“How did they fumble this so bad”: Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker 2 Update Upsets Fans as Sequel Aims to Follow The Marvels’ Worst Feature

Joker 2, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga will be a musical featuring 15 well-known cover songs, with a possibility of originals.

Did I ever mention that I hate musicals? I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate musicals.

The only one I think that I could ever watch again is Little Shop of Horrors, just because of the nostalgia. Some of those songs are still stuck in my head nearly 35 years after the last time I've seen it. But part of me thinks that if I did try to watch it again I'd either shut it off or fall asleep in the middle of it.

It needs to make $475 Million to break even.

It's not going to make $475 Million and break even.

People over at the official Lady Gaga fan forum who have already seen an advanced screening of it wonder where the hell $190 Million went and some there are even theorizing this is another Hollywood money laundering scheme.

Plot:
Arthur Fleck is institutionalized at Arkham, awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that's always been inside him.

The movie starts with a two-minute and 30-second cartoon: "Me and My Shadow" with the cartoon Joker starring. I would have walked out of the theater before that cartoon finished. The live-action movie following the cartoon is no better.

Joker 2 bounces between the two ugliest locales in the movie business: prison and courtroom. To break the monotony for the audience, Joker sings off tune with Lady Gaga . . . in his imagination.

The old Hollywood wisdom is Nobody knows anything. But Hollywood survives because it rejects nearly all bad scripts. That unreliable system failed to reject this particularly bad Joker script.

“Nobody knows anything.”

If you work in this business — and Goldman was clear-eyed about the fact that the film industry is an industry first, where art and ideas must serve the bottom line, or perish — it’s worth getting those three words tattooed on your forearm. Or cross-stitched onto a throw pillow for your agent’s couch.

They serve as a reminder to every writer in town to stand by your ideas, because you can never predict what will be a hit — “not one person in the entire motion picture field knows for a certainty what’s going to work” — and every time you compromise your vision because someone pretends to know better, you’re sacrificing the chance to prove them wrong.

Joker 2 was the director not standing by his ideas. Joker 2 was the director burning down the first movie because of what other people told him about it.

Todd Phillips wasn't even making a Joker movie when he made that first one. He never calls the character Joker and only refers to him as Arthur. He's stated now in interviews that he hates comic book movies (good man) and he was just trying to tell a great story and basically scam it as a comic book movie by literally putting clown makeup on it.

He had a good thing going there. Up until Deadpool and Wolverine bumped Joker a few months back, he had the highest grossing R-Rated movie of all time (the 2nd highest when accounting for inflation, since The Exorcist from 1973 made over $3 Billion dollars in 2024 money).

But then he had to ruin it. Because he was listening to Alt-Left media and drinking that Kool Aid.

He actually believes what you've falsely accused me of here many, many times about his first movie. He believes that people walked out of that movie theater and thought of Joker/Arthur as a hero. And like I've told you before, NOBODY walked out of that movie thinking that Joker/Arthur was a hero. (OK... I'm sure there were a few... There is a lot of mental illness in the world... But that did pre-date Covid lockdowns so there was a lot less of it in 2019 when Joker came out than there is right now).

Joaquin Phoenix gave what was potentially the greatest acting performance I've ever seen in my life. I left that theater exhausted. But I've never watched it a 2nd time, and neither has anybody I went to the theater with. It was a brutal watch. I'm glad I saw it, but I don't care to ever see it again.

But somebody whispered in Todd Phillips' ear that he made a modern day hero for all the people that the Alt-Left wants to see dead. To hear him talk now about how nobody understood his first Joker movie and how everybody is an idiot and viewed Joker/Arthur as a hero is is fucking batshit. That's not just the media saying it anymore. Those are words coming out of his own mouth now. And so he went ahead and destroyed the most successful movie he will have ever made in his life by releasing this piece of shit that nobody is going to watch.

Who is the audience for this? Who was this made for?

