So, now that it's been around for long enough for most of y'all to've seen it, what is your final assessment?
Is it okay? Great? Do you mind the nacelles being closer together?
Can you deal?

I can.

I'm fine with it as long as it stays in its own little universe.

What surprised me is how huge it is compared to the "Prime" timeline version. She's got more mass in a single nacelle than an entire Constitution-class.

I just did a little visual research, and based on the size of the shuttlecrafts, the ship can't possibly be that huge. They can give us a big #, but it just dosen't jibe with what I see.

Ain't seen it yet (in space no one can hear you gasp in faux-indignation), but still plan to...planned to, that is, until these nacelles of closer mutual proximity were brought to my attention. No sir - I don't like it! If Mr. Roddenberry had intended for the Constitution class to have its nacelles that close together, he'd-a jolly well done it that way to begin with! There are some things in this galaxy with which I simply cannot be havin',and 2 of those things would be starship nacelles that look like they're this close to going and getting a room!

And what's next? I'll tell you: Klingons and tribbles living together...MASS hysteria!

The redesign is crap. There's plenty of redesigns out on the net that improve on the original, and some that look worse. But none of the worst amateur efforts are quite as bad as that.

Yeah, I've seen some GREAT ones, some thanks to you, Cit, and this one they picked for the new movie ain't one of 'em. I wouldn't call it "crap" though... it's better than the Galaxy class in the NG!
Is it not?

It is indeed better than the Galaxy Class and it is also better IMO than the B and C versions.
A will always remain my fave though.

Back to the diagrams and it seems like the figure of 725 meters has been taken from somewhere (maybe an official figure, I don't know) and then the drawing scaled to that. The windows on the new version are way too large. I would estimate they should be around the same size of those on the original timeline A version.
Which brings me to another point - surely the new version shouldn't have the A attached to the end?
It's only the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 at the moment.

I wasn't impressed by TNG. I really don't like this though, so I'd say this is worse.

725.35 meters is straight from Bad Robot Productions.

I think it's decent... I'm not happy that there are rumors that khan will be in the center in the next movie...That ships sailed I hope they don't do that...however, I like the actor choices and the ship design...especially chekov, anton yelchin is a great actor...

I liked it. Now I won't say it was great, but very well done. I liked the casting of the actors - I don't know the actor's name who played Scotty but he was great. And Zoe Saldana as Uhura, perfect.

I was not thrilled with the story, but that's a minor quibble. I was also disappointed with the treatment of Kirk's mother - once he was born she was discarded without a logical exit. Again minor quibble. They wasted Eric Bana, IMHO. But they made perfect use of Leonard Nimoy. Man did he look old.

The new Enterprise was somewhat hyper-extended. It seemed forced and artificial. It doesn't hold a candle to Serenity. It was all sleek and phony-looking, but of course we're talking about the Federation. I much prefer the "old" Enterprise.
Now that ship had character. NCC-1701.

Yeah, this one's a bit bigger, but the explanation is that wartime causes ships to be designed differently. This timeline is a markedly rougher place...

I've seen the movie twice, and I will definitely buy the DVD when it's available. I'm not a "techie", so I don't focus so much on the ship. To me it sorta looks like the Enterprise I knew, sorta in the same way that other Enterprises have looked like more modernized versions of the original.

It's the timeline-shift element that is both fascinating and frustrating for me. I watched Original Episode "Obsession" the other night. Kirk's career is explained somewhat in this episode.

His first space assignment was as an Ensign aboard the starship Farragut, under the command of Captain Garrovick. This was the ship & crew that encountered the gaseous dichromium creature that killed half the crew of the Farragut, over 200 people. Kirk received a commodation, but he blamed himself for not destroying the creature when he had the chance. This was 11 years before Captain Kirk ran into the same creature in a different part of the galaxy. One can postulate that Kirk served in Star Fleet for at least 5-8 years before becoming a Captain. Those years of experience and command situations prepared him for the big chair. By contrast, Chris Pine's Kirk earned the seat right out of the Academy by luck and timing and moxy. Two different Kirks in two different quantum realities. And no mention of his brother Sam either.

Sam could have been his younger brother, in which case, Sam doesn't exist in the new timeline.

Sweet!

The remastered version does look mighty fine and runs a very close second to the A version.

I really should look at getting more Star Trek props for my collection.
I have a TOS era phaser and that's it.

There was a time when I'd have agreed, but the new details visible on 1701 without the messy 60's opticals obscuring them make me love it just a bit more.

And, if you are as big a Trek fan as I, you MUST check site this out:

I have no problem with the new Enterprise. The Next Generation was about the worst. I still prefer the Enterprise of the early movies. Not only a nice design, but a great paint job.

Not a fan of the new design--seems kind of klunky: the nacelles seem too big for the frame. Give me the Matt Jeffries original and movie versions anyday. That being said, I may get used to it after time--it took nearly 3 seasons before I could stand looking at the Enterprise-D

I still can't.
TNG was the only Trek series I could never get in to. Although that may have had far more to do with Riker's and Troi's bad acting than the ship design.

Thanks for the links Chris.
Prop auctions are great even though I can rarely afford to buy anything.
Yes I am a big Trek fan but it's pretty much TOS/original crew movies only with some DS9 thrown in. Plus the new movie.

My Son is even more hardcore, for him it's only TOS, and ST1, 4 & 6. The new movie is on his s**tlist because they destroyed Vulcan, killed Spock's Mom & had yucky kissing on the transporter pad.
He dabbles in NG because of Data, and Voyager because of the EMP, but has no solid love of either.

The EMH was easily the best thing about Voyager. Tell him I agree with him there.
Although the fact that he likes Data as well might mean a future career in artificial human development and research.

Picky?
