Shit. I forgot to type in a title...again! Apologies. Nonetheless...

I absolutely hate to say this, except that it does nothing to mitigate HIS madness, but I can't find anything untrue in the underlined portions of what he said (and a bit more):
Quote:

American diplomats led a walkout at the U.N. General Assembly Thursday as Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad issued a sweeping attack on the United States and major West European nations, calling them "arrogant powers" ruled by greed and eager for military adventurism.

The two U.S. diplomats, who specialize in the Middle East, were followed out of the chamber by diplomats from more than 30 countries. They included the 27 European Union members, Australia, New Zealand, Somalia, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino and Macedonia, a U.N. diplomat said.

Ahmadinejad's speech contrasted what he called the poverty and unhappiness in most countries against the riches and power of the U.S. and unnamed European nations that he accused of perpetuating wars, causing the current global economic crisis and infringing on "the rights and sovereignty of nations."

He attacked the United States and European colonial powers for abducting tens of millions of Africans and making them slaves, for their readiness "to drop thousands of bombs on other countries," and for dominating the U.N. Security Council He singled out the U.S. for using a nuclear bomb against Japan in World War II and imposing and supporting military dictatorships and totalitarian regimes in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

"It is as lucid as daylight that the same slave masters and colonial powers that once instigated the two world wars have caused widespread misery and disorder with far-reaching effects across the globe since then," Ahmadinejad said. "Do these arrogant powers really have the competence and ability to run or govern the world
?"

The Iranian president answered by calling for "the shared and collective management of the world in order to put an end to the present disorders, tyranny and discriminations worldwide." (Personally I believe he's right, but it's not going to happen and may not be POSSIBLE)

Ahmadinejad made no mention of his disputed re-election in June 2009 when Iranian security forces systematically crushed opposition protests, the current internal political turmoil that has sharply diminished his power, or Iran's nuclear program which the U.S. and its allies believe is aimed at producing nuclear weapons.

"While President Ahmadinejad is lecturing the world from the U.N. podium," Human Rights Watch's U.N. Director Philippe Bolopion said, "dissent is still being crushed ruthlessly in Iran and basic rights demanded by millions in the Arab world are brutally denied to Iranians who are demanding the same."

"The world assembly should take with a grain of salt the remarks of a leader who said nothing about the public hanging yesterday of a 17-year-old in his own country," he said.

In his speech, Ahmadinejad noted "the widespread awakening in Islamic lands ... (in) the pursuit of the realization of justice, freedom and the creation of a better tomorrow." He said "our great nation stands ready to join hands with other nations to march on this beautiful path."

The Iranian leader accused the U.S. of threatening to place sanctions on anyone who questions the Holocaust and the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against the United States with sanctions and military action.

Without naming the United States, he asked: "Who imposed, through deceits and hypocrisy, the Zionism and over 60 years of war, homelessness, terror and mass murder on the Palestinian people and on countries in the region?"

Ahmadinejad accused some unidentified European countries of still using the Holocaust "as the excuse to pay fine or ransom to the Zionists." He also said any question about the foundation of Zionism is condemned by the U.S. "as an unforgivable sin."

Mark Kornblau, spokesman for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, said: "Mr. Ahmadinejad had a chance to address his own people's aspirations for freedom and dignity, but instead he again turned to abhorrent anti-Semitic slurs and despicable conspiracy theories."

When the idea of an independent fact-finding investigation of "the hidden elements" involved in the Sept. 11 attacks was raised last year, he said, "my country and myself came under pressure and threat by the government of the United States."

"Instead of assigning a fact-finding team, they killed the main perpetrator and threw his body into the sea," Ahmadinejad said, referring to the U.S. military's killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in early May.

"Would it not have been reasonable to bring to justice and openly to trial the main perpetrator of the incident in order to identify the elements behind the safe space provided for the invading aircraft to attack the twin world trade towers?," he asked.

Luh Suh. Why would anyone waste their time listening to the Iranian president (who I'm pretty sure rigged the elections in 09, and not very convincingly I might add. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I don't understand why anyone cares what the rutter says anyways. Oh well. If his people had actually elected him this time around then I'd have to at least agknowledge him as his country's legitimate leader, meaning he does get to rule that country. But I have no obligation to listen to him. Do you remember when Dateline interviewed him a few years back?

Note that I'm not attacking Niki for posting it, it makes for good discussion fotter, okay, maybe it makes for good me talkin trash fotter. But he is part of the world event scene so its the right place to put him.

You realize that virtually the same argument could be made against Dubya, right?

Still can't imagine why anyone in the world would ever have listened to him, either. They all should've walked out on his idiotic wars.