NOBODY who liked the first one is going to see this. NOBODY from the pink-haired, potbelly, cat-lady Twitter brigade is going to watch this movie. And that's made even worse by the fact that the (allegedly) straight Phoenix just dropped out of a movie where he was going to have some pretty graphic gay sex scenes last minute, basically destroying the chances that the movie ever gets made, so the entire LGBTQIAC3P0+ community has their pitchforks out for him right now. And not just him... Everybody involved in the process of getting that movie made because they chose not to cast an actual gay man for the roll and then he dropped out and ruined the chances that movie ever gets made by anyone. (See Post Below This)

The only audience Joker 2 is going to have is the dwindling 30-40 year old Lady Gaga cultist weirdos, and according to what I read on the Gaga fansite the other day none of them are looking forward to this movie at all and it appears that they're only buying a ticket and going to see it to support her because they're obligated to their aging cult leader.

Personally, I hope this is the end of Todd Phillips' career.

I can tell you for sure that this is the first and last $200 Million budget movie he's ever going to be directing.

This is the movie that Phoenix dropped out of that I mentioned in the previous post. I found this article the other day when I was looking for early reviews on the Joker 2 movie...

Joaquin Phoenix Puts the ‘Quitter’ in LGBTQ

https://www.vulture.com/article/joaquin-phoenix-todd-haynes-gay-romanc
e.html

Quote:

Why did Phoenix leave?

Allegedly, he got “cold feet.” We’d note that it would also require a cold heart to leave fully built sets in Guadalajara, and a crew that is ready to work. Danny Ramirez of Top Gun: Maverick was reportedly set to play his love interest. There has been no comment from Phoenix’s camp yet confirming why he left. There’s reportedly speculation among the crew that the exit has to do with the planned NC-17 gay scenes in the film, but Phoenix is the one who pitched the “love story and with a strong sexual component,” as Haynes previously told Variety. “Joaquin was pushing it further into more dangerous territory, sexually,” Haynes said at the time. What a tease. Lemme Go Berate This Quitter+.

...

Why not just recast him?

A reasonable question. Sources claimed to Variety that Phoenix’s role as a corrupt cop in the 1930s cannot be recast, meaning the crew is now unemployed and losses could go up to seven figures. The assumed issue is that multiple international distributors have already purchased rights to the project with the expectation that it will star Phoenix. With Phoenix out, the contracts for those sales may no longer apply, and that funding is now withdrawn.

How have the cast and crew responded?

Prolific indie-film producer Christine Vachon, Haynes’s long-time partner at Killer Films, confirmed on Facebook on August 9 that a “version” of Phoenix’s departure did happen, and she asked people not to blame the straight-casting choice for the outcome. “And PLEASE – if you are tempted to finger wag or admonish us that ‘that’s what you get for casting a straight actor’ –DON’T,” she explained. “This was HIS project that he brought to US– and Killer’s record on working with LGBTQ actors/crew/directors speaks for itself. (and for those of you who HAVE– know that you are making a terrible situation even worse).”

Others within the industry also seem hostile toward Phoenix over the incident. “There’s been a huge amount of outrage,” one anonymous studio exec told The Hollywood Reporter. THR also reported that he nearly backed out of Ridley Scott’s 2023 film Napoleon, saying he would leave unless Paul Thomas Anderson did rewrites. Once Anderson was brought in, Phoenix acquiesced.

Okay, so … what’s happening next?

Phoenix has the Joker sequel coming out later in 2024, so it’s unlikely that his behavior will put him on any blacklists. While it’s unlikely that an Oscar-winning star of his caliber is going to be stopped from working, Phoenix could definitely face legal consequences. “Back in the 1990s, Kim Basinger got sued for verbally agreeing to do Boxing Helena and then bailing on the project (which wound up shooting with Sherilyn Fenn and flopped mightily),” Ebiri adds. “She lost the case and it nearly destroyed her career. I would not be surprised if Phoenix wound up getting seriously sued for this.”

I'm surprised it made $7 Million last night. Must be a number of fans of the first movie who don't pay attention to early reviews online. Bruce says it's probably going to make only $50 Million this weekend though, which shaves another $11 Million off his model's prediction based off of that preview number. Sure a far cry from the nearly $100 Million they were expecting this thing to make just a few weeks ago.

