To be honest, I was skeptical because of all the Rotten Tomatoes reviews and score. Is it a masterpiece...No. But what it is, is an homage to Freddie Mercury, the much-beloved energizer bunny of Rock n Roll. I was somewhat uncomfortable with the pacing at the very beginning, but overall it was a love letter to the fans of one of the top grossing bands in the world....Queen. Don't get me wrong, the film doesn't soft soap the ups and downs of a rock band during the early days of glam rock. We get the all the good, bad and ugly of Queen from their humble beginnings to their rise to the top of Mt. Olympus where the Rock n Roll legends dwell. They talk about the band's take on music and their belief in each other as top notch musicians, and the band's philosophy of their existence. I could have used a bit more how they came up with music lyrics and melodies, but this was a combination love story, band origin and drama of Freddie's anguish over his bisexual nature. It is both tragic and exhilarating, as we watch Freddie's rise from poor boy to rock god. Rami Malek is truly great in depicting Mercury's energetic existence, but too in showing his overwhelming sadness at being different. He is a tour d' force in his depiction of the irrepressible lead singer. It is quite a treat to watch this film that capture Freddie's essence. Go see it. It's a treat for any rock n roll audiophile, but most especially for fans of Queen. I give this film 3 out of 5 stars for it's overall story, but 6 stars for sheer Rock n Roll goodness. SGG