This thread deserves no title. Paying that little nut job any attention is a waste of time.

So, he brings up slavery, a chapter which this nation put behind us 150 years ago. And paid a heavy cost for it,as well.

He brings up the A bomb, which helped end a war that WE didn't start, over 65 years ago.

This little tyrant wanna-be is simply trashing us, to keep the world looking at his regime's abominable record.

Oh, and claiming the US owns the U.N.Security Council ? That's a joke.

This guy denies the holocaust and claims 9/11 was an inside job. He's flat out mental.

Wow. Haven't been to V.1 in a LONG time--it looks so foreign. Came because I saw there had been responses (I can't click on the thread in v.2). So:

Yes, he's all the things everyone has called him, indisputably. But what about the parts I underlined? While I know Raptor can conceive of no wrong in America (except that there are liberals--or ANYONE who disagrees with him--in it), I happen to think this crazy little man said some true things.

And now I will return to V.2, and hope eventually Haken can tell me how to avoid my repeated mistake of hitting "save" before I remember to put up a title, dammit!

Eh, I think he has a point, and actually I think the whole "he rigged the elections" thing was something western powers incited to try to destabilize that government. Similar attempts and results can be seen in the more recent Arab Spring, with the same principles are at work, and we might be hoping it'll cycle back around to Iran. And it's not like we're exactly innocent of this, our own little mock-dictators we've propped up in the Middle East have rigged elections and we darn well know it (Karzai anyone?).

Back in 2009, we were on an Iran hostility jingoism kick, which because we were trying to hurry up and get a non-Middle-Eastern source of oil in our neighborhood in case war interrupted the global supply, that directly lead to the gulf oil spill (our own damn fault).

But his solution is pretty much bollocks. "The international council is abusive and oppressive! Let's form an international council (that I can be a part of)."

I think the point Byte was trying to make is that *WE* (the U.S., the West) keep claiming that he rigged the elections, but haven't really provided any kind of evidence of said rigging.

And we've got plenty enough of such rigged elections right here at home to worry about, don't we?

Is your point that the U.S. should be in the business of deciding who is in power in every country on Earth? Shall we go around overturning regimes because we think they're being run by "doofuses"?

We claim to support democracy, but we have a damned shoddy record of actually SUPPORTING it when it comes right down to it.

Jewish Iranian president

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad revealed to have Jewish past

Funny, you don't look Jewish? The short note scrawled on the card suggests his family changed its name to Ahmadinejad when they converted to embrace Islam after his birth.

A photograph of the Iranian president holding up his identity card during elections in March 2008 clearly shows his family has Jewish roots.

The Sabourjians traditionally hail from Aradan, Mr Ahmadinejad's birthplace, and the name derives from "weaver of the Sabour", the name for the Jewish Tallit shawl in Persia. The name is even on the list of reserved names for Iranian Jews compiled by Iran's Ministry of the Interior.

Experts last night suggested Mr Ahmadinejad's track record for hate-filled attacks on Jews could be an overcompensation to hide his past.

Ali Nourizadeh, of the Centre for Arab and Iranian Studies, said: "This aspect of Mr Ahmadinejad's background explains a lot about him.

"Every family that converts into a different religion takes a new identity by condemning their old faith.

"By making anti-Israeli statements he is trying to shed any suspicions about his Jewish connections. He feels vulnerable in a radical Shia society."

A London-based expert on Iranian Jewry said that "jian" ending to the name specifically showed the family had been practising Jews.

"He has changed his name for religious reasons, or at least his parents had," said the Iranian-born Jew living in London. "Sabourjian is well known Jewish name in Iran."

A spokesman for the Israeli embassy in London said it would not be drawn on Mr Ahmadinejad's background. "It's not something we'd talk about," said Ron Gidor, a spokesman.

The Iranian leader has not denied his name was changed when his family moved to Tehran in the 1950s. But he has never revealed what it was change from or directly addressed the reason for the switch.

Relatives have previously said a mixture of religious reasons and economic pressures forced his blacksmith father Ahmad to change when Mr Ahmadinejad was aged four.

The Iranian president grew up to be a qualified engineer with a doctorate in traffic management. He served in the Revolutionary Guards militia before going on to make his name in hardline politics in the capital.

During this year's presidential debate on television he was goaded to admit that his name had changed but he ignored the jibe.

However Mehdi Khazali, an internet blogger, who called for an investigation of Mr Ahmadinejad's roots was arrested this summer.

Mr Ahmadinejad has regularly levelled bitter criticism at Israel, questioned its right to exist and denied the Holocaust. British diplomats walked out of a UN meeting last month after the Iranian president denounced Israel's 'genocide, barbarism and racism.'

