As another hi-tech sell out (and proud of it) I'll be getting the Blu-ray as well. Just don't know whether to get it on release day or leave it for Sanity Clause.

And I don't know what Kwicko's Blu-ray player cost but mine is a £450 multi-region Panasonic DMP-BD55.
Add to that the cost of a Sony Bravia 40" FullHD TV and an Onkyo TX-SR606 sound system and speakers and I spent a whole lot of money within a two week period at the end of last year. And you know what...
...it was worth every penny.

Probably the only film from this past summer I'll buy.

I do find it odd that my favorite movie of the summer, and my most despised movie of the summer, were written by the same guys.

Oh, trust me - it can look better!

I didn't think it could look better than my 42" 1080i LCD - until I got a 1080i upconverting DVD player. It really DOES look better. And so does every episode of Firefly.

Part of me really, really wants to get Serenity on BluRay just because it's the first thing I watched on the big TV when I got it, AND it was the first thing I watched on the upconvert DVD player when I got THAT (and I only bought it because it was $25 on Woot.com).

I am a whore for my TV and entertainment, though. I'm running out of inputs on the damn TV at this point. I've currently got hooked up to it:

TimeWarner HD DVR w/160GB hard drive.
Philips DVD Recorder w/160GB hard drive.
RCA Home Theater system with DVD player.
Philips 1080i Upconverting DVD Player.
Sony PlayStation 2.
Sony PlayStation 3.
Nintendo Wii.

I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to talk the wife into letting me have an Xbox 360 now that they've dropped the price to match the PS3's new lower prices.

I *am* contributing to the economy - I'm just afraid I'm contributing to Japan's and China's economies more!

Wall sockets are the biggest problem. I have so many plugs for things that when I buy something new I have to figure out which item I use the least so that I can unplug it and plug the new item in.

At least you are picking the best one now. The PS3 is great but IMO the Xbox360 has the edge because it's online side is better. Xbox Live is fantastic and I've heard that the PS3 equivalent isn't so good. But as usual with these things it probably comes down to taste.

Trust me CiA, it can look better.
Try Serenity on a 50" LCD playing on BluRay.
Not to mention BluRay has far superior sound in my opinion.

I have a Playstation 3 too. Great buy, even if it's just for the media player side of things (I do play games too). Connects to your wireless network and you can stream your music and videos from your computer, as well as look through your photos, as well as watch DVD's and BluRays. Well worth the $500 AUD (around $400 US?)

Plus...PS3 has Uncharted....I'm fairly sure the main character Nathan Drake is based on Nathan Fillion (some of his lines are very Fillionesque)...not to mention the game's soundtrack is an amazing thing, by none other than Greg Edmonson.
(Yes, I know Uncharted came out a while ago, but I only just got it, as I only just got a PS3, and have been playing it nonstop in anticipation of the sequel {also being scored by Greg!} coming out this Wednesday!)

Anyway, yes, I'm buying Star Trek on BluRay, and yes, in my opinion, BluRay is worth it. Particularly if you like the Pixar films. Wall-E looks absolutely beautiful.

Saw it in the movie theater and the Blu-Ray version has already been preordered from Amazon.

Star Trek (the original-I know, I'm ancient compared to everyone else around here) was my first SciFi series on TV and I really enjoyed the movie.

I have a Sony BR player and a 40 in Toshiba HDTV that's awesome. My daughter has an XBox 360 that we use for Netflix etc. She also can connect the PC with just a changes of wires for Hulu on the big screen.

BTW you can get a small, wireless Roku player for about $100. It streams Netflix and Amazon UnBox services to a TV rather well.

There also have been rumors for some time that Hulu would join Netfix and Amazon on the Roku but there haven't been any announcements.

It was a HARD choice for me, deciding between the PS3 and the Xbox360. And I'm not convinced I made the right choice.

But Sony dropped the price of the PS3, so I bit. And then, of course, the Xbox dropped its price as well... :(

I still haven't even tried online play.

My wife and I *do* spend too much time in front of the TV, but it is pretty much our entire entertainment budget, so we rationalize it that way. :)

The same here. I find that there are few movies that I want to pay to see in a movie theater. Most are so bad I won't even order the DVD from Netflix.

Star Trek was an exception though. A local theater has started showing the big movies in digital format but even that won't lure me unless I know the movie is good.

I loved the film but I don't dig Blu Ray. I've seen a couple of films on friends Blu Ray systems with the 'Ducks Nuts' sized flat Screen TV's with 5.1 surroundy sound and to me it all looks and feels a little too 'gamey' and weird.

