I think the trilogy is just awesome, but my favourite is the last one. It has a special ethereal quality for me (although Max's Ford Falcon is nowhere to be seen in it ). Maybe it's Maurice Jarre's completely inappropriate & amazing score...or Blaster's face...I dunno.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Road Warrior, no doubt about it.

Beyond Thunderdome is as bad an ending to the trilogy as Revolutions was for The Matrix.

I gotta give the nod to Road Warrior - but the whole tale is your basic wandering samauri epic told from a different perspective, really.

Not that Thunderdome didn't have it's moments, like the "leave your weapons here" scene, and the kid holding up a train with dual wielded rifles, heh.

Actually one strange thing I noticed last time I watched it was The Collectors little blond flunky, she has the prettiest eyes, she does.
(she's the one in the "Face the Wheel" scene)

Tina Turner was epic as Auntie, too, especially at the very end.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I always felt as though the first movie existed in a different universe or timeline from the other two.

The first movie has a comparatively normal society with property, police, courts, and even legal paperwork. It has a sort of 'wild west' feel where anything might happen outside the city, but marshalls of a sort exist to extend the arm of law and order. Commerce exists, with goods being transported by truck (if memory serves) and the law officers in the film receive regular pay. One of the characters even has a vacation house in the country if I recall.

The next two movies take place in post-apocalyptic wastelands where cities and civilizations are practically mythical. Only small strongholds controlled by gangs of people or regional lords seem to exist. The feel here is less Wild West and more Dark Ages. There is no sense that a real civilization exists anywhere.

Does anyone else get this feeling from the films?

Anthony:

I always kind of took it that Mad Max took place as civilization crumbled, and the sequels took place after that crumbling was pretty much done. It does seem like they rather accelerated the rate of crumbling, but the end result didn't look too unrealistic, sadly...

This has got to be a joke. You may be the only human alive that thinks Thunderdome is better than Road Warrior. Even Mad Max it 10 times the movie Thunderdome is. Don't get me wrong , I enjoy Thunderdome, but come on dude it sucks when compared to the others.

Mad Max, the original movie, was far more poignant in its depictions of the spouse left at home alone during dangerous times, and the very real consequences of motorcycle and automobile wipeouts. George Miller got it right the first time.

Having said that, Road Warrior had the greater visceral appeal.

Thunderdome sucked rox, what with it's lack of a kewl car.

Road Warrior is 1.
Mad Max is 2.

After taking a chance on this nobody mel gibson, Mad Max was a hit and they needed another flick with this character, but with the angst of not replacing his love lost, his dead wife. They also wanted a more worldwide audience. They marveled at the success and marketing of the Eastwood Man-with-No-Name concepts. The Stranger (rereleased as "Fistfull of Dollars"), The Two Strangers (rereleased as "For a Few Dollars More"), The Three Strangers (rereleased as "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"), High Plains Drifter, Outlaw Josie Wales, etc.
The Amercian Civil War was the time of tremendous change, and so suggesting the future war of Australia was one way to bridge the 2 films with he same character.
I didn't think it the smoothest, but it did seem to work. IIRC Star Wars I and IV had a bit of a time gap in them as well.

Invalid comparison; no movie sequel ever made was as bad as Matrix Revulsions.
It makes Battle For The Planet Of The Apes look like Shakespeare.

I didn't say it was better (it's definitely not), just that it's my favourite, Kirk. The way Star Trek TMP is my favourite Trek film.

I lurve the first one, and for a while it was my favourite. Then the second one was, for its narrative quality. But I totally over-watched them. I just bought Thunderdome, and find that I really like it- I miss the Falcon, but I dig the characterizations & cool ending.

"Two days ago, I saw a rig that could haul that tanker. You people want to get out of here? Talk to me!" Max

The Road Warrior! No contest.

Thunder Dome was okay, but I could have done without the "Captain Walker" section. More Barter Town, less goofy kids!

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

You just quoted Mel's biggest chunk of dialogue in that movie.
