I'm not talking about navel-gazing in some Jane Austen trope.

This is spurred by the discussion of Bladerunner.
Deckard thought he was human, and this may have not been settled. Rachael thought she was human, and was disheartened to learn otherwise.
In BR2049, K is taught that he is replicant, but during the film reconsiders the evidence.
Plus, of course,

Select to view spoiler:

the replicant offspring

In The Bourne Identity, he suffers amnesia and thinks he is a fairly normal guy.
This amnesia variant has many examples.
Long Kiss Goodnight is another derived from amnesia.

Total Recall has McQuade thinking he is a good guy, and he seems to prefer this version of himself.

IIRC Superman is raised to think he is human, a Terran.

I don't think Damien Thorne was unaware he was evil, but some films have had the 7th son of the 7th son type thing where they were unaware they were intended to be the Devil's vessel. Demi Moore may have been one with Michael Beihn.

The DaVinci Code has the sole living descendant of JC (not Jayne Cobb).

In Last Action Hero, Jack Slater really believes he is a cop.

In The Matrix habitual miscreant Neo might possibly be THE ONE (duh).

In 12 Monkeys, Cole lives an existence without realizing who he is or will be. Unless you believe the time travel paradox created a memory implant in him.

In Star Wars, Luke Skywalker seems to be raised as a farming family kid, and not much care for The Force.

I think Starman counts - if his dad was an alien visitor.

Films about discovering Dahlia Llamas might be included.
And lost/stolen/kidnapped children. The novels of The Deed of Paksennarien come to mind, but have not been made in film.
I don't think Frodo Baggins was pre-ordained for his journey, was he?

These predestiny entries would include the Dahli Lamas, The Matrix, DaVinci Code, for example.

In Arrival, I am unsure if Louise Banks' involvement is preordained or not.

In Terminator 3, Kate Brewster is unaware that the Future has already defined her place in history, which is vastly different than the life she lives - but I don't think that fits here, without a further discussion of time travel, preordainment and paradox. Same goes for Sarah Connor in Terminator.

I do not consider Norman Bates to be included here.

Ghost In The Shell.
IIRC she was taken from her previous life and wiped, then had false memories implanted to keep her in line. I'm not an expert of this film, so somebody could correct me.

Oblivion. Both of the Tech Team suffer, but she never becomes aware, that we see.

Dollhouse, albeit a TV show. Practically the whole premise of the show.
And it becomes less clear if all or even most of the Dolls were even voluntary, since they had implanted memories of them signing the contract.

I think The Island also qualifies, albeit not in the way I originally percieved this topic.

Dark Matter (TV) which was now cancelled. I won't post any spoilers, but the first episode is about 6 people who wake up out of hypersleep on a space ship and have no idea who they are.

Unknown (2006) was a non-sci-fi movie along the same lines that I really liked.

Five men wake up in a locked-down warehouse with no memory of who they are. They are forced to figure out who is good and who is bad to stay alive.

I generally prefer the TV format these days, but this type of story might be better suited for the big screen in the 2 hours or under format.

I really liked Dark Matter, but I think once the mystery like this was revealed they could have done more with the story. It wasn't bad, and I still enjoyed watching it, but the loss of identity was a major part of the show's identity and when that wasn't a factor anymore it kind of stalled. Just like how the X-Files viewership kind of fell off when the "will they, won't they" between Mulder and Scully ended, I think Dark Matter was doomed to the same fate once you found out who everybody was.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I have not seen either of those that I recall. How long did the mystery last in Dark Matter? A few episodes?

Wow, what a cast for Unknown. The top 11 are pulls, plus early Victoria Justice. Looks like one I should have seen in cinema, but I was busy that year, with limited movie access.

BTW, welcome to Fireflyfans.net Six. This is a forum for fans of the Sci-Fi TV show Firefly and film Serenity. :P

Without looking it up, it would be hard for me to pinpoint when you found out who the cast were (if I recall correctly, only one of them knew at first and the rest didn't figure it out until later). It's a show I really wanted to re-watch now that I'm not drinking, but once I found out it was cancelled I haven't even finished watching the 3rd season.

I'm pretty sure that they kept up the mystery for almost the entirety of the first season, and you were still finding more things out about them well into the 2nd season.

I think the problem with Dark Matter was that even though they did a good job of making you care for the characters, the story after the mystery just didn't have much to it. It's not that it was bad or anything, it's just not really anything that you haven't seen already if you're a fan of sci-fi.

Unfortunately, I can't really recommend Dark Matter now that it's been cancelled. I guess I'd have to see how season 3 ended though before I advise against watching it. I've heard that it doesn't end as bad as Sarah Connor Chronicles did.

If you're into this type of thing though, I would highly recommend Unknown. That was a very enjoyable movie with a great cast, IMO.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I guess Criminal is also in this category. His alter Identity was not voluntary, or consented. But he still has an objective view of the other person in his head. And newfound data, info from the other guy.

Alita: Battle Angel seems to be a solid fit for this type of story.

I think Unbreakable also fits, and therefore Glass as well.

It sounds like Replicas is another entry in this realm.

With Alita pushed back again, now to 14 February, Replicas might have a bigger pull.

This makes me wonder about X-Files. Was Mulder fully self-aware, or did he have hidden memories?

I don't feel Momento really fits in this category, and neither Phenomenon. I guess in Michael the reporters were merely foils without knowing it, thinking they were the ones in control.

To some degree, it seems Colossal would be included.

You never know much if anything about his past, do you?

It's been close to a decade since I've watched it, so I'm not sure about that... My recollection of the entire series though is that you meet Mulder right around the time he met Scully and follow his life at that point but don't really know anything about events that lead up to the first episode.

Some sort of experience that was blocked by mind control to repress the memories certainly wouldn't be outside of the scope of that show.
