KIRKULES

I was never really a fan of any of the Enterprise designs, but if I had to choose I'd probably go with the prototype.

SINGATE

Based just on looks I'd go for the original 1701. Based how functional it appears to be I'd pick the 1701A.

RIPWASH

I'm torn.

I like the new one and the 1701-A about equally as well. But . . . if I was pressed to choose just one? The new one.

No . . . 1701-A

No . . .

New one.

Final answer.

Mal: You think she'll hold together?
Zoë: She's torn up plenty, but she'll fly true.
Mal: Could be bumpy.
Zoë: Always is

None of 'em.

Sorry, I'm in love with the 1701-E.

Yeah I've always liked the E best, as well. Seriously though, I've never liked the basic design of the ships so much.

America loves a winner!

Hate to dis the old school, but the middle ship simply looks too much like a stick drawing when compared to the other two versions.

There's something attractive about the bottom ship, but the top one looks more structurally sound, imo. And when traveling past warp speed, I'll take safety over style, any day.

I think what it shows is that modern CGI is much better at giving the illusion of size: alongside the new one, its rather obvious that the other two are miniatures*.

I think its partly texture, lighting, reflections and simple tricks like having things in the foreground to add depth, but the real problem with miniatures must be that however carefully you build your 1:500 scale model the perspective effect is going to be wrong unless you can also film it through a 1:500 scale camera. Trivial with CGI - rather tricky in meatspace.

(* er, unless picture #2 is CGI from the re-mastered DVDs - but if so, they've faithfully mimicked the style of the original model).
