Since Buffy, that is. Seems our 'Doll' is doing quite well for herself, where as SMG has ... been in a couple of Scooby movies.

I think it's because people tend to like the bad boy/girl in a TV show or movie. The renegade is usually more popular than the steady hero.

I do have to say the I recently finally saw Cruel Intentions and thought SMG was incredible in it. The girl has so much talent it's a shame she's not in more. Unless she's being selective or taking time off work.

I don't know if "outshined" is the right word here. To me, SMG wanted to transition from television into movies. It's like going from being a big fish in a freshwater pond into a struggling small fry in a huge salty ocean. Not many can make that transition.

I believe nearly everyone from Buffy (including Eliza), Angel, etc.. have tried with varying degrees of success and ultimately ended back up where they started--on television.

SMG hasn't given up yet, and unfortunately, the roles are just not there for her right now.

Even for Eliza, she's more or less still struggling. And if 'Dollhouse' doesn't do well this season, we might not see her back on series television for another couple of years and probably only in the occasional guest roles on other series and low budget movies.

Plus, I think SMG decided to go "mommy track" for a bit - and she just had another - so that's taken her out of a good bit of work. And it doesn't help that she just can't seem to get the right role. Scooby movies, Southland Tales, The Grudge 1 & 2, a few others... she hasn't been just lounging around counting the money.

Eliza tried a couple movies, too. Step It Up, or Bring It On, or one of those genre "cheerleader-gets-served-and-has-to-win-a-dance-off" kinds of things. But she seems to have stuck mostly with TV. Tru Calling was JUST getting good when it got cancelled, dammit. :(

But I've always found Eliza the hotter of the two...

I always though Alyson Hannigan had the most talent of the three, and she has had the most success.

Total agreement! <3
And yes, Eliza is quite attractive. I liked her more as Faith; she had some meat on her bones. But even with a bit less curve she's still pretty drool-worthy. I can't say the same for SMG. In terms of talent, I think SMG has flawless technique as an actress, but not the same emotional levels Eliza tends to bring. It's kind of a trade-off. Only, for me anyway, it really isn't, because the emotion always wins.

Can't disagree with Aly's awesomeness. I tried "How I Met Your Mother" when it came out, ONLY because of her. I hated the show. But I caught a few eps recently, and thought it was hilarious. Not sure if they got better, but it sure seemed that way. It's now one of my favorite comedies.

I'm just tossing this out, but could SMG be having a tougher time shaking the 'Buffy' image? Be it from a perception issue from the industry, or w/ her own identity and how she's approaching her career. I don't know, and I'm not real sure even if I have a preference of one over the other. Both are smokin' hot and flat out fun to watch.

I don't know... i get where you are coming from b/c of well anyone that's been on a pre- enterprise star trek series. esp the original cast.
but has David Boreanaz have issues tossing the Angel persona/ preception of him when bones started???
I'm honestly asking, i've never seen a single episode of Bones.......

when Dr. horrible first hit the web were people going: Why is doogie howser hitting on Codex, and getting beaten up Bill Pardy??
or Since when does Barney have a Secret Lab???

I think Hannigan was not too choosy or stuck up when selecting her movie roles. Her role in American Pie was self-depreciating, and many actresses do not want to do that, particularly those who consider themselves "stars".
I think she really did well that way.
SMG has always struck me as too glossy, shallow. Sorry if that bothers you.

Plus, Alyson has been acting in movies since an early age. Who else remembers her and Seth Green in My Stepmother is an Alien?

I had forgotten Seth was in that movie, but for the longest time, I always remembered her. Odd as it may seem, I thought her acting in that movie was ... bad. I could't exactly figure it out, but she seemed to me to be, well, not that she was pretty, but that her acting was simply out of place. For some reason, she stuck out as being an odd choice for that movie. It wasn't until years later, well after I'd seen Buffy, that I put 2 and 2 together and remembered she was " that girl " from that Alien movie.

I'd also like to forget that she was in one of those lame spoof movies. Gawd, those are awful.

THESOMNAMBULIST

Could be the hollywood limelight has lost much of it's mesmerizing glare for Sarah Michel Gellar. Maybe she's more pragmatic about the life/work roles? She's been acting since a very young age. Who knows...

However even if she goes on to do very little else with her career she'll always have Buffy on her CV. And her Buffy is now well an truly one of the all time great female characters, and certainly an iconic one... I'd say that's plenty to be proud of.

Eliza? Well I hope her new found role as a producer might see her to doing great works also. Dollhouse is a good start.

All the best to the both of them I say.

DREAMTROVE

Eliza has been more successful because it's easier to compete in television. Sarah set her sites on film. This isn't a number of people per number of spots, it's that film is what people go into, and tv is what people leave, and to there's always an old guard in film which is difficult to replace. Additionally, film makers are much more concerned about how much of a draw a particular actor will be, and less likely to experiment with an unknown.

Myself, I'd rather be a Summer Glau Tricia Helfer sandwich
