I've been reading and watching the Appleseed series since I was a kid. Looks like another movie is on its way.

Wait, is this a new movie or the series that was being planned?

Either way, I'm a bit ambivalent; Appleseed and Ex Machina are two of my favourite movies of all time, and Ex Machina is one of the handful of sequels ever made that transcends its "sequel-ness" and stands on its own merits.

Really, given how Ex Machina handled it (treating the first movie as "bonus" backstory rather than a major event that needed to be revisited and re-explained), there's no reason that same universe couldn't have continued. The characters don't need to be re-introduced; just pick them up where they are and go from there.
