What do people think about this:

For car insurance, women are generally a lower risk to insure than men but will, in due course, have to pay the same premiums.

The British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) said currently the cost of the average car claim by an 18-year old man was £4,400, while that for an 18-year old woman was £2,700.

I'm not sure myself, but in an alternate universe where men were statistically safer drivers it seems inconceivable that insurers would be able to charge women more, based on sex...(here in Europe at least).

It's not personal. It's just war.

The problem with the insurance industry is that they insist on doing things with methods developed in the 1920's. They use industry averages to figure out how much to charge you. That might apply for someone obtaining a type of insurance for the very first time. But I've had car and medical insurance of my own for almost 30 years now. They *could* have built an actuarial table based on my *actual* use of both. I've had homeowner's insurance for over a decade. They could have started charging me for my *actual* claims on my insurance. I'm subsidizing drivers and homeowners who are worse risks than I am. The database would be quite large, but it could be done, now.

The more I get to know people the more I like my dogs.

I think all of insurance, as it exists, is a scam.

Complaining about insurance gender (or other) inequity is like saying, "Thieves should steal equally from both men and women, and not just target women."

Maybe some would expect thieves to have that kind of honor, but uh... I don't.

The only place women are better drivers then men is a place where everybody drives on the wrong side of the road.

I'm with CTS, it's a scam. I'm sure they raised the rates for women under the name of gender equality, rather than lowering them for men.

The ruling kind of missed the point. Insurance charges based on risk factors...and young male drivers are statistically more likely to be involved in a crash than females. When those statistics change, and they probably will, then the premiums will change. That's been the system, like it or not. It's nothing to do with gender equality. If I smoke, my premiums will go up because I'm statistically more likely to need medical intervention.

I agree with Meghan's, it should be based on statistics. Sure it would be fine to reexamine the statistics, but it makes sense to base stuff on quantifiable data. Other than that I don't really care much about this issue, but I can definitely understand why others do.

Isn't gender equality making sure people are not prejudged on anything based on their gender?

And would you be cool with it in the future when men turn out to be more adept and statistically safer at driving our new, hovercars than women - that you'd be charged more by virtue of being a woman?

It's not personal. It's just war.

I never said the insurance industry was fair, in fact it is inherently unfair but that is how the system works. You'd need to replace it wholesale with another kind of system if you want fairness and equality. As it is, it would have to be the most discriminating industry. It discriminates on the basis of health, age, employment, lifestyle choices...you name it. But the way it works is that if you are perceived as low risk, you pay less. Some people like that about the system.

I thought about it some more, maybe it would be good if the rates were equal. Its frustrating for people with health trouble to get private insurance since they get turned down easily, it is unfair. But the only thing is that if everyone is accepted then everyone's rates go up. I have mixed feelings about it.

A private system just wouldn't exist with equality. Insurance companies wish to make money, therefore they want to attract low risk clients with lower rates and deter higher risk clients with higher rates, or refusal to fund. That is why most countries have a public health system, because of the inequities in the private system.
