today at work The grade 6 kids were being attitudinal. The school year started last week, so they are still asserting themselves as the new leaders, and acting cool etc etc. I had to get heavy with a couple of them during the afternoon and seperate some from the group. As I was leaving One of the girls said "bye...I'm sorry I was naughty today I hope we're still friends" before I could respond positively her friend said "yeah sorry I swore and stuff I was a total bitch too". Before I could respond to that, one of the boys said "you just swore then when you said Bitch" "yeah but I wasn't swearing then coz I was being a bitch before...if I called someone a bitch that would be swearing but if I'm describing my behaviour its ok (then looking at me) Right?
My response: Uh...no it's always swearing but at least you're thinking about it so that's good.
For once I didnt have a witty comeback. She was so sincere.

That's funny. I'm surprised the girl didn't point out to the boy that by pointing out that her saying "bitch" was a swear word that he in fact was also swearing....

You just reminded me of something that happened years ago.

I was going out with someone a few years back and she had a little boy. He used to get on really well with my nephew and one day the whole gang come visiting me. So the Boy and my Nephew are playing with their bikes around the garden and I say :
"Hey boys remember you can cycle anywhere in the garden but please stay away from the vegetable patch ok?"

I'm sure I hear a couple of OK's so I slope back off into the kitchen and cook some dinner. It was summer so I was preparing things to eat outside. Anyway of course I show up in the garden with dinner ready and what do I see: Yup, both boy's with a bike in the vegetable patch! They look totally busted too!!!

So I say: "Hey I told you to stay out of the vegetable patch didn't I?"

To which my Girlfriends boy says:

"Oh it wasn't us, a monster came and did it!"

"Wha -?" Was all I could get out before the boy continued with:

"Didn't you see him...?"

"...Er...no..." I say totally off guard.

Then

"Pity - he's gone now...."

Wow. If I had sworn or spoken to a teacher that way, my mother would have shoved hot coals down my throat instead of soap I think; the punishment would have been epic. Kinda funny about her thinking 'bitch' as a descripter isn't a swear though XD wtf is up with youngens these days????? It seems like every generation is getting steadily worse behavior-wise (from what I've seen going back to visit the classes coming up after me).

Somnambulist: that's just plain funny, and inventive too, even though he was fibbing. Pulling stuff like that (funny stuff in general, not fibs) always used to get me out of trouble with my mother because if I made her laugh she couldn't punish me

Well, most of the kids I deal with, they're pretty messed up, so they do say some odd things, but one incident in particular comes to mind.

Well, one of them quite a while ago got to asking me why I was so grumpy, and religion entered the conversation at some point, and I told her I didn't really "believe" in anything...

"That's not true, you believe in us."

That almost brought me to leakin from the eyes, it did - in some ways, kids are wiser than we are.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaw! I think I would've started cryin' on the spot right there (especially if I were in a bad mood, I always cry easier when I'm unhappy). How old was the kid?

I usually go with ... it's not always a swear word, but it's not really polite to say around people.

I've got some mini behavior lessons if you want them for the kiddos:)

About 10-11, Freelancer - most of the kids we wind up dealing with, have seen more horror than anyone that age should have, and this girl had wound up on the hands of religious-based mistreatment, which thankfully some more rational members of her extended family put a stop to right off, thankfully.

Some of the worse off ones, they say things that are downright scary, since they see right through all the petty rationalizations and excuses we coat our "reality" with - but it's really a triumph of human spirit to witness how unconquerable their humanity is.

Case in point, Ellie, today..

Me "You don't HAVE to share, I gave one to everybody"

Ellie "Yes I do, not sharing is mean, and mean people get evil, and I dun wanna get evil cause there's no medicine for it!"

Apparently she thinks it's contagious or something...

Not that she ain't got a point, but they say some *really* strange things sometimes.

Aw, no medicine for it.

You know, some people just...some people just shouldn't *be*. -_- people make me mad.

It's nice to know despite it all that they're unconquerable on at least some level (if not every level), though they shouldn't have to flex those muscles at 10 :\

Yeah Kids are great for inventing stuff on the spot. I love hearing kids excuses really. They are so entertaining.

I personally don't think that kids are any worse than when I was a boy. I had freinds/piers who were just plane psychotic when I was at school.

I think the distractions are different now and so it manifests intself in different ways but basically they are equally as cheeky, mischievous, and rebellious as when I was young.

Best cure for swearing though is to not have any swear words at all.
