Seriously, no I'm not passing judgement.
The only reason I haven't watched it is because I have to pay for the CBS streaming service.
I already have Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Hulu.
No, I am not going to get another one just for one show.*

I was just kidding when I said The Orville is better Trek.
I find it funny lots of people are saying that along with bashing Discovery.
I don't quite understand the hatred for the shows coming from the opposite sides.
I figured everyone would be happy that we have TWO shows we can watch.

*I will eventually become a hypocrite with that since I fully intend to join Stargate's service when their new show comes out.

Stargate: Origins will be a prequel covering the time from when the Stargate was dug up in Egypt up to the original movie.
It'll be 10 ten minute episodes on the Stargate streaming site. Whoo-boo. Eh, it's something.

Not sure how the "spore drive" Discovery employs fits in with the canon. I don't recall ever hearing about it before. Interesting to see if it can be tied successfully into the Trek verse we know. Perhaps it will be a discarded form of propulsion, too damaging to lifeforms maybe?

Still, Its not hard to imagine a different timeline.

I haven't seen it I have to admit. I have followed the press on the show since it's inception though. Until I see it, ( a long way off ), my opinion is that the wrong people are behind this latest star trek project.

I consider myself a discerning sci-fi aficionado and my opinion after having watched the show is that its the best sci-fi on TV for a while now.

Its little wonder the good shows get cancelled when people give negative reviews / opinions without even watching it. Does that make sense to you?

No offense, but I like how you sort of validated your opinion by saying in your opinion you're an aficionado. "In my opinion my opinions are really good opinions". Just sounds funny.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. And to be fair it was qualified with explaining how much information it was based on. That allows the reader to determine how much weight to give the opinion.

I also haven't watched the show but everything I've read about it makes me think it's garbage. Sure they might be polishing that garbage really well, but if the base is garbage I know that personally I won't like it. I don't care how well the actors portray their characters or how well each episode is formed. If the base plot the story revolves around is, in my opinion, stupid then I'm never going to accept anything else built on top of it.

Go back to my first post where I said nothing about this appeals to me. The casting nor the story line as presented in the trailers. The hype around this has been extensive and everything they presented as teasers or to promote the show turned me off. What is it about that that you don't understand?

What's the point of even having a franchise series if things aren't held as canon at all ? Adding to the established story is one thing, but changing it up ,imo, is just ripping off the work of others and using it for your own.

I've not seen it. I don't Roku and have no interest in signing up and watching another series online, so I doubt I'll ever see it.

Firefly can't get but 1 season and 1 movie, but slap Star Trek or Star Wars on damn near anything, and it's off to production, spare no expense.

I'm still not convinced the series cant adhere to canon in some way. I've some theories as to how that could play out. Just because we never heard of some things happening in this early time period doesn't mean they didn't happen.

There are ways to watch without signing up. you might be pleasantly surprised enough to then sign up and pay up for some quality sci-fi goodness.

Enough people with preconceived notions of how shit it looked couldnt be assed to give Firefly a go when it first aired. if only more people dipped their toes in the metaphorical waters of Firefly it mighta had a chance.

I want to hear from people who have actually watched Star Trek Discovery.

The context is that they put the show up behind a paywall, so there are lots of internet haters who haven't seen the show and think its some sort of alt-left white-males-bad minority-women-good propaganda piece.

In reality, its no more "liberal" than any other Star Trek series. What it is is darker, more violent/gory and more morally ambiguous than previous Trek. All of the characters (regardless of colour/gender/sexuality) have flaws, conflicts and (usually) blood on their hands... which you'd pretty much expect in the modern TV context post- Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones etc.

As for the Klingons, you could see them as Trump supporters (with their "remain Klingon" battle cry), or you could see them as ISIS or you could sympathise and see them as "knobbly-foreheaded lives matter" (our hero does manage to kill the first Klingon she meets and then advocates a pre-emptive strike against the Klingon flagship). Or, you could see them as a fictitious alien race into which the writers have deliberately thrown bits of all three to make you think.

As for the "spore drive" - it is clearly all going to go horribly wrong and become the Federation's "Miranda" - and as the Discovery is a Black Ops ship it could be covered up with extreme prejudice before Kirk and Picard come along. That's without the "spoilers" (and the big hint at the end of this week's episode) about something weirder going on.

I don't see how bringing the mirror universe into it is going to help preserve canon, though: Enterprise has already established that the "mirror" Starfleet was a camp fascist dystopia from the get-go.

Especially on a proprietary streaming service? I had intended to subscribe when the full season was out so I can binge it, but I don't think I'll be doing that anymore, just on principle.

I have heard the later episodes are better, but I guess I'll let The Orville satisfy my hunger for Trek for now.

Because they are still an old-school TV company, who haven't really got the memo about streaming, and think that their viewers are evil and must be punished.
