Quote:UPDATE: 6:44 p.m.: Demonstrators in an anti-war and anti-corporate greed protest in downtown Washington have accepted an offer from the National Park Service to extend their permit by four months. The offer was made and accepted Monday evening. The protesters, who have spent the past four days camping in the city's Freedom Plaza near the White House, say they are discussing the offer. October 2011/Stop the Machine has scheduled other marches and rallies throughout the week. Its permit had been set to expire on Monday and organizers said they had planned to stay put anyway. The group began camping in Freedom Plaza on Thursday, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the start of the war in Afghanistan on Friday. The National Park Service is responsible for issuing permits to groups who hold events in Freedom Plaza. If groups operate beyond their permit, the U.S. Park Police is responsible for removing the group from the the plaza.