If the internationals are as bad as you say they are, Jaynez, we'll already know that this thing is toast by Monday morning. International audiences came out and saw the first movie at a ratio of more than 2 to 1 to the US audience when it blew past $1 Billion. So unless that trend keeps up a 2nd time, this thing isn't going to come close to making the production budget back on opening weekend. If you don't remember, a movie that doesn't make 80% of it on opening weekend over the last few years has just about 0% chance to break even, and of those which make only 80% to 100% of the budget back on opening weekend, it's just about a coinflip. And with all the hate I'm seeing from this movie, I doubt very much that it would be on the winning side of that coinflip if it doesn't gross over $200 Million worldwide by Monday morning. I expect a huge drop in the US on the 2nd weekend. The higher the US number is this weekend, the bigger the drop will be next weekend.

I'm seeing this echoed by the critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

"It's boring, it's bizarre and it doesn't have enough Lady Gaga. It's not for comic book lovers, it's not for Little Monsters and it's not for fans of Joker. Honestly, it's just plain weird. "

And none of this isn't something I was saying about the movie over a year ago right here.

I don't know where my posts about that would be now. Maybe in the original Joker thread.

But when I first heard almost 2 years ago that Joker 2 was going to be a musical that starred Lady Gaga I thought that was just somebody trolling and a rumor that was spreading around. Once we found out that's exactly what it was going to be around a year ago I'd already called this one a flop.

Joker 2 Is So Bad It’s Almost Laughable

Even Lady Gaga can’t save this horrible movie.

By Dana Stevens | Oct 04, 2024 4:43 PM

Without spoiling the ending, it’s safe to say that with it, [Writer/Director] Phillips seems to foreclose the likelihood that anyone will be begging for more. That’s probably a blessing for both the filmmaker and us, since this somber, muddled, maudlin film seems to have been made by someone who holds his characters and his audience in contempt.

In ‘Joker: Folie à Deux,’ the joke, unfortunately, is on the audience

By G. Allen Johnson | Oct 2, 2024

“Joker: Folie à Deux” is a traumatizing cinematic experience, so insistent on being grim and static, that one wonders if director Todd Phillips’ goal was to set fire to the whole idea of a comic book movie. Which could be an interesting idea, if executed well. This is not.

And “Joker: Folie à Deux” co-stars Lady Gaga! How can you screw up a movie that has Lady Gaga? Here’s how: make it claustrophobic, with the first half a brutal prison picture and the second half an excruciatingly dull courtroom drama.

The first “Joker” was basically a remake of director Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver,” but it marked its own original territory as a comment on urban blight, harsh capitalism and vigilantism. It was, in fact, a deconstruction of the comic book movie, with gritty, realistic violence instead of the cartoonish action usually seen in DC and Marvel films. Arthur’s murder spree, wherein he becomes the Joker, makes him both villain to the mainstream and cult hero to the oppressed. He becomes a breaker of systems.

In “Folie à Deux,” he has become emasculated.

This is so condescending when they write things like this. It's the same rhetoric that the "mainstream" media has been using for everything from geek culture entertainment to serious political discussion. They ARE the "mainstream", so their opinion is the right opinion. This is a subtle Us vs. Them statement, and they know that people who believe everything that they say are going to (and did) believe that anybody who thought Joker was a great movie automatically loved Joker/Arthur and wanted to emulate him.

This couldn't be further from the truth.

I'll come right out and say it again. Joker/Arthur was an evil piece of shit and nobody should want to emulate his behavior. It's sad that people with serious mental health issues in America are NOT getting the help they need, especially over the last 30 years or so, but that does not justify any of his behavior in that movie. And all of the fatherless, unemployed behavior of the Left since the summer of 2020 carried out by people with mental issues in public should not be tolerated and should be severely punished as well.

THIS is exactly why Todd Phillips set fire to his career. They made him believe that their perception of the audience who viewed Joker favorably was true, while also entirely disregarding the fact that even the Critics who are mostly Alt-Left also gave it stellar reviews and it won awards all across the world.

