just to be clear. I've seen all of S1 of the new Galactica two times now and the second run through my boyfriend and I played this game:

who else is a Cylon? and why?

so we know that Boomer is a Cylon and of course Six and the two male Cylons. so we know 4 of the 12 models. leaves us with 8 unknown Cylons.

here's one guess we came up with:

----- SPOILERS for S1 of Galactica -----

Select to view spoiler:

Lt Gaeta (sp?) might well be a Cylon. If you don't recognise the name, it's the nice southern europe looking bridge officer who calculates the FTL jumps and was assigned to Gaius Balter to help with the Cylon detector.

and here's some reasons why we think he's a Cylon:

1 the EP where Baltar was framed by Six for blowing up some building back home. Gaeta first said the picture was genuine and as soon as Six decided Baltar was repentant enough to let him off the hook Gaeta found out the picture was a manip. very convenient.

2. in the very last scene of the very last EP, Boomer came onto the bridge and before Adama arrived Gaeta went over to her and shook her hand (or didn't he?) off camera. the camera dropped just in that second to almost show their hands but didn't. was he giving her the gun?

so and now I want to read your speculations about who might or might not be Cylon and why. might make the waiting for S2 a bit more fun, I'm in serious withdrawal right now.

I'm not going to read your spoilers, I'm just following the show on scifi chan.

This is what my brain thinks although I'm reluctant to agree with it... (clever disclaimer, no?)

Starbuck~ The cylon she interogated was far too interested in her, knew her name (know that could have been a lucky guess), told her what gods she prayed to. Perhaps he knew her programming? She seemed to read the cylon well, about his pain and fear. She's very resillient, was able to get the cylon raider to function. After seeing Boomer on Caprica running non stop in the sewer from the cylons, it reminded me of Starbuck's overall strength. Also, Six's concern with her.

Another guess was the presidents assistant, because he's close to a person in power, and seems to be under the radar. I can't remember how he became the pres.'s asst. though, so I'm not completely keen on that guess.

please don't read the spoiler if you haven't seen the last EP yet. I'd really donT' want to spoil anyone.

the presidents assistant - Billy is his name I think - was one of my guesses too but I can't come up with any reasons why. he was Roslin's assistant before she became president/important. maybe the Cylons knew she was gonna survive and planted him there ahead of time?

and don't even suggest Starbuck could be Cylon. I so do love and admire her. she's my hero. screw-up and all. so take it back immediately *big grin*.
good argument though. but I like to believe she's just strong, not Cylon.

no more guessing game fans here? or do the spoilers keep people out? we might need to wait a few more weeks so everyone's at the same place.

season 2 is just too far away. as is Serenity of course.

There's only a spoiler here if you haven't seen the mini-series, so I'm assuming everyone's seen that.
I think all the major characters are Cylons. The Cylons feel they need to destroy all humankind by whom they feel threatened, but don't know where Earth is so they construct a scenario where a remnant of colonists with what they hope is a residual cultural memory of Earth's location will search out all remaining humankind under Cylon direction, giving them what hints and covert encouragement they can.

EDIT: for those that need clarification of mini-series

I know this doesn't exactly address 'who's a cylon?', but I just had to see if anyone else thinks the way I do...

Anyone think that the Cylons have MUCH more control over the fleet than anyone realizes?

It just seems that with each passing episode, someone is tested in some way by the Cylons, whether it be Starbuck, Lee, Baltar, Helo, Tigh... even the Sharons. Now that I think of it, I'm wondering if there is something else besides the Cylons that is judging/testing everyone, Human and Cylon alike. They all run into situations where they're overwhelmed and have to deal with it in some way to resolve it without causing too much harm. (and yes, I realize this is the basis for a good drama, but it seems very... I dont know, connected, or planned, but in a way such that you think it's not planned by the writers, but someone within the show itself)

All in all, Battlestar is among the best scifi I've ever seen. I'm constantly intrigued by the plot-twists, and the characters, whether likeable or unlikeable, are extremely believeable.

On a side note: Is anyone besides me a twisted little Baltar/Starbuck shipper?

So, for drama's sake, just imagine how Starbuck would react when she found out who Baltar really is...

Leading up to the ass-kickage, of course, would be a very interesting storyline. The stalward courage and goodness of Starbuck vs. the twisted corruption and self-absorbtion of Baltar. Kara would never sink to his level, but I'm wondering if she would have any kind of polarizing effect on him... could she crack the "I'm not at fault" shell Gaius has around himself, and the hold that (imaginary?) #6 has over him?

They're such polar opposites, I've just got to wonder what kind of effect they would have on each other. Then again, I was a Max/White shipper during Dark Angel, and a Darien/Allianora shipper during The Invisible Man.

So yeah, I've got issues with bad guy/good guy relations, but it WOULD be very interesting, no?

