I'll go first: sure, I have an emotional connection to TMP refit, but really, both have things I like & dislike, so to me, they are equal- I like 'em both.

Next?

Pros: Rounded nacelles, nice sideview nacelle strut design, good overall look.
Cons: Nacelle strut curve in forward or rear view; nacelles somewhat close together.

Pros: Stately appearance, good main hull to secondary hull connection, nice general look.
Cons: Flattened nacelles with no leading edge glow, diminutive connection between secondary hull & nacelle struts, recessed deflector dish.

Oh, I'm just trying to be difficult.

To be honest, I think a side by side comparison of ships can only be made when they're in the same lighting, the same setting, that sort of thing.

Only then can a true judgement be rendered.

I'll also say that I like the scale of the new Enterprise- at first I thought it too big, but now it seems much more appropriate for such long missions, especially where manpower is necessary.

I like the top one. Dunno if it's the color, but between the two, the bottom one looks more cartoonish. Might be the big blue lights ? Speaking of which....is that a pale turquoise color on the top ship?

I'll take Serenity, thank you very much.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

My biggest, and really only, problem with the new design is the nacelles. They just seem huge and completely out of proportion to the ship. I'd like to see some other ship designs to see if this is an issue with the nacelle designs or just something particular to Enterprise.

Browncoat, I think the ship in the new movie is the original style of the first in that line of ships. It is not even a class A. I felt they captured the fifties retro look to scifi movies or at least the essence of that feel. The Enterprise of the sixties tv show is my favorite. I never liked the overhauled Enterprise in the early 80 movies. They did a good job on the shuttles too.

Meh. I'll leave the retro to the past. I'm currently in love with the Titan (Capt. Riker's ship).

Though the Aventine is certainly turning heads.

FLATTOP

Of those shown, I prefer the newest (movie) enterprise.

The oversized front end of the nacelles, tapering to the rear gives it the feel of funneling free hydrogen to the matter/anti-matter injectors/reaction containment area; a 50's concept hydrogen ram-jet.
My Trek-gineering is a bit rusty though: Do the engines utilize collected free hydrogen? Do the nacelles produce thrust from the rear? Or is it strictly an internally generated field effect that is powered by the matter/anti-matter reaction? Or something more like current nuclear powered warships (reactor creates steam, steam drives a turbine, turbine spins the propellers & electrical generators)?

Interesting that the "old" Constitution class (the newest Enterprise) nacelles most closely resemble those of the "newest" Sovereign class from the poster scan. Also interesting that at 686m the Sovereign class is 'only' about double the length of a Reagan class aircraft carrier.

The original TV Enterprise (NCC-1701, no bloody A, B, C or D) nacelles are still the best in my book. 1960's and they already had the coolest effect on the front of 'em.

CYBERSNARK

That, Chrisisall, is the USS Aventine. Vesta-class, the most advanced ship in the fleet, equipped for quantum slipstream travel and captained by Ezri Dax. It played a pivotal role in David Mack's Destiny trilogy, and is due to reappear in next year's Typhon Pact miniseries.

The matter/antimatter reactor core is in the engineering hull; the only things in the (mostly hollow) nacelles are the warp field coils that generate the warp bubble. There's no actual forward thrust --the field distorts spacetime in a linnear fashion, therefore the most sensible configuration is to have the warp coils arranged in a line from "front" to "back." The field also disrupts sensors, so it makes sense to put the nacelles toward the back of a ship (where the blind spots will be less of a problem). They have to be set far from the hull because the field generates a variety of radiation.

The nacelle tips are ramscoops, but free hydrogen is rare enough that it can usually only be used to supplement the M/ARC, or in case of an emergency (or when used creatively, as in the Riker Manoeuvre).

While modern (24th Century) ships have minimized these problems, they haven't been completely overcome (the radiation and sensor-jamming is lessened, but still present). The Defiant-class' tucked-in nacelles are no end of engineering problems --the ship is so packed with armour and shielding to contain the radiation that it needs to produce about twice as much energy just to account for all that mass.

(Y'know how some guys get about hot cars? I'm that way about starships. )

Great pics Cybersnark!

So that is Capt Will Riker's ship? Cool looking! Is the Titan in a novel?

The Aventine is pretty cool looking too. Very cutting edge.

Several, actually:

http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Trek:_Titan

The Titan series thus far includes:
Taking Wing
The Red King
Orion's Hounds
Sword of Damocles
Destiny I: Gods of Night
Destiny II: Mere Mortals
Destiny III: Lost Souls
Over a Torrent Sea
and
Synthesis (out this November)

It's a really interesting ship --it became a political hotbutton issue; several nonhumanoid species were complaining that they were under-represented in Starfleet, so Titan ended up getting a mostly-alien crew (humans are a minority, and humanoids are only about 50%).

Our Doctor looks like a velociraptor, our Assistant Counsellor looks like Stitch (from "Lilo & __"), our helmswoman has to wear an enviroment suit, our crew includes Starfleet's first Cardassian, Starfleet's second Ferengi, a Horta, and these folks:

As I understand it, the Bussard Ramscoop generates a funnel-shaped EM field that gathers up interstellar Hydrogen.

Absolutely! People make fun of TOS these days for the "plywood sets" (Ummm, ALL sets are made of plywood!) and the "cheesy" effects, but I wonder what they're comparing it to. Star Wars? Firefly? nuGalactica?
I always compared Star Trek to Lost in Space & Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and it was so much better in all departments!

Will traveling at warp speed cause cancer ? Or sterilization ?

No way will we ever achieve light speed travel. The EPA and OSHA will never allow it.