Benjamin Netanyahu made an impassioned denunciation of the Iranian leader at the same UN summit. "Yesterday, the man who calls the Holocaust a lie spoke from this podium," he said. "A mere six decades after the Holocaust, you give legitimacy to a man who denies the murder of six million Jews while promising to wipe out the State of Israel, the State of the Jews. What a disgrace. What a mockery of the charter of the United Nations."

Mr Ahmadinejad has been consistently outspoken about the Nazi attempt to wipe out the Jewish race. "They have created a myth today that they call the massacre of Jews and they consider it a principle above God, religions and the prophets," he declared at a conference on the holocaust staged in Tehran in 2006.

Rev. Billy Graham openly voiced a belief that Jews control the American media, calling it a "stranglehold" during a 1972 conversation with President Richard Nixon, according to a tape of the Oval Office meeting released Thursday by the National Archives.

"This stranglehold has got to be broken or the country's going down the drain," the nation's best-known preacher declared as he agreed with a stream of bigoted Nixon comments about Jews and their perceived influence in American life.

"You believe that?" Nixon says after the "stranglehold" comment.

"Yes, sir," Graham says.

"Oh, boy," replies Nixon. "So do I. I can't ever say that but I believe it."

"No, but if you get elected a second time, then we might be able to do something," Graham replies.

Later, Graham mentions that he has friends in the media who are Jewish, saying they "swarm around me and are friendly to me." But, he confides to Nixon, "They don't know how I really feel about what they're doing to this country."

The newly released tapes cover the first six months of 1972, with the Vietnam War and the upcoming presidential campaign the backdrops for many conversations. The tapes touch subjects as varied as using a nuclear bomb on North Vietnam--a notion quickly derided by adviser Henry Kissinger--and settling a West Coast dock strike.

They also include all of the famous "smoking gun" conversation about the Watergate break-in, known for its damaging disclosures about a cover-up and its 181/2-minute gap.

The Nixon-Graham remarks came during a 90-minute session after a prayer breakfast the men attended on Feb. 1, 1972.

Scholars Surprised

"I find this rather stunning," said William Martin, a professor of religion and sociology at Rice University in Houston and author of "A Prophet With Honor: The Billy Graham Story."

"This is out of character with anything else I have heard Billy Graham say or be quoted as saying. It is disappointing," Martin said.

"What Graham said that day is inexcusable. Did it ever occur to him that he should have countered the president?" said Martin Marty, a religious historian at the University of Chicago who noted the distinction some conservative evangelicals and Pentecostals have made between supporting Israel but not American Jews.

"One really did not associate him with this," said Michael Kotzin, a vice president at the Jewish United Fund in Chicago. "Rather than try to direct Nixon in a different direction, he reinforces him and eggs him on when it came to these stereotypes, and that's troubling."

Graham, 83, is not in good health and indicated, through spokesman Larry Ross, that he could not respond because he did not recall the conversation.

Thursday's release of 426 hours brings to about 2,600, out of a total of 3,700, the hours of recordings either publicly disclosed or returned to the Nixon family because they were deemed strictly personal. Many recordings, including the Graham tape, are edited to exclude content believed to disclose national security information, constitute a clearly unwarranted invasion of privacy or reveal trade secrets, among other matters.

Previous tapes have underscored the complexity of Nixon, including his insecurity and occasional nastiness. Apologists tend to cite his fits of bigotry as ancillary to his policy achievements, with the Nixon estate claiming that his harshness was often a display of faux machismo in the presence of H.R. Haldeman or his other top aide, John Erlichman.

While other prominent figures, such as Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, then a Nixon aide, can also be heard on tapes during mean-spirited discourses by Nixon, many assumed a more passive role. Graham is unusual for being a distinguished outsider actively taking part.

Longtime Friendship

Graham and Nixon had become close friends during the Eisenhower administration, when Nixon was vice president. The friendship remained strong until Nixon was brought down by the Watergate scandal and resigned the presidency in August 1974.

Haldeman's diaries noted the conversation. He wrote that there was discussion "of the terrible problem arising from the total Jewish domination of the media, and agreement that this was something that would have to be dealt with."

He continues, "Graham has the strong feeling that the Bible says there are satanic Jews and there's where our problem arises." No such comments about the Bible are found on the tape released Thursday but, because it contains several long deletions, it's believed such remarks were excised.

The lengthy chat opens with Graham praising Nixon's prayer breakfast remarks. "There were a lot of people in tears when you finished this morning and it's very moving. That's the best I've heard you at one of those breakfast things."