So, because of this, he took the $200 Million that was given to him for a sequel and set fire to his own career by making something that pleases no one.

I would suggest that somebody check up on Todd and see how his mental health is doing right now.

D. Joker 2 got a D at Cinemascore. Fuck you, Todd.

What does a D at Cinemascore mean? Let's put that into perspective.

The Crow remake, which grossed $15 Million worldwide on a $50 Million budget got a B-.

Transformers One, which still hasn't made its $75 Million production budget back after 14 days got an A.

Twisters, which grossed $367 Million fell short of the $387.5 Million it needed to break even. It scored an A-.

Argylle, one of the years biggest box office flops earning only $90 Million on a $200 Million budget got a C+

Borderlands, almost surely the years biggest flop so far with a $32 Million return on a $120 Million budget got a D+

Other Cinemascores for 2024 flops:

Mean Girls (Musical Remake): B
Madame Web: C+
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire: B+

I Watched ‘Joker 2’ at an Opening Night Imax Screening at the Grove: The Fanboys Were Nowhere to Be Found

https://variety.com/2024/film/news/inside-joker-2-opening-night-imax-s
creening-1236169047
/

During a Thursday editorial meeting, a Variety editor asked if anyone was willing to give up their Friday evening to write a piece covering an opening night screening of “Joker: Folie à Deux.” After an interminable silence with no takers, I reluctantly raised my hand. With Todd Phillips’ previous “Joker,” I watched Joaquin Phoenix transform into the titular Clown Prince of Darkness from a plum seat at the Toronto Film Festival during its North American premiere at a theater filled with journalists and VIPs. This would be a different experience, with me sandwiched in with the sweaty fanboy masses. It turns out I was wrong.

(How is the movie-going experience? Not good. Watch the pirated version at home.)

The couple to my right — two men — moved to two empty seats to my right after the trailers ended. But a minute into the movie, another couple — male and female — arrived and wanted their rightful seats. They stood directly in front of me arguing, resulting in me missing most of the animated intro. Once the heterosexual couple nestled into their seats, they started to get busy. Really busy. Kissing, talking, ignoring the movie altogether. At one point, they were spooning, with their seats fully reclined — the woman (and man’s hand) stretching into my territory. My fears of catching a mass shooter stray were replaced by landing an STD by proximity.

Throughout the screening, the (still not full) theater was filled with constant movement. People coming, people going. To the bathroom, to the concession stand, just stretching their legs amid the 2:19 runtime. A couple of walkouts ensued. It felt busier than LAX, where I had just landed hours earlier. Despite all of the bustle, this was the lowest-energy crowd I have witnessed in some time. No cheers. No laughter at the few jokes. Definitely no singing along to the very recognizable tunes.

Ahead of the screening, the gay couple to my right agreed to give me their full take on the film after “Joker” ended. But the second the first end credit rolled, they made a beeline for the exit along with most of the theater. Only about five patrons watched to see the hundreds of names who toiled on this ambitious project shot here in their hometown.

I made my way to the only one person who looked like a potential fanboy, an empty bucket of popcorn in his hand, as the lights came up. Again, I misjudged. Tedashii was not a self-described fanboy by any stretch. He just liked the first film and showed up for another outing of unabashed nihilism. “Long but enjoyable” was his overall critique. But he, too, struggled with his fellow theatergoers and their lack of engagement.

“There were people next to me whispering and talking, hugged up, kissing. And I’m just like, ‘Why are you spending $50 plus concessions to come here to watch?’” Tedashii asked. “I mean, literally, the judge is hit in the back of the head. And then as soon as it’s done, they’re whispering. And then [Joker and Harley Quinn] tell a joke, and then [his seat neighbor] kisses her. And I was just like, ‘What is happening next to me?’”

it seems like there is a remote chance it could spend another few days at number 1 gathering up cash internationally but soon it will be up against Terrifier 3, a 'Trump' film called 'The Apprentice' the Marvel Disney Sony movie Venom The Last Dance, Hellboy The Crooked Man, Juror No 2, Red One a Christmas theme upcoming American action-adventure comedy film, serial killer movie Woman of the Hour, Gladiator II.

