Unfortunately, that's all it really has going for it. It was like fern gully or Pocahontas, but with cool creatures and weapons. Spoilerish mini rant Select to view spoiler:"Oh we have this hard-to-findium that's worth a lot so we'll kick them out of this area to get at it. Okay, we kicked them out, got access to the stuff, so lets chase them down and try to kill more of 'em cause we're one dimensional characters and we just love killin' indians... er navi." It's possible I may be a little biased because the friend who told me to go see it claimed it was better than Star Wars and made some less than favorable comments regarding Marines. I grew up watching dad's old star wars cassette tapes and my grandpa and sister are Marines. I almost waited until it came to the dollar theater to see it out of spite.

Quote:Originally posted by TheHappyTrader: Yes, I know they weren't and that the hero is a Marine, I was referring to what a person said regarding marines. My friend seemed to think real marines were no better, but that ain't Avatar's fault. Just acknowledging that I might have started off with a bit of a bias on account of someone telling me it's better than my favorite movies and then telling me about how negatively it portrays the Marine Corps (both of which were lies of course).
Quote: Not upsetting, just a tired unoriginal idea. The entire private security company (save our hero and the chopper girl) were one dimensional B Flat bad guys. The Navi were interesting, our hero was interesting, the special effects were amazing, but the big bad and the plot... simple, lame and overdone. I like more complex villains, like the operative.

That would make an interesting moral situation when they return to Pandora. Actually, is there any word on the sequel? I haven't heard anything, but really haven't been paying attention either.

Actually, it was a callout to SF fandom: "unobtanium" is a sarcastic term for all those imaginary substances like Dilithium, Beryllium Spheres, Naquada, Element X, Dureum, Neutronium, or Cavorite used in SF as maguffins or to hand-wave away the laws of physics. Unfortunately, "The Core" got there first.

Because the rest of the world is bigger than us, and action translates more easily than other genres.

I liked being in Pandora much more than anything else. The story was mediocre at best, but the way it was told, the FX and the acting perfs were top notch. Saw it twice: with my son and with my 2 nieces. Everyone enjoyed it, and my son is hard on movies (it has to be excellent for him to like it). So, there you have it. I think that they added the extra footage from Pandora because thats most people liked about the film. SGG Tawabawho?
