An excellent summary of what's transpired in the Star Wars saga, on and off film, and how we've arrived at the garbage heap that is much of today's sci-fi landscape.

Is it true that they replaced her on the promotional materials with a giant slug character that hadn't appeared in any of the movies yet?

I heard that and laughed, but I don't think it's actually true.

I don't read comics. I've seen the animated Clone Wars show, and it was really well done. But cartoon SW just isn't for me. Even though the character development and story far exceeds what has been shown in the big screen saga. It's just a better product.

Rose Tico, who I had never seen, is a decent character in the comic / animated versions of the SW 'verse.

The on screen character was a dud. A plank of wood that didn't connect w/ the fans who knew the character before her movie appearance. That's not the actors fault, as best as I can tell, it's the writers and director who klunked that character. Just like they did w/ the big silver storm trooper lady. So much build up and then fans got next to no pay off with her on-screen story.

And yes, Rose Tico was removed from official SW merch and in some cases, a giant slug or penis looking creature was put in her place.

It's true. All of it.

I'll hold with my skepticism until I see it actually happen. It's too easy to photoshop things these days.

I should say that I didn't agree with how the actress was treated during all of that crap. I don't know anything about her really, other than the fact that her character was universally hated more than Jar Jar Binks, but I place the blame for that on the direction and the people up top at Disney, and not the actress playing her. People shouldn't have gone after her on twitter. Best case scenario, it just makes any legitimate claims about the SJW bullshit get muddled, and worst case scenario it gives SJW lunatics legitimate ammo to throw back at legitimate criticism.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I've seen them. Doesn't mean it's true until it's true though.

The same sources also swore that Kathleen Kennedy was getting her walking papers a year or two ago and that didn't happen.

Ummm, OK. If you say so. I don’t know how this is a confusing issue, or one to be cynical over. If the SJW crowd is actually getting ticked off at Disney, I don’t know what else to say.

It seems fairly straightforward to me. The Rose Tico character was roundly panned by the audience. The character was so poorly written & in such a ridiculous fashion, and then to have that forced, awkward kissing scene with Fin… It just didn’t register with anyone. If the fans don’t like her, then why would she be on merchandise? Answer - she isn’t. That’s the key. They so disliked her or didn’t care for her that Disney made a money choice.

And FYI, Kathleen Kennedy is on her way out. Because its Disney and the appearance of punting her immediately at the end of the trilogy would be bad optics, and an admission that they screwed up. To avoid that, they are going to let her gracefully slide out the side door.

The SJW crowd eventually gets ticked off at everybody... even the SJW crowd.

It seems fairly straightforward to me. Kathleen Kennedy thought it was a good idea to go around right out the gates wearing a "The Force is Female" shirt that was not appreciated by the audience. She was a poorly programmed NPC who awkwardly forced JJ Abrams out and "expectation subverter" Rian Johnson into directing a movie that didn't register with anyone. If the fans don't like her, than why would she still be heading the entire Star Wars division? Answer - Dunno, but she still is. The fans so disliked her or didn't care for her, yet, when Disney had an opportunity they didn't make the money choice.

What you're talking about is a half measure. You may be right, but it's still just a half measure and should not be respected. Kathleen Kennedy was the real problem, not Kelly Marie Tran. Punting Rose Tico at the end of the trilogy is bad optics, and an admission that they screwed up. Punting Rian Johnson at the end of the trilogy is bad optics, and an admission that they screwed up. But despite all of the money lost, Kennedy still has a job.

Though hardly important by comparison, I view this with the same lens that I view the Trump administration and impeachment. Kennedy is going to be allowed to finish out her term, even though people beneath her are being purged. The only difference is that there won't be a vote by the people to keep her in for a second trilogy like there will be for Trump.

The ones that were celebrating early about the fake news that Kennedy was being fired are just the same as the ones that keep celebrating the fake news that Trump is about to be impeached.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I generally like Tim Pool, but I've stopped watching him so much because he keeps saying there's going to be a civil war, while at the same time disingenuously protecting himself by saying "I hope I'm wrong". There will be no civil war. Every time he says it, which has become more and more frequent, he is degrading his journalistic integrity and making what amounts to clickbait titles.

I'm subscribed to that second guy too, but he was one of the ones that confidently said that Kennedy was out the door after Episode VIII and Solo flopped. There was a troll article put out there by somebody Kennedy friendly as bait and a lot of them took it and ran with it without any skepticism and fact checking and were made fools of.

I'm interested in seeing what Ethan Van Skiver's take is. He's pretty much the only person who's opinion on these issues I'll really give any credence to anymore. The Quartering is still pretty good, but I don't really care for the videos where he's "flexing" these days. I don't care much for it when Second does it in the RWED on this site, and it just makes him look like a big man baby that his critics say that he is.

It's possible. I'll be patient and let time sort it out.

In the mean time, I hope this doesn't kill Tran's career. She was just a pawn in this whole thing, like really all of the actors were.

Maybe I'm wrong, but unlike Captain Mary Sue's real life idiocy, I don't recall ever hearing any of the actors of Star Wars bashing the fans or going full SJW on anybody. It wasn't their fault they were working for a director and higher ups with an agenda.

I guess you're not counting Freddie Prinze Jr ( aka Mr. Sarah Michelle Geller ) then, huh ? He did voice work for some animated SW stuff, but he's not a part of the actual SJW movie trilogy from Jar-Jar Abrams and company. I'm guessing maybe he'd LIKE to be ?

I don't know this channel, Star Wars Theory. Never heard of it before I started looking for more info on this " EPIC " rant by Mr. Geller. I mean FPJr.

So here's this guy's take.