New Hellboy ranking at 31% from critics' reviews positive, with an average rating of 4/10...Hellboy is out now vs Joker 2 but it was already released in June 2024 in the country of Belgium

Joker 2 is suffering
Most are calling it a flop, a loss for the studio

poor feed back, trashed by critics and weak audience scores, the question is how much will it have lost

Well... This happens all the time. Almost every big-budget movie that failed this year, even most of the ones that failed hard, were 1st place in the box office on the weekend. That's just how the industry works and why the release schedule matters so much. Especially when these budgets are so insane. If another mid-to-high budget movie came out that people liked this weekend, Joker 2 would not have taken 1st place.

But it was up against The Wild Robot, a mid-budget Universal cartoon which was out for 2 weekends, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice which has already been out 5 weekends, and Deadpool and Wolverine which has already been out 11 weekends.

Early estimates for US opening weekend on Joker were close to $100 Million. They were then revised down to $70 Million. A few days before release that was dropped to around $50 to $55 million, and now the studio projections are only $40 Million.

It made $81 Million worldwide, which looks impressive compared to the $40 Million US Box office, but the original Joker ultimately ended up grossing 3 times as much outside of the US.

The budget for the movie was $190 Million, which means it needs something like $487 Million to break even. From my tracking over the last few years, a movie that doesn't make 80% of the production budget back worldwide will not break even. There have been some rare exceptions to this rule, but those are really only children's movies that pull off that feat.

I could give a pretty accurate worldwide guess after next weekend, but nothing that happened this weekend suggests there is any possibility this movie grosses anything close to breaking even right now. I would say that $400 Million is the absolute peak it could ever make after this weekend, but I doubt very much it ever reaches that with a D Cinema score and bad word of mouth. I think something closer to $300 Million worldwide is more likely than $400 Million.

Weekend projections: Folie à Deux limping towards $40-million opening

https://www.the-numbers.com/news/257780830-Weekend-projections-Folie-a
-Deux-limping-towards-40-million-opening

Quote:

After Megalopolis’ creative swing and miss last weekend, Joker: Folie à Deux continues the trend this weekend, with filmgoers not finding the musical anti-hero movie to their liking. Warner Bros. is projecting the film will make $40 million by close of business today, well less than half of what the studio would have hoped for when they greenlit the project.

...

There’s virtually no good news to be found in Joker’s numbers this weekend. The model thought it should hit $50 million based on its preview numbers and baseline strength, but it’s falling well short of that goal. Its D CinemaScore tells you pretty much all your need to know (Megalopolis managed a D+ last weekend). A short run in theaters seems a certainty at this point, with $100 million domestically looking like a challenge.

Womp womp.

China is the big overseas box office today...but it will be late opening in Chinese Cinema markets.

the French used to be big cinema goers but that market has collapsed...plus Joker 2 is disliked in France, the Italians and Mexicans are now a bigger market than French with South Korea and Brazil catching French sales or passing them.

some of the French winners in Sept

1Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice Hollywood remake

I assume nobody will watch this

so SPOILERS

here is what they say the plot is

SPOILER!!

its like a boring Hillary Trump trial injury....so in order to make it more 'exciting' Arthur aka Joker dismisses some lawyer attorney team 'Maryanne'? and represents himself at a trial, its a musical and other guys blast the courthouse, guys dressed as joker bomb or blow up the court and help him escape

they say Joker gets raped or beat with a bar of soap and then stabbed to death or abused by guards in jail
You don't see 'A Rape' but after the event he sits with a sore ass his butt checks clenched in a chair with this blank painful stare into space...so he was probably raped.
the prisoners are singing a Christian hymn during the homosexual rape scene...because Hollyweirdo

Arthur aka Joker wanders through Gotham city and encounters Lee aka the singer Harley Quinn? outside his old apartment, but she rejects him, says she aborts the baby or something or wants a new Joker line and pushes him away for renouncing his Joker persona and admits that the pregnancy is nothing or a lie...she dumps him.