After offering Nixon tips on preparing himself for big speeches, as well as strategy for his re-election campaign, Graham notes that he has been invited to lunch with editors of Time magazine. "I was quite amazed since this is the first time I've heard from Time since [Time founder] Henry Luce died."

"You meet with all their editors, you better take your Jewish beanie," Haldeman says.

Graham laughs. "Is that right? I don't know any of them now."

Hollywood and the Media

Nixon then broaches a subject about which "we can't talk about it publicly," namely Jewish influence in Hollywood and the media. He cites Paul Keyes, a political conservative who is executive producer of the NBC hit, "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In," as telling him that "11 of the 12 writers are Jewish."

"That right?" says Graham, prompting Nixon to claim that Life magazine, Newsweek, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and others, are "totally dominated by the Jews." He calls network TV anchors Howard K. Smith, David Brinkley and Walter Cronkite "front men who may not be of that persuasion," but that their writers are "95 percent Jewish."

Nixon demurs that this does not mean "that all the Jews are bad" but that most are left-wing radicals who want "peace at any price except where support for Israel is concerned. The best Jews are actually the Israeli Jews."

"That's right," agrees Graham, who later concurs with a Nixon assertion that a "powerful bloc" of Jews confronts Nixon in the media. "And they're the ones putting out the pornographic stuff," Graham adds. Nixon contends that "every Democratic candidate will owe his election to Jewish people," but he won't. Haldeman turns the subject to the White House press corps and the Gridiron Club, a bastion of the media establishment, both of which they say were mostly WASP once, but no more.

"It was the Merriman Smiths, the Dick Wilsons, the [James] Kilpatricks, all that kind of people. But you look at what covers the president today and it's really kind of scary," Haldeman says. Haldeman and Nixon cite by name reporters from the Los Angeles Times (David Kraslow), New York Times (Max Frankel), Washington Post (Stanley Karnow) and NBC (Herb Kaplow) but stumble on CBS.

"From CBS, Rather, Dan Rather, is Rather?" says Haldeman. A deletion then follows with the next voice heard being that of Graham, who alludes to A.M. Rosenthal, managing editor of The New York Times.

"But I have to lean a little bit, you know. I go and see friend of Mr. Rosenthal at The New York Times, and people of that sort. And all, I don't mean all the Jews, but a lot of the Jews are great friends of mine. They swarm around me and are friendly to me. Because they know I am friendly to Israel and so forth. They don't know how I really feel about what they're doing to this country."

Nixon says, "You must not let them know."

The conversation turns to religious magazines, postal rates and Nixon's uncharitable thoughts on certain Cabinet members. Graham then leaves and, a few minutes later, Nixon tells Haldeman, "You know it was good we got this point about the Jews across."

"It's a shocking point," says Haldeman, a frequent cheerleader during Nixon's diatribes.

"Well," says Nixon, "it's also, the Jews are irreligious, atheistic, immoral bunch of bastards."

I never said it was time for us to invade and depose him. I was just trying to understand where Byte was coming from in what she said. I'm not saying its impossible, just trying to understand what she means and doesn't mean.

Well if he didn't rig it then it appears that, whether we like it or not, his people chose him so we need to live with that. But I don't understand why he gets as much attention as he does in our media, he's sort of an attention whore, either that or somehow our media can't get enough of him for whatever reason. Again, remember that Dateline interview? No one else seems to remember it. That's probably a good thing though.

We have our own war mongers here essentially, and they're just as bad as warmongers anywhere else.

But in more detail, there's a few reasons why Iran interests us.

It has actually very little to do with the theocratic influence in the Iranian government, as in practice there's precious little difference between the Ayatollahs and our own life-time appointed Supreme Court Justices, or the basis of much of US law on western (Christian) ideas.

Iran isn't a backwards nation - they have a large percentage of college graduates and engineers. They're actually attempting to build some nuclear power plants over there, which scares Israel because Israel thinks that they'll use the waste from the power plants to refine some weapons grade radioactive material. But it's really kinda like someone making a leather holster, and someone else thinking because they're making a leather holster, they're going to go on a killing spree with a gun. Maybe they'll get a gun, maybe they won't, you can't say either way just from looking at the holster.

Israel also wants to create something like a Middle Eastern version of the European Union (They call it MEFTA), with the Israeli currency as the regional standard. Iran has refused to sign the agreement, as there wouldn't be much profit in it for them, because they have lots of oil. So Iran is one of the few remaining nations in the region that hasn't done so. Two other nations that didn't sign, that now have: Iraq and Afghanistan.

So Israel wants us to invade Iran, as does the WTO and the IMF.

Kuwait also doesn't like Iran, because of what happened in the Gulf War, so they're pressuring us to go after Iran too.