(If not, at least you know there's a good ass whupin' in Gaius' future. Possibly some airlock action as well.)

I will not say anything.

it is an interesting thought though. just keep on watching and come back here once you're through.

and here's another question: do you think cylons replace existing people or do they 'invent' new ones?

this question kinda decides if 'older' people like the president and commander Adama could be cylons or not.

You know, I'd just like to point out, for the sake of making it known, I don't think that Cylons replace existing people, though I do believe they had a presence on the Colonies for a VERY long time before the actual attack. As for there only being twelve Cylon models, I thought that there was only one person who knew that, as far as humans go, and that was Adama. As for who might be a cylon, Gaeta is a good guess, I don't really know about the rest.

Oh MAN! I feel like Kaylee looked after Jayne said "that's why I never kiss 'em on the mouth."

find a happy place, Find A Happy Place, FIND A HAPPY PLACE!

First thing I did when I got in here was do a search for "boxey" and find it odd that no one has mentioned him as a candidate.

If he were, that might explain how the latest Cylon infiltrator knew Starbuck's name and everything. Because she had been spending time with Boxey and he unknowingly transmitted the information back to the Cylon mainframe.

Besides, it would be a good reason to do away with a character I've always deemed unnecessary. Yes, he's been changed for this series, but still... why?

It's a nice theory, but doesn't take into account Gaius' extreme sense of self-preservation, or the "me me me me me" aspect of his psyche. He'd see any liaison with Starbuck as a good grapple with a woman of power and that's that. In fact, I could see the #6 mirage "watching" during the act.

Oh, and now I'm feeling whoozy again....

Just a note on the number of Cylon models. If we count the full-on machene type soldier Cylons as a model and the bio-engineered space fighter type as another model, that makes 6 models that we know about.

I believe we can definitely count the chrome "toaster" models from the original series. One of them was displayed in the museum hangar pod on Galactica in the mini-series and 6 referred to them saying; "Those models are still around. They have their uses."

You may also want to consider if the Cylon Basestars count as a model type.

That's a good one. Maybe their version of 'Deep Thought' spit out the number 12 instead of 42.

I noticed there are 12 Colonial Planets. Maybe it has something to do with that.

Actually, before our current yearly calendar, there were 13 zodiac signs.

Note that the 12 Colonies are all based on the zodiac.

So, what was Zodiac 13? Ophidiuchus. The Snake-bearer. . .

Don't feel dumb. If you didn't see the classic BSG, you wouldn't know who Boxey was. Count yourself fortunate, for the rest of us who do are scarred for life.

In the original version of BSG, Boxey was about six or seven years old. He started as Serina's son, then Apollo's adopted son after Serina was killed. There was a nice romance between Apollo and Serina, and of course the Cylons killed her, leaving Apollo to "soldier on" and raise her son as his own. Mostly, Boxey was the "kid factor." He spent the entire series chasing after a chimpanzee in a "daggit" suit shouting "Muffy! Muffy! Darn you daggit!"

In the current version, Boxey is a war orphan. You may recall the pre-teen kid in the pilot that Boomer took under her wing after she took him off Caprica. Later, Starbuck brought him into a pilot breifing and he mouthed off to Tigh. That's the current version of Boxey. Thing that gets me though, is that the original Boxey at least had a reason for being on board the Galactica, being Apollo's son and Adama's grandson. The current version doesn't have that. He should have been shuffled off to one of the civilian ships, but he's still there.

Yeah, but he seems to have been adopted as the pilots' collective mascot. Most of the pilots (Starbuck just being the most prominent example) seem to have a willingness to thumb their noses at "proper procedure" when it gets in the way (and Adama's casual command style probably doesn't help). I can easily see them "aiding and abetting the stowaway" as a minor way to p*ss off Tighe.

I actually like the new version, I wish he'd turn up more.

MISTRESSOFUSELESSKNOWLEDGE

I am a total BSG geek now - the new series is awesome! Ron Moore has stated in interviews that the number 12 is significant - 12 colonies, 12 gods in the pantheon, 12 models of Cylons, 12 snakes in the dream. Also, that next season will focus even more on the cylons "faith" and religion, that Six loves to push onto Baltar. I for one got the heebie jeebies when Baltar looked up and said "I AM an instrument of God." Talk about your personality disorders and delusions of grandeur. This is great story-telling, because of great characters like Baltar, Adama, Boomer, the President, and of course Starbuck.
I just wish Apollo got a little more time - but at least he finally got some serious flyboy action at the base. Now, who do I think would be the cylon? Gaeta is a possible one, as is Dualla, the female on the bridge who makes all the calls for Adama. Also, any number of the press people - there seem to be 20-30 of those around at any time.

