Just wondering, would you or a Browncoat you know write an original Firefly/Whedonverse article to be posted on FFF.NET for $5?

The reason I'm asking is that occasionally, we have a little fund leftover after the bills are paid for the site. Rather than banking it for the following month, what if we used that extra money to pay for original content for the site?

I know it's not a lot, but based on what I've read recently about content farms, etc., $5 is actually isn't all that bad.

With this month's donation about $50 over what I need, I can pay for 10 original articles.

What do you all think?

'Article' as in what? A critique of the show or movie? An original story?
A personal anecdote concerning swallowing a bug?
An analysis juxtaposed with today's geo-political climate?

Needing specificiousity here...

Not that this is something I could do, but what would the articles be? Reviews of eppisodes and characters and related media? Experiences with other Browncoats or shindigs? What the actors are doing now? Any and all of the above?...

Damn, gotta set my clock back 5 minutes to get ahead of Chris or I could just do that...

Anything Firefly related, which is actually quite broad. But basically the stuffs I normally select as news headlines for the site. Anything having to do with the people who were on Firefly and what they are working on at the moment. Fun stuff like 10 best scenes from Firefly or any of the recent Joss Whedon series or series that the actors are in, which basically covers Castle, V, etc..

Article on the fandom itself. Coverages of Firefly fandom at Cons. Interest pieces on the Browncoats themselves (we have a many interesting Browncoats!).

Anything no more than two degrees of separation from Firefly is probably a good criteria.

If you have experience being a copywriter, this is probably perfect for you.

I guess the goal is to have original content on the site so that instead of us linking to other sites all the time, we can maybe get them to link to us for a change. It'll raise our profile a bit and contributors to the site gets compensated for their work.

Like when I recast WKRP with the crew? Hrm. I bet there are lots of folks around here that could do that.

What's the procedure? Should people write, submit, and then wait for approval like a magazine? Will the mods be involved...are the mods still involved?

I'm just making this stuff up as I go, but I want to make the process somewhat community based. Maybe have a page somewhere on the site where members submit their ideas for an article, members then vote on the article they would like to read, X number of votes give you the okay to write it, when completed, a pass through an editorial board of some kind, they okay it, writer gets paid, article goes live.

It's probably harder than it sounds, but that's the general flow of it at the moment.

I'm up for that. I'm not fussed about the $5 though. Maybe you could just donate it to something or use it as my contribution to the site... But anyway I'll try my hand at writing some content.
I'll offer myself up for any article but I'm probably geared more towards script writing, or story telling.
I'm ok at writing reviews or critiques but It's not my strength...

Hope that helps.

I would happily write an article for $5. Can I write about www.stillflying.net? :)

noticed you have a volunteers section in the info page, I'd be happy to write an piece or two in exchange for a link to my firefly blog. that way, I get free advertising, and you get a free article. win win.

Newbie here. I too would be less interested in the money and more so in the exposure. However, I'm a short story writer.

I know you set some perimeters. I'm just wondering if you are looking for news articles only, or if anything FireFly related that might draw in readership will work?

I just post storys I find on other sites, I may end up having to pay them $5. Besides, all of my articles would be how Summer is the greatest and sexiest actress ever, and that "Warehouse 13" should be canceled....it should be canceled.

Sounds like I'm the only one who thinks this, but I'm used to that sort of thing, I think you might just go ahead and pay for next month's bills, I mean, it never hurts to get ahead. But it sounds like everyone likes this idea, so hop to it if you like. I guess I'm just dull like that, paying bills is good.

I actually agree with you. I would sooner know that the site was financially secure for the next month than use that money and end up short.

To Haken:
Most of the comments above show folks that would be willing to write for free (myself included) so maybe it's just a case of getting article ideas out there and letting folks pick the ones they want to do.
Maybe even make a competition, of sorts, if you want to give money away. We could vote for our favourite articles each month and the first three places get a monetary prize. But keeping some money back for the bills.