Ahmedinijad is kind of an idiot because he's just drawing more attention to himself and giving all the other nations an excuse. But snipping out all the anti-Jew stuff and the holocaust-denying, he's got a point about the way the western powers and Israel have been behaving towards Iran. Why would he want to cooperate with us when we treat the Arabic nations of the middle east like a pie to divide up?

America has been kind of hoping for a bloodless takeover in Iran so we'll have a friendly government to do what we want. We didn't rig the election, but we could have started accusing him of rigging the election through plants and spies in the area to destabilize or de-legitimize the regime. Actually going to war with Iran would be a little nerve wracking, because there's a good chance that some of the big nations with big developed militaries like Turkey and Egypt would jump sides and help Iran against us. But that doesn't stop people from trying to build up support for ANOTHER war over there, such as Joe Lieberman, pulling an Iraq and claiming that Iran is aiding and abetting Al Qaeda. They're entirely different religious sects of Islam people!

Since we have that vested interest, you can see why I'm suspicious about both the previous claims of a rigged election and the revolutions we've seen the last year around the region.

Not that all the posts are WORTH respond to, but that goes without saying...

And by adding that one line, you're doing it anyways.

A Byte a chara,
I know why America pays attention to Iran, all those things you said make sense and I've seen them to be true as well, though I'm pretty sure they already have nuclear. I just think if we pay too much attention to the Iranian president himself it just makes him more likely to act like that because he's an attention seeker and he seems to do or say whatever he needs to in order to get attention. The more attention we give him specifically the more he'll bug us and seek more attention. That's what I think.

Psychic? That sounds like science fiction !

Actually, the word is 'observant '. You've only said that same thing, to me and to others, ABOUT me, a few dozen times.

Why do we even bother to respond to his posts ? We should just ignore him, until he goes away....

Blah blah blah. If only I were so lucky.

Except the Israel part. And the fact that I called him Immadinnerjacket, which is truly the only way I come close to remembering his name. Other than that? Yeah, that WOULD be a fine pro-Dinnerjacket speech, wouldn't it?

Yanno, Geezer, we've been many rounds on this, I have brought pages and pages of history of our invasions, interventions, and state-sponsored slaughters. SO: Are there any other nations that you know of with 900 military installations around the world? Can you name for us any other nation which spends a tenth of what WE spend on "defense"? Can you add up nations which would at least equal our spending? Starting with Russia and China and working your way down from there? Feel free to go to Nationmaster. In fact, I urge you to.

But since you won't, you'll bring to the table innuendo. Ad hominem. Straw men. You can't possibly refute what I say, so you just lob manure. Careful, son, you're getting dirty.

OH, BTW- Immadinnerjacket doesn't rule Iran, the Supreme Council (of Clerics) does. Immadinnerjacket is allowed to stay in power only as long as he doesn't interfere with the Supreme Council's thoroughly awful corruption.

FREMDFIRMA

Man, this is tame compared to some of the speeches Quadafi hoisted upon us...

Thing is, well, obviously these bastards know quite a bit about hypocrisy, corruption and chicanery, and frankly, that they're dickheads BY NO MEANS makes their calling out of us any less factual.

So instead of trying to shut them up, maybe we should quit giving them the rope to hang us with - but no, as is typical of american nature, shown handily by the first response to folks taping cops misbehavior is to outlaw the taping, rather than address that misbehavior - and so our first response is to try to shut them up, which makes us look even guiltier than we are.

And we *ARE* guilty, make no mistake about it, we've ourselves committed far more henious crimes than most of the bastards we call evil, and frankly we trained and supported a damn lot of em, from OBL to Saddam to School of the Americas or whatever we call out puppet dictator training school now, we're every bit as corrupt, every bit as guilty.

And shutting them up won't change that.

Not any more. If you consider the Soviet installations in their "client states", there probably were more in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Also, you have to consider that many bases in Europe are in support of our NATO treaty obligations, which the Europeans would hold us to. Pretty much the same in Asia.

Then again, the 900 installations is only valid if you consider a couple of officers and NCOs and a few enlisted men an "installation". Like the 42 troops in Kenya, the 95 in the Philippines, the 5 in New Zealand, 12 in Sweden, etc. And, my gosh, 3 on St. Helena.

ETA: also have to consider that money spent on the military isn't the only measure. The U.S. tends to spend on expensive high tech stuff to insure, or at least improve, survivability of our fighting men. Russia and China are perfectly willing to lose massive numbers of troops armed with cheap basic weapons to achieve their objectives. Consider the Eastern Front in WWII or the Korean War as examples of this.