there are lots of somewhat random dance or singing number...which seem to be bad according to people who do Singing or Ballroom or Music...its a BAD MUSICAL

some big dude comes along, says he wants to tell a joke and stabs him and says you're not the Joker and says 'Im the Joker'

Arthur aka Joker bleeds to death

Reports are saying ‘Joker2 Folie a Deux’ international weekend opening numbers might be very similar to ‘Morbius’ that strange dark Vampire Spider-Man Jared Leto, Matt Smith, Adria Arjona movie that almost nobody watched. Morbius had a Budget 70-80 Million? while Joker 2 is $190–200 million.

It's much lower than expected. Last estimates coming in expected around $50 Million. The projections were already $10 Million behind the heavily reduced expectations and it ended up over $2 Million lower than those.

$50 Million was already flop territory. With the $81 Million internationally, it still would have only grossed $131 Million on a $190 Million budget and would not have reached 80% of it. With the reduced international interest, I think this needed to make closer to $90 Million in the states if it was going to have a chance of breaking even. In order to have been a sure thing to not lose money, it would have needed in the area of about $125 Million in the states this weekend.

Have you run the numbers yet? I'm thinking going by your previous forecasts it would need 400M from Japan and China to break even-ish and make a little profit...which ain't happening...and then Joker 2 would need to sell a bunch of toys and DVDs and T-shirts get get any bigger profit...which also ain't happening.
Also falls to 2nd place in New Zealand behind The Wild Robot, so the South Korean trend of a falling Joker 2 might continue in other markets.

Schumacher at least apologized for Batman and Robin, but Todd seems to be sniffing his own gay homosexual farts and calling it 'Art' or something? Hollyweirdo corporate propaganda and agendas seem to have killed it also and the Harley Quinn—this is a strange version, the musical element didn't work and it was like some feminist re-imagining

the whole brand of Joker or franchise it doesn't seem to be a Joker or Batman Joker it was its own universe thing more about Riots, his delusion with Zazie Beetz as Sophie with her Karine Jean-Pierre haircut, a Taxi Driver King of Comedy tribute, anarchy on the streets, the rise of Lady Gaga....the whole 'Joker' thing never really felt like Joker to me, I was never a fan of the first film.
joker got old went to jail got gay homosexual and gang raped then some big dude stabbed and killed him, and said No I'm Joker instead...and Gaga seems to have rejected him or aborted the kids or dumped him or something... he bleeds out as an insult to its fanbase.

and finance...have they learned nothing. What the heck are these studios doing with budgets of 200 Million?
they need to keep budgets Low...ok you have exceptions like Spider-Man No Way Home and Wolverine Deadpool but its a smaller market now, the days of the Harry Potters, Avengers Endgame, LOTR and Ironmans is over...keep costs low
Godzillia Minus One Japan had a Budget $10 million-ish and made $120+ million

Joker is a writers disaster. I seen a few clips leak online just to confirm the crazy stuff they said in reviews are true and I'm not sure who stabs him...a random henchman, Connor Storrie’s inmate, Jacob Lofland Ricky Meline, or some psycho cosplay fan the fanatic type of "fan" convict inmate...maybe it was the nutty kid of Robert De Niro tv host...hold on I'm starting to write a better plot than Joker 2 it being such a crap movie....who was the big guy stabbed and killed him? ... in the end I only watched a few mins of it and don't really care

the reviews trashing it are far more entertaining

Joker 2 in its final domestic will be greatly lower than the opening of the original movie, which continues to stand as an October domestic record with $96.2M.

