Any ideas how they're going to handle any of this?

What kinds of movies are going to play?

I can't imagine that any potential blockbusters and movies with large budgets are going to be put out in the near future. Will they try to put movies like The Hunt and Gretel and Hansel back in after their runs got cut short? Would they try to put anything in the theaters that was already released on VOD where most people trapped indoors that were likely to see them already did?

the-numbers.com doesn't seem to have a guess. Their "Theater Counts" page hasn't had any data since March 19th and still shows a blank page for May.

What is interesting to me here is the process. It's all well and good if a Governor of a state comes out and says that theaters are on the list of business they're going to re-open this week or next, but what then?

Most states reopening them now are doing it at 25%. Some at 50%. None more than that. Why would any of the production companies agree to put anything new in the theaters under those conditions?

If I were theater companies right now, I'd be bargaining with the movie corps for the rights to show old classics for the time being. Some smaller theaters around the country have been doing that with great success for years or even decades. Disney itself used to do that with all of its animated features for decades until they abandoned that model sometime in the 80's.

Maybe it's time to test out that model on a wide scale?

I think it would be pretty cool to go see Ghostbusters or Aliens or Caddy Shack on the big screen for the first time in my life.

Not cool enough to submit to TSA style checks at the doors like they're going to do in Texas at the moment. But after that nonsense is over with, I think this could open up a brand new opportunity that wouldn't ever even be considered by the Movie Machine under normal circumstances.

Maybe if bringing back old classics that everybody loved to the theaters proves to be a viable model, they could actually share theater space with the new blockbusters going forward. There certainly is a huge catalog spanning well over a half a century to go through.

And maybe, just maybe... If they can make enough money off of these old properties, they won't feel the need to push so much shit out the doors going forward and we can start seeing an increase in actual quality content being produced again.

Word here his all theaters in NYC and major cities in California may remain shut all Summer, Broadway may not open until early next year. Some films like "The Many Saints of Newark" have been bumped to next Spring, they want to release "Wonder Woman 1984" in August but if the theaters in most major cities are closed will they move that one too? People if states that are still mostly closed (like mine) are more worried about getting a good hair cut and/or getting their nails done then going to a movie right now. The Tom Hanks flick "Gray Hound" is going to a streaming service, I guess that's where many films that were going to be released this year will end up, or bumped to early next year.

Hadn't looked around here, but I'd go. Even if they played some older hit movies. Hard to eat popcorn through a mask though, but I'd risk goin bare faced for the right movie.

I bet they'd offer great discounts on concessions, no?

I doubt they'd offer any discounts on concessions. Theaters make nearly zero on the actual movies they show after lincensing and operating costs. The only money they really make is at the concession stands.

I figure that's why they've only opened about 25 theaters in the country that are only showing two low budget flicks despite the fact that in many states the governors gave them the go ahead to re-open to limited capacity.

Hollywood doesn't want to release any big budget movies under those conditions, and it's cheaper to keep the doors closed than turn on the lights for a very limited house.

I still say that working out a deal to show old movies that have long since made their money back and more would be the best way for them to go. There's got to be a way to do that which would make more money than keeping the doors shuttered and writing off a bunch of losses on their taxes.

I'm sure that idea is already being tossed around too. I suspect the only reason a plan hasn't been implemented yet is because of a fear that the demand won't be there.

Not only do I think they really underestimate the draw that their old classic movies have. But they might actually have a better chance getting people out of their houses and into their seats showing flicks like Aliens and the original Ghostbusters as wide releases for the first time in decades than they ever would by shoveling a bunch of woke agenda shit they were churning out before this all happened.

I heard that some studios are planning on releasing movies in theaters and VOD at the same time, and the theaters aren't very happy about it.

My idea to start releasing classic movies in the theaters is sounding better and better. A lot of people seem to prefer just watching the movie at home. It's a huge rip off if you're just going to watch it alone and pay $20 for it, but a family of four makes out like bandits and can eat all the junk food they want to at a fraction of the price.

Not sure about now. Shirley all of the Despotic Libtard Democrap Power-Grabbing Governors have tried to put them out of business by now.

I wonder if, during Lockdown/shutdown, some of the younger audiences have come to appreciate the older films, when quality films were made, instead of the SWJ and PC and remake garbage generated lately.

I heard there used to be one within walking distance of me 30 years ago. But they turned it into a strip mall. One of the two largest stores shut down 15 years ago and has been empty since. The other one shut down 2 years ago and still remains empty. Even the smaller theater that used to be there was closed before I moved here and remains empty. The only things there now are a dollar store and a Payday loan type place. The parking lot is among the worst I've ever seen.

Sure wish that was a drive in now. I'd probably go there all the time. Especially if they started showing old movies I never got a chance to see in the theater.

I think it depends on their upbringing. I know my brother shows my niece movies like the original Ghostbusters and Goonies. She'll probably grow up with an appreciation for them.

I think it's actually easier with this generation to show them if you wanted to. When I was growing up, most of the "classics" were black and white, and growing up in a full-color MTV world I just didn't want to sit through old-timey black and white flicks as a kid.

What's even cooler is that kids get to see movies like The Goonies in far better quality than my bros and I got to watch it on our tiny little tube TVs. It's pretty awesome that for the last 40 or so years most of the master copies were preserved well and making HD remasters of those flicks is pretty easy to do.

Bummer though. Only 6 states are showing it right now, and I'm not about to take a drive out to Michigan or Ohio to see it.

It seems like a fairly successful market test though, considering a lot of theaters aren't allowed to open at max capacity and people's behaviors have undoubtedly been changed by now. And the fact that probably almost nobody is even aware they're doing it.

Maybe they should actually do a little bit of marketing with this.

It would be silly for them to spend a ton of money advertising each classic flick via traditional means since that would eat up a bulk of any profits gained, but maybe an internet campaign via social media to raise awareness of theaters bringing them back to the theater for new generations to see for the first time on the big screen.

Maybe a website dedicated to the campaign, with the ability for fans of old movies to vote on which movie they'd like to see released next?

With so many of these movies having been remastered from original prints that were much better than the original theater experience and what we could see on our tube TVs as kids, I think it could be wildly successful if done right.

We finally have one theater opening this Friday, and then another next Friday.

Looks like Euphoria is being rereleased,
I didn't find it last year, so be nice to catch it now.

Inception: 10 year event might be interesting, in case they added some extra goodies to it.
And Empire Strikes Back. I might hold my breath at the likelihood of the CGI being screwed up with Jabba, and try to catch that. Hopefully Disney hasn't botched that as well. Oh, wait....Successful film, yep they are certain to have botched it. But I'll try anyhow.
