WISHIMAY

Was wondering if anybody has any unusual things they do or eat that help them get through their day?

I have had...let's call it "intestinal issues" for YEARS and recently found something that is helping me out in ways I never imagined....Yoo-hoo.
Yeah, that "chocolatey" drink that you either love or hate- and I can't imagine why it works(soybeans? phosphorus??). As long as I have one a day things are sooo nice. I have been issue free for 2 months now...a record!

Also, I just found out that my husband has been taking Extenze pills and not for what you might think...for mood. He is subject to bouts of anger, but we have not found anything that helps him control it....and we have tried everything on the market-some made him almost psychotically worse.. Also, he says they don't really help him in the area they were marketed for?! but says they make him feel more level-headed (which I'm allllll for) but I am also worried about health problems in taking it too...

And on a third note...I recently figured out that my daughter has Urticaria...which means she has an allergic reaction to the proteins that float to the skin's surface to protect it from things like frostbite....For years she's had weird rashes with no clear reason, some serious!!! for which the doc kept prescribing anti-biotics with NO EFFORT to find the reason of the rash. Last year I researched it when someone made an off-hand remark about an aunt that had joint seizure when in the cold for more than a minute and found pictures of rashes exactly like my kids'...Ironically, my kid also has allergies and I was trying to treat them homoepathically ('cause who wants to shoot their kid full of drugs if you ain't gotta, right?) and the treatment for urticaria IS ANTI-HYSTAMINES...And no, I haven't run this by a lazy-ass doc..Why? Allegra and a Sweater in the A/C and TA-DAH not a bad rash IN MONTHS!

Sooo, now that you have MY medical history, heh....What do you got?

Oh dear heavens, would you like a LIST?!!

See, I have bizarre biochemistry as an adaptive mechanism - remember the old pre-marriage blood tests, anyone remember WHY they had em ?
Cause at the time if you had incompatible blood types, your second kid was as good as DOA, especially if you were poor, I was in fact kind of supposed to be stillborn, but I was a stubborn jackass from conception, apparently, and my internal chemistry is seriously bonkers to the point of being described as "Hostile" by one doctor, which has recently bit me on the arse quite badly via an autoimmune reaction which landed me in the hospital.

Side result of that, is a list of food allegies and reactions which is quite substantial, and covers everything from mild stomachache to hurling up your socks for ninety minutes - you can imagine I am pretty careful about what I eat, not to mention *extremely* bitter about being told off as finicky, a whiner and a liar as a child - on top of taking enormous amounts of abuse from the school system over poor handwriting, as a result of Dsygraphia/Gerstmann Syndrome, which was one of the primary impulses that flowered into my staunch advocacy of youth issues, given that had I not been ignored and dismissed as a liar and a wimp, these medical issues might have been addressed, instead of left to fester, yanno ?

So yeah, I gotta be careful what I eat, sure - although I do tend to be hedonistic within that range.
I also feel ya about slacker doctors who treat the symptoms instead of cause, that's far, far worse from a psychological aspect, but it occurs in all facets of the patient-doctor interaction, unfortunately.

As for unorthodox stuff, other than some really old-school holstic medicine, let's see here...

Well, if you can find it, sasparilla (soft drink) is in fact useful for a mild headache cause it works in a similar fashion to Aspirin, which itself is derived from Willow Bark.

Strangely enough, despite having resorted to anything and everything in order to deal with toothache, as a result of exposed nerves, which you can imagine is NOT FUN on top of malnutrition and medication reactions, from benzocaine all the way down to shots of moonshine, you know what was most effective ?
Malt Liquor - I kid thee not, if you've ever a toothache, go buy yourself a "Fotay", you'll thank me later.

And there's the old school trick for hay fever, procure locally made honey and consume it, which seems to gently build up natural immunity to local pollen - for preference I dip chicken nuggets in it, but you could have it any way you like so long as you digest it, hell, lick it off your girlfriend for all it matters...

Oh yes, and for PTSD, nerves or monthly female issues like mood swings or cramps, I cannot strongly enough reccommend catnip tea, it happens to be very effective without any of the typical medication side effects, and has many other benefits as well, and beyond the occasional human who sees a mild increase in sex drive, the only downside I know is having to deal with wound up cats who want you to share.

And finally, one trick I learned from an old army sergeant regards how to cope with the near-inevitable results of large antibiotic doses, or really any other way you wind up with the equivalent of a gastrointestinal apocalypse... B-R-A-T regimen.
Bananas-Rice-Apples-Tea
These four things will help regulate the pipes, you might say, and that can come in right handy after a visit to Toxic Hell and the inevitable case of food poisoning that will result.
(No, I do not, will not eat there, but I'll be ever so mockingly helpful for them who do!)

If necessity is the mother of invention, then desperation is surely the father, that's all I got for the moment, but that's also off the top of my head, and it's a loooong bloody list of tricks I got, yeah.

For places where alcohol on the breath might be a problem, chew on a clove ( yanno, one of those little black thorny jobbers you stick in a ham), or tuck it up beside your gum, or in the hole in the tooth, if yers are really bad like mine. You can also get Oil of Clove at a pharmacy or health food place.

DREAMTROVE

I'm with Frem. I'd be here all day. I'm dubious that conventional medicine actually has that many cures up its sleeve compared with old wives and witch doctors.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

Darnit, I keep forgetting to post in the new board, and my posts keep getting et....

Anyway. Catnip?? I didn't know that stuff was edible, but I'll try it out. I'm unfortunately allergic to cats, but I shouldn't be molested by one, hopefully

The Honey I knew about-I use it on just about everything sweet, i loove it wth strawberries or in any pies. Good substitute for sugar...

Yanno ( I like yer yanno word) I truly hate technology most days, But I would gladly drive across the country to see a computerized doc- If they EVER get that going...Instant photo rash recognition software, an accurate risk assessment, detailed pharmacological reccomendation with homeopathics and available gene therapy with costs (I can't keep up with a tenth of that stuff, I don't see how a busy doc could) Leaning software from your feedback-so it just gets BETTER with age...No judgementality or tempers or paper-work mix-ups... They would keep photos of everything for review, from injuries to coloring.... The more I've thought about it the more I'm obsessed with the idea, think what it could do in third world countries!!!

THE DOC-BOT 3000! HOPEFULLY COMING TO AN OFFICE NEAR YOU, BEFORE YOUR DOCTOR KILLS YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!