But a great flick nonetheless - I'll just get it on the next format to dormat system...

That's somewhat understandable; I can see where there would be movies that WOULDN'T be better on BluRay, and ARE better a bit, ermmm... BluRry. :)

Band of Brothers, for instance - great show, powerful stuff, but it NEEDS the shakiness and jump-cut blurs to keep the tension up. The Shield is another show that comes to mind. Gritty action stuff is NOT what BluRay is best for.

I consider Band Of Brothers on Blu-ray to be one of the most faithful transfers on the market. The grain that you see is deliberately put there by the film makers to give it an older, grittier look. The same goes for the washed out colour scheme that is present throughout pretty much the whole show.
But what gets me is the detail you see in the uniforms, the threads that hold it all together, badges and buttons that look spot on. Dirt under the fingernails and on skin looks completely real, not like it was 'painted' on or placed there. Each cut and bruise can be seen in all the detail that was intended. The buildings stand out and look even more realistic and not like a set.

As for Star Trek it most definitely will look better on Blu-ray than DVD (unless they do a Gladiator style job on it). One of my top two eagerly awaited purchases on Blu-ray, the other one being Up. Disney always do a bang up job with their animations and all the Pixar films look truly fantastic.

I've seen stuff on Blu Ray too, and while I like it mostly, I just don't see enough improvement to warrant the cost. To tell ya the truth, if my CRT hadn't started doing the inevitable vertical warping thing, I would have stayed with that for a long time. But now with my 720 26" & upconvert player, I'm like a pig in poo. Lemme do the math...$300 for the LCD, $45 for the player, $20 for the HDMI cable...

$365- that's less than a 1080p LCD all by itself.

Spiderman 3 remains the only REALLY impressive thing I've seen on BR that my system can't nearly equal. But I find that Toby Maguire's skin variances are not of that much real interest to me after all.

There's your problem, as far as not seeing much difference - the size of your screen. The difference between upscaled DVD and Blu Ray to the human eye is negligible on screens under 35 inches or so, especially at 720p. You can tell a difference if you look closely, but not a lot. To get the full effect, you have to watch on a large screen, 40' or larger, in 1080p - then you'll see a difference.

Granted, that's a pricey proposition, and I don't have the gear for it myself. I have a 42' 720p set, which is getting outdated (bought it used from a friend, probably 5-6 years old now). I watched the latest Fast & Furious on BR on it the other day - and thought it looked pretty damned good. Then, I went to Best Buy, and they were playing the same flick on one of the new LCD screens, at 1080p, and I was blown away at how much better it loked than on my set.

Yeah, size matters. I saw Serenity in BR on a 1080 19" LCD at Buymore, and it honestly looks better on my system at home. If I ever go above a 32" screen, I'd have to get a Blu Ray player for sure. But at 26"- not a biggie.

Story and LWaves: Good points; I hadn't thought of it that way. And honestly, I haven't seen BoB on BluRay, so it was a gut reaction I had that it wouldn't be improved by the higher resolution.

I suppose it's like with any photography or sound recording: It's always better to start with MORE resolution and clarity, and you can always manipulate it downward from there if need be.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'll probably curse you for it later, because now I'm going to have to look for Bob on sale on BluRay!

I'm in that same boat - not that I could afford a new set if it happened. But I really like those new LED sets.

My really old one from 2008 is pretty good.

Ah - see, mine's from '07, and LCD technology seemed to be progressing in leaps and bounds at that time. I love my Westinghouse (ESPECIALLY the multitude of inputs on the rear panel), but now I'm seeing stuff with a much faster refresh rate, and in certain scenes (and I notice it far more on certain networks), I can't help but see the blockiness of pixelation.

Time marches on, and what once was fabulous and new is now old and quaint...

Anyhoo, I think I'll be Trekking on BluRay.

Just thought I'd say that a lot of the shops that play BluRays leave the 'MotionPlus' option on. MotionPlus is GREAT for sport, but if you leave it on during films, it looks awful. It basically smooths everything out and makes it look fake (I think it's supposed to make it more 'real' interestingly enough....)

I'm not sure if this is what you saw, but just be aware that this happens often (at least here in Australia).

What the heck is with all you "one television household" people?? You all live in one-room apartments or something? Yer supposed to have one for the basement, one for living room, one for bedroom, one for rec room, one for kitchen. Get with it. I don't even have a TV channel to recieve and I know this stuff.
