It's a good thought, but if you look close at the picture, the dark sheen of soft partially melted tar is visible down that entire stretch of road, with damage to the road surface caused by vehicle traffic stripping the top layer off visible at the front as well as another spot further down. A vehicle fire would only have that in one place. I am not sure how or why the plants are surviving those temperatures. Some of the grass seems affected, but the trees don't. My best explanation for that would be that several kinds of pine trees in the west have adapted to be resistant to high temperatures due to forest fires. The bark of the tree gets singed, but that only causes the pinecones of the tree to pop and crack open, releasing the seeds. The trees actually can no longer reproduce without fire. Perhaps this feature also imbues them with some resistance to constant geothermal heat from the ground they're growing in.

Quote:I sort of wondered if it is just a poor asphalt mix and the oil and aggregate are separating (which can happen at low temperatures if the mix is wrong) and vehicles are tracking it down the road.
