Oh, dear, Magons...hope you're nowhere near that area:

Soaring temperatures and strong winds have combined to create a "catastrophic" fire threat across the southeast Australian state of New South Wales.

Residents have been warned to remain vigilant as temperatures rise towards a predicted high of 43 degrees (109 degrees Fahrenheit) in the state capital of Sydney.

In some areas of the state, winds of more than 70 kilometers an hour (43 mph) were threatening to fan the flames of fires already burning. However, a change in wind direction had caused temperatures in certain parts of the state to fall, offering some relief.

A "catastrophic" fire risk has been declared in four areas of NSW, although the risk across 90% of the state is "severe" or above. A "catastrophic" warning carries the risk of significant loss of life and the destruction of many homes, according to the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS).

"I cannot say it more plainly: the risk is real and potentially deadly. People need to act now," the service's Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said.More at http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/07/world/asia/australia-heat-fires/index.ht

I would say something about global warming changing atmospheres in places, but that might just start another battle. I seem to remember this kind of situation existing in the recent past, as well. Whatever's causing it, it's awfully sad...

I know you're not in Sidney Magon's, but do stay safe just in case. I have a vague idea of where you are, you've told me, but geographically I'm not sure how close it is to the affected area, but I know its not all the way across or anything, so I think you're a little close.

I see the heat is still going on...maybe even WORSE!

It’s Now So Hot in Australia that Gasoline Evaporates Before You Can Pump It

Australia is off the charts right now, and not in a good way. The country is literally on fire, as average temperatures have remained well above 100° F for six straight days and wildfires have engulfed more than 120 homes.

In fact, “red hot” doesn’t even begin to cover it. Temperatures are so high that Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology has added new colors to its weather forecasting chart to represent the record-breaking heat. The fiery new hues, a smoldering purple and a searing violet, indicate a peak temperature of 54° C — or 129.2 degrees Fahrenheit.

Australia's Bureau of Meteorology added new colors to its weather forecasting chart to represent record-breaking heat Tuesday

The country’s all-time record of 123.26 degrees Fahrenheit was set in 1960 at the Oodnadatta Airport in Southern Australia, but it’s already so hot that people can’t even pump gas. Nikki Staskiewicz and Angela Blomeley were stranded in Oodnadatta — which bills itself as “the driest town [in] the driest state of the driest country” in the world — when they tried to fill up their tank, only to find the fuel vaporizing in the triple-digit heat.Read more: http://newsfeed.time.com/2013/01/09/australia-too-hot-to-pump-gas-need

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

I think Magons is in Queensland, so more towards the north, seem to recall her mentioning Brisbane.

Yeah, it does look bad. We're having unseasonably cold weather here, they're having unseasonably warm weather with brush fires.

Oh erk, we had a serious fire at one of the Apartment Complexes near here started by a cooking incident, thankfully no casualties and as usual the local fire departments were effective and awesome in their response, they make a second rescue trip to get the pets out, which was cool of them - one of them had another hang him upside down through the window of a burning apartment to yoink a kitty out from under a desk, even.

Of course I got a bunch of calls from folk who thought it might have been this place, which was heartening, but I WAS trying to sleep...

Oh missed all this.

Thank you for thinking of me, fellow FFFers. I'm down south near Melbourne, and we are getting normal Jan weather which is intermittently hot, but nothing out of the ordinary.

A few spot fires yesterday nearby, nothing serious.

Jan/Feb are the hottest months in many states, and if conditions pre exist - the worst months for bushfires.

If you want to visit the southern states, I'd recommend March and April.

Wildfires are scary, cause they're just so unpredictable and less containable, I think.

Update on the Apartment fire, just for warm fuzzies.

Our local fire guys are awesome, all of em.
No casualties and the Red Cross, as well as some locals, have been rendering aid to those displaced.
We've also been going over fire response plans with our sister companies, although our main responsibility is of course getting everyone (and pets, if we can) OUT of the building as quickly as possible.

Ick, Magons! It's their having to create NEW COLORS in order to record the heat that absolutely blew me away.

But of course, there's no global warming... Do you think when we have to create new colors here in the states, they'll start believing?

Nah, probably not...

I knew Magon's was in/near Melbourne because of our On the Beach discussion (the story happens in Melbourne), I just wasn't sure how close it was to the effected area, I knew it was south of Sidney because of the progression of radiation in the book/movie, but I wasn't sure how far.

Frem I'm glad you guys have a great fire department (I reckon most places do really, but great to hear about yours).

Indeed, I am doubly glad today as there was another apartment fire over in Ann Arbor, and again they managed a zero-casualty rescue, including having to pull off and dispatch from that site an EMT unit to handle a heart attack victim nearby, who pulled through.

Like airline pilots, firefighters are natural heros, it's who they are.

Wow. Wow, Magons...that Haboob is AMAZING! I've never seen anything like that--what does the white "cloud" on top consist of? We had "shamalls" in Afghanistan, same basic thing as the dust cloud part, but we never saw them of course, being locked safely away. But that what stuff...that's wild, I've never seen anything like that!

Yeah, the fire stuff is familiar, except we've never had anything close to what yours look like from space! About four times more than the biggest we've ever had, as far as I know. How horribly sad! I hope the weather cools at least enough to help the firefighters, and that the fires stop asap. My heart breaks for the sheep and other livestock...

And of course my heart breaks for that poor Amy Python, too. Must have died when they reached high elevations, poor baby. The passengers thought THEY were shocked, imnagine how the poor Amy felt! I heard something like that...they were calling it "Snake on a Plane, Almost". I couldn't watch.
