CYBERSNARK

Han Solo was often described as a pirate. A misnomer, actually; he was a smuggler. Never actually stole from anyone who didn't have it coming. Star Wars space pirates (seen in novels, video games, comics, and the RPGs) are much more ruthless. There's a reason there're people like Boba Fett out there, "keeping the peace."

IIRC there were pirates in Farscape as well, though they (or rather, Moya) never hung around.

Various groups of alien pirates jumped Archer's Enterprise. In fact, Archer himself turned pirate when the situation demanded it (though the decision destroyed a little bit of his soul that he may never get back). Another group of pirates tried to steal the Enterprise-D, and ended up killed by Picard's badassitude. Picard and Riker later went undercover with another group of pirates.

Then, of course, there're the Orions seen in Enterprise and mentioned in TOS (and eventually, DS9's Orion Syndicate, which includes non-Orion species).

More Trekkian pirates can be found in the novels, including Captain Calhoun's asshole son, Xyon.

There's the *mumblemumble* Alliance in Stargate SG-1, who are less pirates and more a space-faring Mafia.

Plenty of pirates among the Transformers too, many of them led by Cannonball, who is technically a privateer.

Realistically, pirates are a fact of life in any advanced space-faring culture --there's money to be made by robbing heavily-laden cargo ships, and no government's ever been invented that could acurately police all of its claimed territory (yes, that includes the Federation).

"Ice Pirates" was pretty funny. Makes me want to see it again. First time I ever saw Robert Urich do comedy.

Now that you mention it, I have not seen it in years. I think I have to add it to my list of "Gotta get this one".
