Most older movies(Ghostbusters, Princess Bride) are marginal upgrades. There are exceptions though. St. Elmos Fire looks frikkin amazing on Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray movies also contain True high def sound(5.1 uncompressed signal). My surround unit is connected through an optical cable. Sounds better than real theater sound, and world's better than standard compressed dvd sound crap!

I've seen a couple of films on friends Blu Ray systems with the 'Ducks Nuts' sized flat Screen TV's with 5.1 surroundy sound and to me it all looks and feels a little too 'gamey' and weird. But a great flick nonetheless - I'll just get it on the next format to dormat system...

Blu-Ray doesn't eliminate any of the shakiness or grit (unless they go overboard on the noise reduction), nor the jump-cuts or intentional (in-camera) blurriness. These are all stylistic choices in the shooting and editing, that aren't really effected at all by higher resolution. The film grain may be reduced - but it can also be brought out a lot in the conversion process, depending on how they choose to go about it. "I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him."

Just thought I'd say that a lot of the shops that play BluRays leave the 'MotionPlus' option on. MotionPlus is GREAT for sport, but if you leave it on during films, it looks awful. It basically smooths everything out and makes it look fake (I think it's supposed to make it more 'real' interestingly enough....) I'm not sure if this is what you saw, but just be aware that this happens often (at least here in Australia).