Quote:

The Marvels, which was Marvel Studios’ lowest opening ever last November at $46.1M fell through the floor with a -78% drop in weekend 2 with $10.1M and that was off a ‘B’ CinemaScore.

because it is doing so poorly it risks getting switched out they could put in an old Classic Western or Romance from the US instead, Japan anime like Demon Slayer or One Piece type anime or My Hero Academia could be put in theaters where it fails to earn. Cinemas have to make money they might add a Spanish langauge or weird arty Eurotrash film or a China animation Boonie Bears, or some India Hindi Bollywood thriller thing like the Monkey Man film they might put on re-runs of StarWars, Batman, Spider-Man or some Disney Dreamworks kids animation or re-run old Aliens or re-run some random Horror genre movie instead.

one of the few movies it does compare well to in a Graph is the earnings of Morbius 2022, this Morbius had trouble getting near 100 Million, its final Box office was $165 million and is classed as a box office flop

Mark Hamill is a voice actor who has also portrayed the Joker

Cesar Romero from the Adam West tv series and Lego Joker is thought to be a little to slapstick to be taken serious as a performance, Jack Nicholson continues ranking very high as a performance.

Joker was also played by Barry Keoghan the actor from Chernobyl, Masters of the Air, Saltburn in the Matt Reeves movie with Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz film with the Riddler and Penguin characters.

they cut it from the film

Joker was also played by Andrew Koenig in a fan movie, son of Walter Koenig who originally played Pavel Chekov in Star Trek

Mostly people rank Jared Leto Suicide Squad Joker as the worst but now Joker-2 might rank as the worst?

You can rank this performance next to “Sharon Stone” Catwoman or the freakishly overdeveloped head in the new Marvel Disney Antman flop, Jonah Hex bad guy with John Malkovich, Judge Dredd evil clone by Armand Assante or Batman Forever Riddler.

Farrell or Nicholson or Hardy or James Earl Jones or Willem Dafoe

Joaquin Phoenix he was the biggest thing, it is doubful he will even get a flashback scene in Gladiator 2
There are times when Joaquin Phoenix had amazing performances but then

does he need to do New York and London Stage and Theater again?
maybe he could cook and sell vegan food through some brand or company
Phoenix has an ability for music videos
with these flops has he deranked himself as A-List and now B movie material

it continues to struggle to reach 40 Million?

Warner Bros.'s Joker: Folie à Deux grossed an estimated $1.83M on Monday (from 4,102 locations). Estimated total domestic gross stands at $39.50M.

You could compare it to the trainwreck called 'The Marvels' but it seems to be doing even worse
it is dropping off faster than Morbius which was delayed by Covid from year 2020 to 2022
The Marvels seems to have done better and had a Domestic Box Office $84, Joker 2 could do even worse again.
Worse than Birds of Prey, Madame Web, Haunted Mansion, Blue Beetle?

Halloween season comes soon, 1.8 million would not pay the electric invoice or heating bills in all cinema, the cinemas will probably dump it for a random slasher horror movie soon...overseas world wide are also starting to hate it, terrible feedback everywhere.

I did mention I expected this to behave somewhat like Blue Beetle and Shazam II.

It's still going to do better than both of those because of the international turnout. It's got $115 Million worldwide right now. I don't have the numbers in front of me right now, but if memory serves Blue Beetle and Shazam II both did in the area of $125 - $135 Million worldwide. It's essentially an impossibility for Joker 2 to do as bad as either of them. I think their budgets were only around $120-$125 though, so Joker 2 may still do worse on the ratio than both of them if this downward spiral keeps picking up speed.

It only took 6 days for Joker to fall into 2nd place behind the robot kid movie.

We almost fell to sub-$1 Million in the first week. It sees at least 3 days next week under a million. Maybe even under a million on Cheap Seat Tuesday too.

I wonder if any lessons were learned here.

The lesson is that a Joker movie will likely be successful if the Joker goes on a murder rampage. If he doesn't, the movie will likely fail. In Joker 1, Joker murdered his mother and others. In Joker 2, Joker didn't murder anyone. If the Joker's love interest, Lady Gaga (fulfilling the role of his mother in the previous movie) had been murdered by the Joker, the movie could have been a huge financial success. If anyone wants to test this theory that success follows from mass murder, please plot the movie ticket sales versus the number of Joker's victims in previous movies with Joker as a main character.

Why No One Will Get Fired Over ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/joker-folie-a-deux
-who-blame-dc-1236025585
/

When Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy took over as co-heads of Warner Bros.’ movie studio in early June 2021, one of the first decisions they made was to move forward with a sequel to Joker, the Oscar-winning, $1 billion hit that helped redefine the heights a comic book movie could reach.

