J.D. Shapiro, Battlefield Earth's screen writer, tells a great story bout how he ended up writing for one of the suckiest movie ever made.

LMAO sounds like a Rodney Dangerfield line

I guess any fame can be good... Even in a Ed Wood sort of way

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

It is good of him to apologize. Battlefield Earth is classic sci-fi and the movie just totally blew. Really bad. So bad it has become an MST3K substitute around our house to heckle and tear apart whenever we feel the need to punish ourselves by watching it.

Not like he's soley responsible for it's failure. Travolta had the script re-written, the direction was awful, and the acting and FX were lame throughout. Plenty of blame to go around on that POS.

I spotted one pretty nice background in it.

Thank you so much for posting this, Haken. I can't stop laughing.

Y'know, that movie used to be on HBO pretty often, and I actually *TRIED* to watch it, several different times. And I shit you not - I could never get more than maybe 20 minutes of it - no matter where I came in - before just groaning and crying "Uncle!".

And I watched Gigli. On purpose. And Showgirls. Twice. I kind of have a thing for truly abominable movies, because sometimes they're so bad and campy, they become entertaining in entirely unintended sways. But not Battlefield Earth. It simply can't be watched. It's pure torture.

One of the other few really horrible big-budget ones that I cannot get through, no matter what, is "Ishtar". Again, I've actually sat down and tried to, more than once. More than twice, even. Can't be done, at least by me. It's not more than ten minutes into the movie, and already the hair on the back of my neck is standing up in embarrassment for Hoffman and Beatty. Battlefield Earth gave me that feeling, too. Poor Forest Whitaker; how'd he ever get roped into that?

Shapiro's article was hilarious. He's moved on, but I don't think he's ever really gotten over it. But as long as he can point and laugh (especially at Scientology), he'll be okay.

Heck, maybe we should start our own Mystery Science Theatre (or Mister Sinus Theatre, or Master Pancake Theatre, like they have here) and try to joke our way through some of these horrors...

Not SciFi, but I nominate "Heaven's Gate".
