At no point (that memory serves) are there any 'cute' critters in the originals that bore no relevance to the plot.

If you're referring to the gophers, that's such a minor thing, really.

Marion in Raiders is tough, independent and yes, she's in love with Indy. After the first few scenes with her in KOTCS she seemed to turn into a lovestruck teen

I didn't get that- I found that she was having fun playing with him, especially with the tree stunt.

Mac was cruelly wasted with a 'is he/isn't he a traitor' plotline.

Yeah, well they had me with the double/triple agent thing, but maybe I'm just an easy mark.

The originals had a sense of wonder and of trepidation that you didn't know where they were going to go with it. Or what exactly was going to happen once the finale came around. KOTCS was predictable once they opened the crate and the bag was opened. Maybe it was just me but I thought aliens straight away.

I thought KOTCS's end was no more predictable than TOD or LC (which were pretty predictable, yeah).

Also KOTCS seemed to recycle parts from the other movies (and many non Indy movies as well). They all did it to some minor extent but not on this scale. KOTCS had a distinct whiff of unoriginality about it.

Hard to avoid in a franchise almost 30 years old IMO.

The humour in the first three was timed perfectly and came just when it was needed (for the most part). In KOTCS it seemed to fall flat.

Okay- I see what you mean because my first viewing left me with the feeling it wasn't as funny as it should be, but on my 2nd & 3rd viewings (yes, this week...) I see the humour is there, just more subtle, plus, I missed some lines first time around- I think it's a pretty funny flick in spots now.

And these aren't differences but the Tarzan impression by Mutt was laughable.

Like Chewies' was in Jedi- these idiots are obsessed, whatch gonna do?

Also his sword fighting whilst balancing on moving jeeps was just ridiculous (putting aside how fake it looked). He's a student, she's a trained killer. That just goes too far over the line.
Movie.
Have we forgotten the raft outta the plane escape so soon???

And on a personal note why can they mention Henry Sr. and Marcus but not mention Sallah?

I would have liked that myself, but hey- I'm just amazed Marion was in it- that was the biggest flaw in LC as far as I'm concerned!!!

My major complaint: after seeing some special features, I thing the flick was too meticulously plotted out in animated storyboards, leaving no room for on set innovation; if you got any paint-by-numbers feel from the movie, I should think that's why. A few million less in the budget and a shorter pre-production schedule might have helped it some IMO.

G'night mate.

I will concede slightly that more humour came through on my second viewing. But IMO it still wasn't enough. And I never expected a miracle of a perfect film, like some Star Wars fans did for the first prequel. I just wanted something above the average bar for a film featuring and created by such talented people. I felt it didn't get close to the bar.

As for the raft out of the plane in TOD then I can actually live with that. Falling great distances into water (and surviving) is a staple of these films IMO. Please note that I didn't knock the triple waterfall scene from KOTCS.
Ford's characters seem invulnerable to water as he survived a death drop in The Fugutive as well.

You make some other good points and it just shows how two people can have two different takes on the same thing. I usually (but not always) find myself agreeing with your point of view, at least in some way.

Right that's it. No more KOTCS talk for me. I've had enough of it for now.

See you in another thread my friend.
Have you seen Incredible Hulk yet?