Whozit,

Your article should contain lots of pictures and video clips, like outtakes from the Firefly pilot that couldn't be aired on TV because of the excessive nudity.

I like the idea. I'm not much of a writer, but I certainly don't think it's a bad idea to have some more original content around here. I'm not really into the fan-fic type stuff, so articles of the nature you described would be more appealing.

I like that you want some kind of editorial group reviewing them too. Gotta keep it all of a high quality.

If I had any ideas I thought worthwhile, I'd be up for contributing though, $5 reward or not.

Should the site handle the articles the same way it does with the fanfics? Basically, I'll have an area of the site where you can post articles, editorials, reviews, etc. that members can post to. And maybe some sort of voting mechanism to get it onto the news list or maybe a featured article list, etc.?

I don't know about MySpace, that place is going down the drain faster than I can say 'shiny!'

I like the idea both as a reader and a writer. I have a degree in creative writing and a small resume of published works. I'm sure I could come up with quite a few ideas for critical/analytical articles about 'verse related material in the same vein as could be found in "Finding Serenity." I think this would be a great way to drive in readers to the site instead of just having us link to other site's articles and discussions.

I dig the voting idea, too. Maybe there could be a section for writer's ideas and then one for community ideas which would need a second from someone actually interested in writing about said topic before they go to voting.

If you made it a weekly feature then you could call that section of the sight something like The Browncoat Bulletin or the Independence Inquirer.

Sounds like a good idea. I do apologize for being a bit behind in implementing all of this. Just lots of stuff happening in real life in terms of work, family, etc., that just is sort of overwhelming me at the moment.

Having said that, I do have something that I've drawn up on paper that I would like to put into place on the site that is more or less based on how the Amazon Mechanical Turk works.

https://www.mturk.com/mturk/welcome

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Mechanical_Turk

Simply put, the site will generate assignments and interested parties can complete the assignments. Assignments can either be created by members of FFF.NET or auto-generated by the site. In essence, we're crowdsourcing the community here on the site.

I'm not sure if this little experiment will work or not, but I think it's worth trying.

I must be missing th gist of the idea.
Why get paid? Some of us have generated large posts, larger than can fit in one post (I think).

Unless you restrict it, once a format or template of what you want is started, I suspect many of us would voluntarily create "articles" like we create posts.

For sure, if you wanted to use anything I've posted, perhaps edited to a more "articley" style or format, feel free to do so.

To not get cluttered, you could have sub-sections of your Article Area for various themes or genres of subject matter. Like one section for convention reviews and famous meetings - I thought I've already seen much of that, albeit more brief bits. Another section for what actors are doing now, or why they are the best in their craft.

It's not like it's work - we're here because it's a pleasure.

I don't really care about the money either, JewelStaitFan, but I think what we're getting at would be a little more professional (hence money) than just anything we would post in the forum. Editing is part of it and we should probably have at least one other person read any article before it goes up. I teach English and would be happy to do this, as long as it's not too many.

The other part of it, if I understand Haken's intentions, is to create more original content. Most forum posts I see merely link to content created on another site, pose a simple question, or embark upon a rant. Not that I don't enjoy these things, I love this site, we're just looking in a new direction. That said, you're right, I think a lot of users here would like to volunteer to do some writing.

Haken, no worries man, we're all busy. You do more than enough!

I think it sounds a very intriguing idea - there's plenty of people here who could write interesting and original pieces about the show. Perhaps it would be best if people made pitches for article ideas, complete with sample text and then Haken picks as many items that funds will allow.

I'd also suggest broadening it to beyond just writing - if someone has a great idea for a piece of art or even music/video, this would be a great springboard.

definitely liking all these ideas, had another one.
When you click on the INFO link, theirs a side bar on the page that says volunteers or something like that on the left. Haken could use that for featured aAuthors or ones who consistently give good articles, kidda like a top dog thing.
