There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Since I read this great news I've been asking myself two questions.

1) What if Firefly had come along a few years later with DVR and online streaming now being taken into account?

2) Why weren't these guys in charge of FOX in 2002?

Fringe Gets Renewed for Final, 13 Episode Season
Written By Sam McPherson on Thursday, April 26th, 2012

Fringe fans can finally stop chewing their fingernails -- FOX has renewed the fan favorite sci-fi series for a fifth and final season of thirteen episodes. The announcement came on Thursday, after weeks of nervous anticipation leading up to the announcement of the fate of the bubble show. Despite the cautious optimism of executive producers J.H. Wyman and Jeff Pinkner, fans were worried that the series might come to an abrupt conclusion in just a few weeks, at the end of its fourth season. Now, however, we have an ending in sight.

In a press release, FOX president Kevin Reilly, an outspoken fan of the show, had this to say about the show's renewal: "Fringe is a remarkably creative series that has set the bar as one of television’s most imaginative dramas. Bringing it back for a final 13 allows us to provide the climactic conclusion that its passionate and loyal fans deserve. The amazing work the producers, writers and the incredibly talented cast and crew have delivered the last four seasons has literally been out of this world. Although the end is bittersweet, it’s going to be a very exciting final chapter.”

It's not just the end that's exciting -- with the show's renewal, it seems incredibly likely that J.J. Abrams will actually get to direct another episode. “All of us at Bad Robot are forever indebted to our viewers and the amazingly supportive FOX network for allowing the adventures of Fringe Division to not only continue, but to resolve in a way that perfectly fits the show," the co-creator added in a statement.

It's news like this that gives me a little more faith in the power of network television. Fringe has always been a show that deserved its own proper resolution, and the fact that it will actually get one can only be seen as absolutely positive.

The show's renewal also might be partially due to the involvement of Fringinuity, a group of fans who have launched surprisingly effective Twitter campaigns targeting the advertisers for the show -- campaigns so effective, as it turns out, that FOX started using them to promote the show, too. If fans of any future shows need somewhere to look for a successful campaign, it couldn't hurt to give those guys a glance.

Fringe will return for the twentieth episode of its fourth season, "Worlds Apart," tomorrow night, April 27, at 9/8c on FOX.

Firefly was doomed before broadcast. “There was a point while we were making Firefly when I asked the network not to pick it up: they’d started talking about a different show.” - Joss Whedon http://dannystack.blogspot.com/2009/01/joss-whedons-top-10-writing-tip

I think the general sense that Fox made a huge mistake in cancelling Firefly when they did handed an awful lot of shows that followed it extra seasons - Chuck, Dollhouse, Friday Night Lights and now Fringe would have been cancelled if they'd done as badly as they did in 2002 but Firefly showed that DVD numbers and a devoted fan base could offer alternative financial routes than plain network advertising.

Sad for us but congrats to Fringe and its fans.

STORYMARK

What is surprising about the pick-up from Fox is - they make diddly off the DVD sales. It's not a Fox production, but a WB show - so Fox only makes money from the normal airings.... and it's been (on average) their lowest rated show for a couple years. Lower ratings even than the just-cancelled, much, much less expensive COPS.

Word is that WB wants to push to 100 episodes so much (as that's the sweet spot for ancilliary sales) that they are essentially giving the show to Fox for free this year - paying for it all out of their pocket with no investment from Fox at all.

But Im happy - now I just need to get caught up on season 4.

"Goram it kid, let's frak this thing and go home! Engage!"

It is good news indeed. Probably like many I always had a fear that this show would just get cancelled and there would never be any type of resolution. I've always said that shows like this should run between 5-7 seasons and then finish. Any longer is dragging it out. That amount gives them enough to time build a universe and establish whatever over-arching plots they need but without going too far and filling a season up with poor episodes and dragging out any main plot.
On the surface it seems like some shows that have a good fanbase and run for several years are getting to either close on their terms (Lost, new BSG) or are being given a shorter resolution season (Chuck, Fringe). Hopefully this is a good sign for other shows but somehow I doubt it.