I am not sure - mostly because I haven't figured out just what those Cylons are up to yet. They seem to like playing with the humans' heads more than they want to destroy them. I agree with the poster who said it seems like everyone is being tested, possibly by some superior being or force. I can't wait to find out. I love not being able to predict what is going to happen - Lost is the same way! These are the two best shows out there right now!

DELERIAD

I must admit I came to Firefly through BSG. I had been blown away by the mini series and wanted more. I noticed that Zoic were involved with Firefly and figured that if Whedon was writing it that it would be worth shelling out for the DVD. Between BSG, Firefly and now the new Doctor Who this is a good time to be a geek.

Anyway, my personal vote is for Billy to be a toaster. In the miniseries he joins up with Roslin just as she's going to Galactica so he's new. He claims to have a family who are now conveniently dead and every time he fetches Roslin water, something odd happens. I know that Gatea's the favourite candidate among many though. I won't say more because I'm guessing that most here have yet to see the final two episodes.

Boxey's obviously a Cylon. Though the paranoia among the colonials will make it unlikely that the tin daggit will make an apearance (count your blessings).
I dont want to give too much away about the last two episodes for those that have'nt seen them but I cant help thinking that the Cylons already know where Earth is, getting the colonials to lead them there is just too obvious a hook.
And what about that other quote from their religious writings: "This has all happened before, and it will all happen again."

BOBSUNCORP

Season 1 Spoilers!!

*************************************************

Has everyone forgotten about Col Tigh's wife? The way she turned up was extremely suspicious and at first everyone did believe she was a Cylon until Baltar said she wasn't. But we also know he faked the test, so it is still possible.

I believe the reason there are only 12 is because the Cylons took 12 humans prisoner in the last war and can clone them, only with a Cylon brain (presumably something that cannot be detected with an x-ray as that would be too easy). This procedure will only work if the clone can be grown with the brain already inside, limiting them to the models they already have. I suppose they could take another prisoner but then would have to wait for its clone to grow to maturity before it can be used for infiltration.

Also It would strike me again and again that the stuff that No6 put baltar through seemed to be a form of brainwashing, as she succeeded in step by step making him believe in "God" and then to doing whatever she told him was Gods will by process of extreme stress and pain and pleasure stimulation ("there are 5 lights not 4"). This leads me to believe that some of the human form cylons are being created as humans who are then turned into agents like sleepers. Boomer (on BSG) I believe represents the end of this process, which is why she was acting like a sleeper, where she knew what was happening but could not control herself, or when she even did manage to overcome her programming briefly.

The point of all this however is that Baltar is himself a cylon. Look at the evidence: how the hell did he survive a direct hit by what looked like an extremely powerful shockwave that destroyed his house. He was sheltering by no6, but she is not exactly a fat girl and she said herself that she would survive the explosion even though her body wouldn't, so how did he? It seems to me that he woke up in an identical body some distance away, just like our metal friends. Then there is the fact that he is communicating with a cylon. Maybe he is crazy, maybe she is breaking the rules by talking to him (I believe her when she says she is in love with him) or maybe, he is a cylon who has not yet been programmed into acting as they want.

As for starbuck, I don't believe she is a cylon (although her ability to fly a cylon ship counts against her - but then original starbuck did that in original BSG so maybe that is just a homage) although I have been wondering about Billy, just simply because he is too fundamentally necessary to the smooth running of the presidency and therefore the government. His is the kind of position which is always most valuable to espionage agents as he is so useful he is almost above suspicion. Also he is too nice and too useful. Either he is a Cylon or he is the best nicest most efficient and helpful political aide ever. Years of watching shows where the scriptwriters try and shock the viewer has made me extremely cynical, although thankfully so far BSG has kept me guessing about how episodes turn out.

Finally I think the question has to be raised "who sent the info to Adama about there only being 12 models?" We never find out and it is never pursued. This must be info given to him by someone who knows therefore is a cylon themselves and in my opinion it is one of the people who do not know they are cylons but do know this info. Baltar or Boomer are the two strongest possibilities. If we had heard no6 tell Baltar then the answer would be obvious and it would mean that Gaius is trying to do his best, but we never have. Assuming he wasn't told off camera (that would be cheating) then the only way he would have known would be some hidden knowledge that he doesn't know he has and maybe he wouldn't even remember sending the message. Alternatively Boomer could be reacting the same way, as we know that she has suffered memory loss about what her other brainwashed self has been doing, possible also that she obtained this knowledge from same source.

Or it could be one of the cylons that were hiding on the ship at that point who are just trying to mess with Adama's head.

Ok end of rant.

Here's a list of statements/inferences that I made up after last week's episode. I'm not sure it really makes sense, but they do seem to fit together.

"This has all happened before and will happen again."

"Before the exodus, humanity lived with the gods on Kobol."

There are 12 lords of Kobol.

There are 12 types of Cylon.

Apollo is the name of one of the gods.

Apollo is the call sign of Lee Adama.

"Adama is a Cylon."
