THESOMNAMBULIST

Hey 'Gleaming Great Chum' :D

Nice post. It's interesting to read how very similarly we're thinking about The Dollhouse.

One thing has struck me from the onset as regards Dollhouse and the termination of Firefly.
That is...
Do you suppose Joss is telling River's story all over again. Only this time from within the lab?

In terms of the acting for Dollhouse - I'm less inclined to think it's poor acting so much as it is us having to see Echo&co as another person every week. It's a tough sell. I think in 45 minutes there's not much an actor can do to have us sympathise with his/her plight. That's why I think Boyd and Topher, aswell as the FBI agent are working well. But it's early days - we'll see.

Must admit I can't wait for Joss' commentary when the DVD is released.

ZEEK

So, are we all just assuming Victor has been a Doll the whole time? He even said if there was a dollhouse that he's sign up. Maybe he really did find it and decide to join during Episode 3. That or maybe the dollhouse got tired of his snooping and captured him. Seems to plain and simple that he's just been an active the whole time.

Hey S,

Do you suppose Joss is telling River's story all over again. Only this time from within the lab?

One of the first things that crossed my mind when I heard about Dollhouse was just that. This is River's story as told from inside the Academy. Perhaps it's Joss' way of completing her story using a more contemporary setting. It is the Captain and River embarking on a journey together.

I immediately thought of Summer for this role (I hate to beat a dead horse but she would totally nail this). For it to be believable and successful, you need someone that could flawlessly portray child-like qualities, and quickly change, at the snap of a finger, into killer-mode: Summer. Eliza has good qualities, but her transitions are not memorable. Perhaps with time she'll grow into the character.

I'm less inclined to think it's poor acting so much as it is us having to see Echo&co as another person every week. It's a tough sell.

I'm inclined to think that the writing, as well as the acting, has something to do with the weak showing so far. That's why I believe Fox has done
more meddling than first reported; it is well known that Fox prefers their shows to be "24" in nature with the action driving the story. Whereas Joss prefers that the story dictate the action.
My suggestion to Joss would be to have more interaction between Boyd and Echo, both on assignment and in the DH. They are really good together.

'GGC' (Oh no, they've discovered my secret identity)

Z,

Based on what we know so far about the DH set-up, I don't think Victor was forced or kidnapped into active servitude here.

When I saw him rise up out of that chair last week I said Joss caught me off-guard. He really pulled the rug out from under us with that one. He did give us clues - besides Joss loves to leave breadcrumbs along the way.
------------------------------------------

Maybe he really did find it and decide to join during Episode 3. That or maybe the dollhouse got tired of his snooping and captured him.

That is a possibility. But remember when Mr. Dominic was getting antsy about Ballard snooping, DeWitt seemed quite calm and collected when she spoke about having everything under control. Besides, I believe that the actives are there voluntarily to make money or repay debts. Besides it makes it more interesting, anyone could be an active now, even Boyd or Dominic. To me it just makes sense that DeWitt would assign a doll to keep Ballard chasing his tail.

Well, tonight we'll know more.
