Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I expect to see more of these. Editorials suggesting that cutting the defense budget is dangerous and potentially disastrous. This editorial uses WW2 as an example.

During WW2, the unprepared powers of the US, UK, and USSR were faced with unexpected wars.

They all rebounded from early losses and trounced the enemy thoroughly, ramping up production throughout the war.

It's not a cautionary tale, unless you're a would-be dictator thirsting for power. Then you might want to think twice.

I think that exceeding the military expenditure of the largest nation on Earth is good enough. I consider this type of editorial to be a fear-mongering propaganda piece.

Especially since, when any defense cuts ARE implemented, they have a distinct tendency to come out of the VA's end of the budget, not the procurement/readiness side of things.

Yep - how many more billions do we need to spend so our people can have a little some steel on the bottom of their humvees to protect from IEDs? 900? It's sooooooo broken.

Indeed. It would have been so much easier and quicker to do that as soon as they realized what kind of insurgency we were facing, rather than let these soldiers keep getting blown up and severely injured and horribly disfigured, at which point we now have a lifelong commitment to taking care of them, doing medical and mental care, rehab, etc. - all because we sent them into battle with overpriced yet still inferior equipment.

And of course, rather than face any of these issues or problems, we as a nation decided it was just easier to put a big sticker/magnet on our cars that says "Support the Troops!"

Why spend money taking care of people you have already used up and spit out? Not when there are so many defense contractors waiting to give you a kickback.

CTS is right on point. And yes, that seems to be the mentality--always has been, I believe, with the pawns injured in battle. Waiting for the next debacle about the state of VA hospitals; somehow I doubt there has been much improvement...but then I'm a cynic about the military, so don't mind me.

And yeah, an awful lot of our "military budget" goes in the wrong direction, while skimping on those very same pawns. Remember the armor mess? I don't think those the generals enjoy sending off to die have ever gotten much attention when they come back injured, any time in history or any country. The difference is for us, at this time, we have those bloody contractors to fall back on. I know other times mercenaries have been used, but, well, I won't go down that road. I try to astain from getting totally obscene on this place, so best not...

I'm not okay with cutting VA benefits. I'm not okay with skimping on safety related concerns for warriors and their equipment.
