Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I disagree with this editorial, the school administrators, and the judge who ruled on this case.

Free speech is in no way related to preventing a tense atmosphere. It must not be abridged simply because people are afraid that violence might develop.

Speech is often provocative. In fact, that is often the point. We have thousands of people protesting banks and corporations while standing on or around Wall Street. That act is both provocative and contributing to a tense, charged atmosphere.

Schools are a place of learning, and the lesson being taught in this case is not a good one for our children.

To whit: Your freedom of speech shall be terminated whenever the powers that be become afraid.

Instead of terminating freedom of speech, the school would better serve the interests of children if they enforced such freedoms for all.

Might someone, offended by the speech, become violent?

Of course. But such people must not define the freedoms of the rest of us.

Right on, and sorry I'm harping on one thing today, but that's exactly what's being done to OWS, too, not to mention portrying it negativel and cherry picking what stories to report.

Not really. Unless you're talking about learning how to obey and conform.

But it is consistent with the motto of modern pedagogy: "Security Above Freedom, Always."

That's dumb, I had a beaded flag pin and a couple of shirts with flags on them, just for fun and patriotism, I don't see the big to-do. Grow up school admins.

Well see, that's the problem here.

They'd RATHER ban the american flag, than be forced to accept displays of OTHER banners as well, such as the black banner, for example.

Just the usual hypocrisy from the same folk who often enough, and recently enough, demanded recitation of the McCarthyist-modified "Pledge of Allegiance" under threat of force...

I am still of the mind that dress codes and uniform policies are a throwback to Sumptuary Law, exposing the nascent feudalism of our social system and how we treat youth as subhuman.

Mind you, I've never been one to not snark at someone elses threads, although according to my niece and her friends I've little room to bitch...
But your right to wear what you please no matter how ludicrous, is something I'll always defend.
That was especially offensive when Flint sheriff Dicks tried banning baggy pants, which caused all amount of blowback up here.

I should think that the only clothing that would be banned at school (high school at least) would be shirts that say nasty things about other ethnicities or blatently mean stuff like "I hate Fags" or "Muslims are Stupid" or such things. Also if someone is wearing something that exposes all their parts then they ought to go home and change, no one needs to see someone's butt crack or almost-nipples at school.

I'm totally anti uniforms, they're weird and make everyone look the same, which is realllllly confusing for me, so I'm opposed to it.
