My obsession with Firefly has made me wonder:

Should I watch Buffy?

Seriously, I know about the gargantuan fanbase who loves it so much madly and that whole same-writer thing, and the fact that it prominently features lesbians makes queer lil me happy, but...is it actually good? Why or why not? Mostly, I guess--is it much like Firefly?

It's not really anything like Firefly, but it is a good watch. Lots of ass kicking girl action, teen angst, and magic. the lesbian story line isn't for a few seasons, but is a great addition

Yes, Watch Buffy.

The first season is slow, but you can immediately see the potential for the characters- and the line "This new cream rinse isn't creamy and it isn't... rinsy!" is classic.

But before the end of Season 1, you will be in love with the characters and want nothing more than to be part of their lives.

The other real bonus to Buffy is that if, like me, you work out at home, the pacing is fabulous to work-out and watch at the same time. In fact, I'm using the excuse that I don't have the DVDs to NOT work out right now.

It ain't Firefly, but it ain't bad. Or, at least the first three seasons were entertaining - admittedly, I stopped watching after that due to time constraints.

Well...I have to add my 2 platinum here and say "WATCH IT!!!"

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is brilliant work, though admittedly a might slow at first cuz Joss is doing the proper exposition work over the first couple of seasons that made the entire series work as a whole. Makes one wish Firefly had been given even half the running time Buffy{/i] did.

Didn't know you were a Buffy fan, Ertia.

My brother bought the big damn box set (alright, the "Chosen Collection") and I holed myself up while he was working with nothing but a case of Dr. Pepper (yes, I've stooped to product placement) and a DVD remote. Since I still can't find work...I amuse myself with Joss's stuff.

I think a little chaos is in order.

I was never a big buffy fan, but I do like Angel and suggest you watch that. To me it is just more of an adult show without all the teenage highschool junk in it. And its darker, which I enjoy. I watched it when it was on TV and am now rewatching the DVDs.

Yeah, I guess. But be warned though that its nothing like Firefly. Also Angel is definetly better, but I recomend you watch some Buffy first anyway so that you can better get the story in Angel.

DAYVE

i'm a little late to this thread, but wanted to add my recommendation for Buffy... I saw the movie before the series was made, and thought it was a pretty novel idea so when Joss brought it to TV i was ready for it.

Looked forward to each weekly episode while it was on the tube, and now i have all the seasons (what is it ..seven?) on dvd. I liked the first season, and the early stuff... i like to see the actors grow into a role and grow up - in the first season, little Sarah M. Geller was just a confused teenager, but by the last episode of the last season, she is a hardened evil fighting machine. For me at least, the later seasons struggled with a tough story line, but all in all it was a great story. Also, the Buffy Musical is a real gem.

Lots of laughs & lots of fairly intense teenage angst...and well worth a look.

DESKTOPHIPPIE

Just adding my own opinion here. I adored Buffy and Angel, and would recommend them both to any browncoat.

Nope, they're not Firefly, but they're Joss and are similar to the show in all the ways that matter - great characters, great stories, snappy one liners, scenes that make you sob for hours and scenes you quote over and over again with other fans because it makes you so damn happy.

I will add one word of warning though. When you realise that there are hints to some of the big storylines three years in advance, when you watch the characters grow and develop and change in such realistic and believable ways, when you see the magnificent writing Mutant Enemy produces at it's best ('Becoming', 'The Zeppo', 'Hush', 'Fool for Love', 'The Body', 'Once More with Feeling') then you will ache for all the Firefly episodes that remain unwritten.

Well, I already ache constantly for Firefly episodes unwritten, so there's not too much worry there. Thanks, though, I'll definitey check it out now.

I say go ahead and watch it. It's not like it's not still reruning on TV, so it's not like you have to buy the DVDs right away. Go ahead and try it, you'll like it. I didn't watch it for a long time because I thought it was just some silly stupid teen show, but one day when nothing was on I watched some reruns on FX and was completely hooked after like a half an hour. And of course once you get to the final season our beloved Captain is in it and he's all super evil.

WEREALLJUSTFLOATING

Have to chime in on this one - seeing as I just got the Chosen Collection in the post this morning, it was like all my Xmases came at once!! If it wasn't for Buffy or Angel I would probably never have given Firefly a chance - and even then I was a little sceptical. And yes Buffy seems a little silly at first but it only gets better as it goes along. I feel the show actually improved in the later seasons, but I like my TV dark so what are you gonna do?

Firefly shared many of the same writers and directors, same actors, same special effects people, production design people, I could go on but you have to watch Buffy and Angel for yourself to really understand how great they are. Firefly is definitley the strongest show off the bat, in terms of how well all the elements gelled together from the get-go. But if you want to learn where Joss and co. honed their skills, then watch his first 2 shows. You can see how much experience he and his fellow writers gained on the 9 seasons or so(A +B combined)they had done by the time they got around to Firefly.

I can't imagine anyone who loves Firefly not loving these other Joss shows, you just need to give them the benefit of the doubt and if possible, watch them in the right order, I wish I had done that but better to have jumped in mid season 2 than never to have jumped in at all...

I got a way? Is that better than a plan?

Some of the writing's fairly snappy although seasons four and five were pretty bad.

It's a decent watch if you can ignore some of the awful fashion choices!

The lesbian thing doesn't kick in for a few seasons.
