Both of these are coming out in HD near the end of the month and I can only afford one of them at the moment but I can't decide which to get. The other will end up being on my Santa wishlist but which do I get first.
I keep going over the pros and cons but can't figure out a winner so I'll put it down to you guys and gals.

Some points:

Both are basically the same price.
Alien has 4 films and BTTF has 3 but only 2 Alien movies are great whereas all 3 BTTF movies are great.
Both have extensive bonus features.
I love both series for different reasons.

So if you could only purchase one of them which would it be?

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Depends on which one has the best HD transfer. There have been several films I would have bought if it had not been for the fact that most reviews have said the quality was not good enough to upgrade to the new format for films I already had on DVD, which look fine using a good up-converting DVD player.

A good point that I agree with completely. I had thought of it but didn't add to my post for some reason. It will definitely play it's part and I'll be checking review sites nearer the time.
But for the purposes of this question assume that video and audio is of an equally high standard.

I would go with The Alien Anthology first. I've seen some screenshots, and it looks pretty fantastic. Also all previous, and brand new bonus material=60 HOURS OF FEATURES
That's right, I said 60.

I would lean Aliens myself. BTTF is s better series overall (though I don't agree 2&3 are "perfect") but Alien and Aliens are two of my favorite films ever, and the new Cameron-supervised HD transfer of Aliens looks sweeeeeeet.

The Doc Brown thing in the third one is a lot better when you realize he's had forty more years added to his life to the anti-aging therapy he says he had in the second movie. That makes him the equivalent of forty, even if his hair is still grey and he still looks old.

All three of them are lots of fun. :)

One of my friends would say Aliens, but I'm a BTTF fan through and through.

Really? Amazon has the Alien set for $94.99 and BTTF for just $48.99. With that much of a difference I'd have to side with BTTF, besides there's at least one of the Alien films I might never watch again. But I have the first three Alien movies and the BTTF trilogy on DVD already, I can be satisfied with those for now.

What I have my eye on right now is the newly restored Metropolis on Blu-Ray, and it's just $29.99.

If you can find the Alien set for $48.99 definitely get that. If not, get the Alien set.

I love BTTF also, but an upconverted DVD set is good enough (even though I never sent in my misframed DVD).

I can't explain why the price is so high for the US version of the Alien set. I've heard talk of a limited edition 'egg' box but conflicting reports about it. I hope Amazon.com have just got the price muddled up with the picture/info.

In the UK we have the Alien set priced at £41 and BTTF at £42 on the website I use called www.dvd.co.uk
Amazon.co.uk have them priced a few quid differently but I won't be using them.
So over here the prices are basically the same.

Hmm, one thing that might make me pick up the BTTF set - it includes some of the nere-seen footage of Eric Stoltz as Marty. A preview:

Personally I'd choose Back to the Future.

I love the first one and am so so with the 2nd and 3rd, but the charm of all three together overall give me a better sense of a rounded story.

Alien for me is perhaps the perfect film. I can't think of a single unecessary moment in that film. But the others lack somewhat and feel a little disassociated from one another when viewed as a complete story.

Therefore Back To The Future wins.

Also it's a flick I'd love to sit and watch with my family.

America loves a winner!

Tough call.

Alien was amazing, and I even liked the sequel a good bit too. After that, the franchise lost me.

Still, if I'm getting both, and want a really cool surprise on Christmas Day, I'd rather open up and see that Alien egg than a souped up DeLorean on the cover.

WOW. Give us a hard one, whydoncha?

I might have to lean towards the Alien flicks- they depend more heavily on the visuals- BTTF is the superiour overall story, and can cruise well on standard DVD definition, IMO.
