SINGATE

I don't have Showtime so I had to wait for the DVDs to come out this past week. After picking this up Saturday, I blazed through the entire season over the course of the weekend. As an aside I would like to mention I bought this at Target for $30. Normally I wouldn't pay so much for a show with only 12 episodes but it really is the only option. It also came packaged with a copy of the book Darkly Dreaming Dexter the inspiration for the series, which is a pretty good bonus.

I wasn't sure where the series would head after the conclusion of season 1. Most especially, I was wondering how they would top the outstanding story arch surrounding the Ice Truck Killer. Now for the spoilers...

Instead of trying to top last season's bad guy the writers chose to make Dexter the villain who is being pursued by the law. This comes about due to some divers finding his cemetary in the ocean. It's bad enough that his dumping ground has been discovered but it is compounded by the fact that his own department, in conjunction with the FBI, are the ones investigating his crimes. This leads to a series of misadventures where Dexter is trying to cover his tracks from the inside.

Amidst all this chaos Dexter is dealing with several other problems. Rita's ex, whom Dexter framed, is killed in prison. Dexter admits that he did in fact set Paul up. She makes a leap in logic that the only way he could know about injecting someone with heroin is if he was also a user. She forces him to enter Narcotics Anonymous to get the help he needs. There he meets a women named Lilah. She convinces him to be the person he should be instead of hiding from himself. Of course she thinks he actually has a drug habit, not an addiction to murder. It turns out she is just as, if not more, fucked up than Dexter. When he breaks off their relationship she burns down her apartment. Later she frames Bautista for rape as a way of blackmailing Dexter. She also kidnaps Rita's child to lure him into a trap.

The big development in the season occurs when Dexter's nemesis, Sgt. Doakes, finds his treasure box of blood samples. Unfortunately for Doakes everyone starts looking his way as the prime suspect in the "Bay Harbor Butcher" case due to his recent erratic behavior. Before he can have the blood samples analyzed the feds find the samples in his car. With him being suspended and on the run everyone believes they have their killer.

Meanwhile, Dexter has tracked down the last living person who was involved in his mother's murder. After killing the man in a remote cabin he goes about disposing the body parts in a swamp. As he is walking down the dock Doakes appears behind him, gun drawn. Dexter luckily comes out on top in their altercation, locking Doakes away in the cabin. He decides that the best course of action is to let Doakes take the fall for the crimes of the Bay Harbor Butcher. This probably would not have worked out because several of the investigators were not buying Doakes as a serial killer. Enter Lilah. Her obsessive behavior lead her to steal Dexter's GPS, which had directions to the cabin. She arrives to find Doakes locked up. When he explains to her that it was Dexter who put him there, and that he is a serial killer to boot she decides to cover up the evidence by causing a gas explosion. I figured Doakes would not survive knowing what he knows but I was surprised by the manner of his death.

Believing she has done Dexter a great favor she expects him to be grateful and more than willing to resume their relationship. She is shocked to find out that he is upset with Doakes' death, whom Dexter states was a good and innocent man. Realizing this puts her in Dexter's crosshairs she flees the country. It looks as though she has escaped when we see her again in Paris. As she is looking through her mail she comes across a postcard with from Miami; on the back is a picure of Doakes. Dexter appears behind her with his needle and doles out his own version of justice.

By season's end balance is once again restored. For a while there I couldn't see how the tangled web would be unraveld. Once again the writers and actors have crafted a thoroughly engaging story. Can't wait for season 3.

DARKRECLUSE

the show is rather addicting. I was kind of shocked at what happened, but then again it was all pretty cool.

REGINAROADIE

Yeah. I have to say that DEXTER on a whole is pretty amazing. I remember hearing about it and wondering how Michael C. Hall could pull off playing a serial killer. If you've seen him for five years as David in SIX FEET UNDER, you'd think "There's no way this guy could do it." But in the first five minutes of the pilot, your jaw is on the floor and amazed at how he was able to transform himself. The same thing with Julie Benz. You think, "How can Darla be such a push over" But then you see her as this broken, but strong character and you're shocked once again. You completely buy her.

Raise of hands if you think a fanfic of Dexter crossing paths with Darla would be awesome.