Virtually all the key deals were already put in place by their predecessor, Toby Emmerich, with A-list director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix getting $20 million paydays.

One small outstanding matter was Lady Gaga’s perk package. Within weeks, the papers were signed — her pay was $12 million — and she officially joined Joker: Folie à Deux.

Abdy and De Luca could have said no to making the film, but they would have been the laughing stocks of Hollywood, considering the astonishing success of Joker and its record-shattering ride at the global box office, where it ranked as the top-grossing R-rated film of all time until Deadpool & Wolverine came along.

While it is not the lowest North American opening for a pic based on a DC character, Joker: Folie à Deux is major stumble. Yet numerous sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that there’s no studio head in Hollywood — save perhaps for Sony Pictures’ Tom Rothman — who would have turned down making a sequel to a film that was both a commercial and critical hit. To boot, Abdy and De Luca were under orders by Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav to fill a bare cupboard after the studio’s Project Popcorn disaster, which alienated talent by sending its entire 2021 slate day-and-date to streaming service Max. Zaslav also is keen to exploit the company’s IP more fully.

“It is a collective failure, but it was right to make this movie,” says one top veteran producer and financier, who points out that Phillips is a brilliant director who has made Warners billions between the first Joker and The Hangover movies.

There was no test screening, though insiders say this was a mutual decision between the filmmaker and Warners in order to preserve spoilers. That decision does stretch credulity, as the film does not have a particularly spoiler-heavy plot, and even spoilerific movies like Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Engdame had multiple test screenings.

This is about 12 paragraphs of bullshit is what this is.

You can't make an argument that "anybody would have been foolish not to make a sequel after how well the first one did", because that's not the argument to be made here.

No fucking kidding a sequel was going to be made.

That doesn't mean you give the director 4 times as much money and just tell him to make whatever he wants. That doesn't mean you don't intervene immediately when somebody says they're going to make a Joker musical in 2024.

There's a lot of blame to go around for this. And everyone knew this one was going to fail except for the people who made it. I called this a loser well over a year ago when the rumors it starred Gaga and it would be a musical were confirmed.

Honestly... I thought this was going to be one of the scrapped movies after the strike because of the musical thing. But they did it anyway.

As Arthur would have told them, "you get what you fucking deserve".

That goes for your firing choices after this movie too. Keep those people employed for the next flop and we'll see how well you learn your lesson next time.

I'm going to get a real good laugh if tonight's release "Terrifier 3" takes the top spot over Joker 2.

I've never even heard of the first two, but Bruce thinks this is a possibility even though the Christmas slasher will be in just over half of the theaters that Joker 2 is playing in this weekend.

Bruce makes no mention of it in his theater count article, but I'd probably be just as worried about the Robot Cartoon that came out a week before Joker 2 dethrones it. We've already gotten a recent reminder of how poorly an R-Rated movie performs against other movies with Deadpool and Wolverine earlier this year, and 3 of the top 6 movies in 2024 are kids movies.

If Joker 2's hold is particularly weak on weekend 2, and The Wild Robot's hold is particularly strong, there's a possibility that Joker 2 doesn't fare better than 3rd place this weekend. Bruce seems to think that more than one of the new releases this week have a shot of overtaking Joker as well, so that would be really funny to wake up on Sunday morning and see the studio projections have Joker 2 in 4th place.

I don't think it will do nearly that bad, but I base that just on what I've viewed historically in movies. This one's probably a pretty unique case here. Worst Cinemascore of the year (and I've heard some people say in history). A fan base given the middle finger by the director and anyone else involved. The fact that it's a musical.

Who knows... Joker could see something stupid like a -80% drop from its already terrible opening weekend.

Are you aware of the word "conceited"? Terrible things happen to conceited Americans who lack the qualities and the knowledge they pride themselves on having. Conceited Hollywood directors think they know what audiences want, so they don't run test screenings. Same with Trumptards convinced they know the results of an election before it is held.