I'm not so much as fan of SW that vouch or rebuke much of what FPJr says, but I'll say that he does contradict himself , so there's that. But also, I am impressed he's got so much passion for the franchise, even as a voice actor ( not a diss on my part, btw ) and it's good to see him care. Even if I don't agree. Probably especially if I don't agree.

I didn't even know that FPJ was even a thing anymore.

I'm hardly a Star Wars fan. Loved it when I was a kid, but the only thing I've ever seen outside of the original trilogy was the first two of the prequel trilogy. Lost interest completely before the third one even came out.

It's only interesting to me now to see just how invasive the whole woke culture has gotten.

I actually sat down and watched Ghostbusters 2016 (for free on KODI) after it was out of theaters. After all the bullshit surrounding it I thought it was a shame they took that marketing tactic and attacked the fanbase. Had they just kept their mouths shut it would have done decent. It wasn't a good movie, but it wasn't as bad as people were saying either.

I wouldn't have found anything about it offensive. But hey... that's just me. I've moved on from a lot of that childhood stuff years ago. When I want to go back to childhood I play retro games. They can't change those.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

The whole SW is just for kids thing is really laughable.

I remember, as a kid, the impact SW had not just w/ kids, but as our culture itself. It was everywhere. SNL did skits, there were freaking disco songs played on the radio to the tune of SW , our local rag ran full on episodes of Star Wars, and I cut them out , collected them in order, and made a book out of them... the original SW was epic. Not just from a little kid's point of view, but on a societal level.

FF to today, and we've got burn out, kids aren't buying the merch because the story telling has become lame and corrupted w/ PC garbage.

And yet they keep insisting on shoving this ' diversity ' crap above and beyond all else, fully convinced that THEY know better, and we're just going to have to swallow it and like it.

Sorry Freddie, that's not how this works.

That's not how any of this works.

All true, but Star Wars also benefited from its time in society. There will never be another Star Wars... not even Star Wars written, directed and acted by the best and the brightest (and hungriest) and void of all wokeness. Especially not in Disney's hands after being purchased for billions, but it wouldn't have happened anyway.

Our entire culture is much closer to "Ready Player One" right now than it was back in the late 70's. Star Wars' only real competition in any media at the time was reruns of Star Trek, The Twilight Zone. Star Trek the Motion Picture didn't even come out until '79 and The Twilight Zone movie didn't come out until 2 years after the trilogy was over. I suppose you could throw in reruns of Night Gallery and The Outer Limits, as well as comic books like Weird Science too.... and sci-fi books. Video games were just a basic destraction at that point, and not these all-consuming epic adventures without an end that we've seen for nearly two decades now.

Star Wars most definitely wasn't just for the kids when it came out. Just like the original Indiana Jones movies weren't either. They were edgy for their time. Han shot first. Indy pulled out his pistol and shot that dude with a sword and started walking away from him before the bullet even hit him.

Somewhere along the line, Spielberg and Lucas had kids, amassed a shit ton of money, and all of the sudden making a movie for kids is what they started doing. The prequel trilogy and Kingdom of the Crystal skull were safe. They were bad. They didn't need SJW bullshit to be bad. They were made for kids.

These two issues are why the woke bullshit isn't working.

A) Kids have a billion and one other things they want for Christmas. It's not just Star Wars and He Man toys, and maybe an Atari cartridge or two. They want a new iPhone or tablet. They want that new $80 video game. They want money to spend on micro transactions. They want toy figures that join up with their video game systems and unlock new parts of games (like with Disney Infinity and Activision's Skylanders... or whatever has replaced them since I don't think they're really a thing anymore in 2019). They want a year long XBox Live membership, or money toward their monthly MMO fees.

B) That being said, the only ones who were really going to buy their toys if the movies weren't the best goddamned thing ever (like they were in the late 70's) was the kids who grew up with Star Wars and had a great deal of nostalgia for it. But they made it very clear that these new movies weren't for them, so they didn't buy the toys and because the kids aren't really interested either they linger on shelves for years after they were released.

The prequel trilogy was bad. That didn't stop my brother from buying all of the toys for it when he was damn near 20, although I'd already grown out of that stuff myself. His basement man cave is full of action figures and other memorabilia junk you get from online subscription loot crates. What isn't down there? Not a single Star Wars figure from the new trilogy.

Star Wars is dead, buddy. But it died a long time ago. Somewhere between the re-release on VHS in the mid to late 90's and the prequel trilogy. It's just a big cash cow that Disney is going to milk for all its worth.

We'll see if they at least learned their lesson on going full blown woke or not. If they have, there might continue to be a Star Wars movie every other year that is at least enjoyable. If not, it will probably go on hiatus again and be rebooted in a few years (like they keep doing with Spider Man).

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I didn’t buy into the prequels, which were by Lucas himself, but after he’d become corrupt & lost sight of the story & how to tell a saga , way back with those damn Ewoks. Expert pilot lil’ Annie Skywalker climbing into a fighter for the first time & not crashing it but out flying true pilots who trained in those ships was, for me, the day SW truly died.

Wasn't Rogue One successful? How did they screw that one up, allowing a release of a film the audience enjoyed?

Maybe I forgot too many details. Luke and Leia were twins, right? But Darth only sensed strong Force with Luke, not Leia, right? Was this some form of sexism?

Rogue One was the most 'Star Wars ' movie of them all ( after the original 3 ) , though of course, the lead character was a female. Note, she was NOT a ' Mary Sue 'character, which is why R1 was actually successful. Her character and the story made sense.

Exactly.
How did KK allow this to happen? Did she get overridden at the last moment when they had to re-shoot the film?
