Hello,

Phasers are ubiquitous in Trek, and a staple of the universe. They also trouble me a great deal.

Never mind the physics that lets you hurl a man and/or disintegrate him without applying force on the shooter. Never mind disintegrating a man without damaging someone standing nearby. I assume all of that is magic science beyond my comprehension.

But almost all small-arm phasers have either nonexistent or appallingly rudimentary sighting systems. What's up with that? Are all Federation officers supposed to be incredibly gifted point-shooters? Sometimes they don't even use the folding prism sight on their rifles. It bothers me.

They also have all manner of exposed triggers sans guards. Just begging for a slip and an accidental shooting.

Anyone else wish the phasers (and other race's weapons) were designed as though someone actually had to use them? Someone who wasn't born Annie Oakley?

The only REAL phasers

(well, you know what I mean) were in TOS. In that series, you stunned someone or you vapourized them. Or made a wall go away. Or cut a chunk off a Horta if you only had phaser 1.

The later phaser weapons were highly advanced & generally more peep-friendly, giving you a burn, or just cutting off an appendage at higher settings.

Phasers were meant to stun, or f**k ALL!!!
And yeah, you had to rated on them. Bad shot? You only get a tricorder, sorry.
