What film do you think deserves 'Best Picture' Oscar?

I'm banking on 'The Social Network' to win. A great film that I think deserves all the hype it has gotten.

I didn't see 'Social Network.' Had no real desire to. My vote goes to Inception. I watched it multiple times and I still ponder it fairly regularly. It's not just good because it's open to interpretation, it's good because it's well-acted, interesting, and beautifully shot. I tend to be fascinated by things dealing with dreams in any case.

I'm tied between True Grit and Inception for what I want to win but I can't see the voters going for Inception. It just doesn't seem to fit their usual winner criteria.
The Social Network may get it, it's a great film but I think this will be the night for The King's Speech to get most awards with the other major contenders spreading the rest between them.
David Fincher has a good chance to get Best Director though.

I only got to see The King's Speech, Inception and The Social Network, but of those my vote would go to The King's Speech.

The thing is that they always have the same amount of awards to give out, regardless of how many actually good movies came out in a given year. I haven't seen the King's Speech, don't want to see the Social Network, am not all that interested in Inception but will probably see it at some point, and I saw True Grit, it was good but I think the old one is a little better. It seems like some years have a lot of really good films and some years are a lil' dry. I don't really care who wins I guess. I would like Toy Story 3 to win something though, good ole Toy Story.

Read on only if you want to know the results.

Best Film - The King's Speech
Not a huge surprise but as I haven't seen it and have no real interest in it I can't say how good it really is.

Best Director - Tom Hooper (The King's Speech)
Didn't think he'd get this from what I've read/heard about the film. This seemed like more of a 'give the film another award' type thing. David Fincher should have won IMO if the film wasn't getting Best Film.

Best Actor - Colin Firth (The King's Speech)
Can't talk about his performance in this film but he nearly always turns in a solid, if not great, role. He deserves it for that alone and with all the hype around him could it really have gone to anyone else.

Best Actress - Natalie Portman (Black Swan)
A stunning performance that fits in with the what the Academy likes to see. She deserves the win and is another one who usually turns in solid/great performances. I wanted Michelle Williams to win but she was always a long shot.

Best Animated Feature - Toy Story
Deserved it for a brilliant finale to one of the best trilogies ever.

I haven't seen The Fighter so can't really comment on the supporting role wins. It's another film that doesn't really interest me although I'll probably catch it someday.

The biggest let down for me was that Christopher Nolan didn't get Best Original Screenplay. He thoroughly deserved it. I never expected Inception to get a major award because it's sci-fi and sci-fi never wins but to not give Nolan one was a major snub. At least it walked with some technical awards.

So a mostly predictable night with a couple of snubs (Nolan and Fincher).

maybe it changed with the South Korean movies and shows, maybe it changed before this with DEI and the rise of foreign movies, maybe it was anime or Outsourcing of animation, maybe it was the sleaze and Weinstein scandals and the Will Smith slap

but the Entertainment brands seem dead now, the art long over and the cash cows that no longer deliver

the musicals Emilia Pérez and Wicked got 2 each, Anora was the big winner, they already worshiped it at Cannes Film Festival in May 2024.
