I don't recall hearing about this, or at least as a Sci-Fi film.

Various identifiers claim it was released on 7 April or 21 April.

Anybody heard of it? Seen it? The descriptions made me think of Arrival, but that would be too much to hope for.

Don't feel bad JSF, it just came on my radar too. It's sort of sci-fi, rom-com indy film. Some may call it a sleeper hit. Here's a description:

Gloria is an out-of-work girl who, after getting kicked out of her apartment by her boyfriend, is forced to leave her life in New York and move back to her hometown. When news reports surface that a giant creature is destroying Seoul, South Korea, Gloria gradually comes to the realization that she is somehow connected to this far-off phenomenon. As events begin to spin out of control, Gloria must determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world.

That pretty much sums it up. With Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudekis.

It is now on my list.

Took a date to see it on Saturday, here is my take (without giving away too much).

I loved it. Quirky, funny and offbeat come to mind. A sci-fi rom-com film with a flair for the dramatic, that is hilarious and delivers a twist a la mode. It is as described, but so much more. I place it right there with such off-beat fare as 10 Cloverfield Lane, Silver Linings Playbook or Knocked Up. But this one has a twist that you won't see coming. It tilts the rom-com on it's ear and makes no excuses for taking that sideways turn. Does it dazzle the senses? No. Is it "deep"? It could be, depending how you accept it and pay attention to detail. But like those films mentioned above, it tickles your funny bone and your intellect at the same time. You laugh and think...what a funky concept!

Nacho Vigalondo (sounds like a Mexican delicacy) is the director, who also wrote the screenplay...

Quote:

Ignacio "Nacho" Vigalondo is a Spanish filmmaker. In addition to receiving an Academy Award nomination and a Best Short Film Award nomination at the European Film Awards, Vigalondo's 2003 short film 7:35 de la Mañana received the Bronze Moon of Valencia at the Cinema Jove – Valencia International Film Festival and the Prix UIP Drama at the Drama Short Film Festival.

I love his sick sense of humor and penchant for hilarious scenarios. He could very well be the Spanish Joss Whedon. If you can go see this film, or if you can't, make sure to put it on your "must see" list when it eventually lands on Netflix.

P.S. I'm not sure if this is Vigalondo's first foray into American film. I'm still researching who this guy is.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Did you need to go to an artsy theater, or was it at regular cinema?

OK, looks like this, The Circle, and The Promise are all showing at my theater.

I enjoyed it. A bit quirky, but still able to recommend to Sci-Fi fans. It felt like an extra long episode of Twilight Zone.

Although the final was fairly obvious soon after the problems started, how it played out was still up for grabs.

I think somebody other than Sudeikis would have been better. A less glamorous role than Hatheway oft plays, but satisfying.

My biggest complaint would be the darkness of the news shots on the TVs. For this reason I might prefer seeing it on DVD, with freeze frame and such available.

That's what I loved about it, it's quirkiness. It took sci-fi and rom-com, through it in a blender and this is what came out. I agree, to some degree, about the ending
it was a bit predictable

especially when she arrived in Seoul.

But all along I thought that Sudekis' character was heading toward the typical rom-com ending.
But the ride along the way was fun.

Sudekis, I thought was fine, but a more experienced actor probably would have worked out better. Hathaway was a pure gem in this role, she played it pitch perfect IMHO. I think that the cinematography was a bit off, but it seemed to add to the film's quirkiness and offbeat presentation. Now I want to see the director's other films.

Would you mind putting your comment about the ending in spoiler hiding?

I thought

she would have to go to Seoul around the time Jason's robot went back drunk and without her, with the cokehead. Then it was confirmed when she remembered how it started in her childhood, how she was the one generating the force.
