CHAPTERANDVERSE

I live in Ireland and tend to be forced to buy good Tv in the form of DVD boxsets. I am very poor at the moment--I would love to blame the economy, but I think it has more to do with my aforementioned habit--so I can only get one new boxset for the foreseeable.

I want it to be a good one, and I have heard good things/mixed reviews about a few shows. Since no one other grouping has such good taste, I humbly ask my fellow Browncoats to point me in the right direction.

Shows I love: Firefly (obviously), Angel, The Wire, Veronica Mars, Being Human, Spaced....well, you get the drift. I like fallible characters saying funny, smart things. I don't care if its dark or light, or both, as long as its good.

The shows that I have heard a lot about are: Chuck, Pushing Daisies, True Blood, and Dollhouse. Normally, I would go straight for Josh, but the bits of Dollhouse I have seen on the Internet left me thinking I should wait for series 2. If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know.

Cheers very much to anyone who takes the time to reply!

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I'll concur that both Chuck and Pushing Daisies are great, but another I would suggest is several years older. Wonderfalls, also from PD creator Bryan Fuller.

Thanks very much for the suggestions, though this makes the choice even harder!
I had forgotten about both of those, which I have also heard people rave about.

Anyone got strong opinions about which ones I should cross of my list?
Or any new suggestions that are worth bankruptcy?

Dollhouse was a little slow to begin with in my opinion but well worth it by the end of the series. I'm so glad I stuck with it and I can hardly wait for next season. Plus, Joss included lots of actors from other series he's done so that's always a treat. I have to say Amy Acker was my favorite!

Thank Universal for airing Firefly in HD at

My vote is for Chuck, its pretty clever, and funny.

Also, Big Bang Theory is pretty good.

I'm a CHUCK & PD fan as well but I'm also a big Supernatural fan. You may want to check that out too. It's got a bit O' everything in it for all types.

Peace,

Dollhouse is far more serial then episodic -it will greatly benefit from being able to see every episode in order (on your own schedule). Some people love this kind of show, but networks, as a rule, don't (they reward regular viewers rather than the large "whatever's on" demographic).

I'll second Wonderfalls, Chuck, and Supernatural. I also love NCIS, Medium, and (digging through the "oldies" section) Gilmore Girls (NCIS and Gilmore Girls aren't really "genre" --they're a straightforward cop show and a dramedy, just with really well-crafted characters and sharp-witted hilarity). Other (slightly older) shows to see are Jeremiah and Farscape. Both Stargate series (SG-1 and Atlantis) are good lighthearted fun.

Of course, since you're on that side of the Pond, I'll assume you're already watching Doctor Who and Torchwood.

I'm also a fan of Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles and Jericho, but they go less fun and more dark and dramatic (though they both have their occasional moments of gallows wit).

And I'm sure Chrisisall will be along shortly to suggest Dark Angel.

Hurmm .. just trying to think of additions, how much of the British stuff do you watch? If you're in Ireland then its RTE not BBC, so idk how much you'd get .. if you haven't already seen it I recommend Robin Hood (BBC). Not the most recent series tho, thats kinda crap. The first one is good tho, and to a certain extent the second, too.

If you're into funny comments, check out 'Outnumbered' .. unscripted bliss where the children just come out with the best lines ever.

I say go with CHUCK!

Unless you want sci-fi action- then I'd say Dark Angel.

Much thanks to everyone. I have got some tough decisions to make...
Wakeupsoon, I am a huge fan of the original Robin Hood series. Its one of the many boxsets that have brought me to poverty!

Everyone else, thanks for all the suggestions. I think Chuck, Wonderfalls, and Pushing Daisies seem to be the front runners.

I knew I would get great suggestions here.

[Jedi Mind Trick]

You don't need to see anything but CHUCK or Dark Angel. You can go about your business of purchasing them now. Move along.
