating weapons and things before they went mental that they could draw off of.

Just my assumptions.

It would be interesting to see the investigation of a caught Reaver, like the one 'mutant' in I Am Legend.

It makes sense what you said about their classes, and that may be why the Reavers which attacked the converted scout ship in "Bushwhacked," selected the scrawny guy to be their initiate, so they could get a new mechanic. I often wonder if the Reavers who take care of their ships really muck up their own engines to contaminate their vessels with radiation, or if they do the same thing Kaylee did in BDM by making it look like their engines are mucked up. I could see how making their engines look mucked up could have a psychological effect on ships they raid, and I cannot think of any advantages of actually mucking up the engines core contamination. Serenity didn’t fly faster in BDM did it?

I think it's been discussed that letting the core containment leak does allow for the Reaver ships to go faster and thus capture their prey easier. In BDM, Mal told Zoe to make it LOOK like they were running without core containment without actually doing it.

Zoe: "Get it running again."
Mal: "Yeah"
Zoe: "So not running now"
Mal: "Not so much"
