Anybody else hear that Ben Browder is joining the cast of SG-1 next season? I found it in a couple places. And Claudia Black may have a semi-recurring role after her guest spot this season.

From what I understand, yes, Ben will be joining as a permanent member, I believe to fill the gap which will be left by Richard Dean Anderson only appearing for 4 eps next season... which blows my hopes of Sam and Jack ever getting together, I suppose.

Of course, I could be wrong... in fact, I very likely AM wrong.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Well, we have seen what, maybe an hour all told of Richard Dean Anderson on camera so far this season? He really didn't want to an eighth season, but Sci Fi threw enough money at him and compromised by giving him limited screen time. Of course making him the SGC commander limits his face time, but still allows him to be seen making everyone happy, right?

I don't know about you guys, but this has not been the best season of Stargate ever. It is better than most shows out there, but it just seems weaker somehow. I always liked O'Neil because he was a wise cracking soldier and could be relied on to make jokes even at the most unappropriate times. It was part of his charm. Now he is not around and SG1 is a 3 person team that doesn't do very much.

I would like to see Ben Browder maybe join SG1 so they have a full team again and can get offworld more.

I was really hoping to see Jack and Sam get together too, but I think the writers have gotten away from the story arc. I don't think we will see anymore on that.

unfortunately, I still resent a little that they canceled farscape and kept SG-1, when Farscape was by FAR the better show. SG-1 has been steadily going downhill since season two, so while Ben can only help the show (and I might actually watch a little more than I usually do - which is just enough to keep from wanting to watch it all the time - I still doubt I'll ever be an SG-1 fan). I was a huge, HUGE fan of the movie, and the changes to make the series have always driven me nuts. Just because they have A stargate doesn't make it STARGATE.

If I recall correctly, they were cancelling Farscape to get "more shows based on movies", which took the form of the god-awful "Tremors : The Series" and probably the formative stages of Stargate : Atlantis, but it wasn't really a battle between Farscape and the original SG-1.

Is it only me, or does anyone else think scifi channel should just never make a show where they've got a ":" in the name ?

That would kind of give away your feelings on "Battlestar: Galactica," I suspect.

Personally, although I'm still getting reaclimated to Starbuck being a kick-ass girl in the reimaging, I'm liking what they've done so far with my beloved BG. But then I once had high hopes for Galactica 1980. Of course I was very young and naive at the time. Now I'm older and WAY more cynical so on that note...

We'll see.

I'll have to agree with BC, though (big surprise) that Stargate just isn't the same without constant face time with O'Neill. Cloning it into "SG: Atlantis" hasn't necessarily helped, although I think that series will stand on its own two feet.

Now, back on topic. Ben Browder on SG can only bring happy things. I mean I can see some shipping going on - since things didn't work out with Carter and O'Neill, that would mean bringing in a new fella, now wouldn't it? Otherwise all we have is Jackson getting beaten up, or taken advantage of and betrayed, by beautiful women every other week. Gets stale after awhile.

Frankly, I'm very unhappy about this news. To have Ben go to the show that SFC kept over Farscape (not to mention its lameness factor) is unbelievable. It's like playing your whole life for the Niners and then going over to the Raiders. And that's really not cool...because I'm not a big football fan and for me to make a football analogy means it's a big deal!

I'm a Vikings fan, so I'm used to disappointment. You learn to roll with the punches after awhile and find a shinier side to the 'verse. It's like being a Red Sox fan, only without actually ever winning anything past the playoffs part.

Shiny side: Ben Browder is working.

Shiner side: Having an actor like him on board is going to make the writers strive to give him stories that he's going to like to do. If Ben likes it, we'll like it.

More of the shiner side: Fans of the man who don't know about Stargate's current lameness factor may watch the new and improved and say, "Hey, this isn't too bad." Ratings go through the roof, we get more improved Stargate with Ben Browder.

Shinest side: Ben Browder is NOT working on "Andromeda." Thanks to the great Holy Whoever for that little benevolence.

Black side: He may come in during Stargate's swan song season, and it may be too late to save anything.

I wholly concur. Not having RDA as a part of the team really takes the dynamic away from it. It just doesn't work for me to have him back at the SGC. I have high hopes that adding Ben into the mix will bring back that smart ass, get it done attitude, and singular lack of tact that O'Neill contributed to SG-1.

And for all you hopeless romantics out there, Jack and Sam were NEVER going to get together unless one of them quit the military, because the Air Force won't allow a romance on the show between two officers. Sorry!

I also concur this season of SG1 is not as good as it could have be, Atlantis is outdoing it (but thats just my opinion, of course). Some times I get the feeling that SG1 just ran out of stories to tell whilst Atlantis being new and all gets the better stories. Also, RDA is only doing four epsiodes next season so they do need another member for SG1 and Ben Browder is a great actor - look at some of his performances on Farscape - the man is brilliant. My only real worry is that TPTB will do a Jonas Quinn on him - no real character development etc. I really hope that this will not be the case. And so I wait with baited breath to see what they come up with next season.

That's why the term is "Hopeless" romantic and not "hopeful." I think anyone who's watched this show for any length of time is well aware of SG's adherence to the USAF guidelines. Rick Anderson just got an award for it, even.

Okay, any sensible person who's watched the show... etc.

And yet the writers teased us - how many times? - with the romantic notions they had saved in their scrap pile. Writers can be very mean!

Besides, if Ben comes on board, chances are it will be as USAF, and that puts the kabosh on the whole shipper theory anyway... why am I still talking about this?

Raise your hand if you actually want to see Sam married to a Deluise... anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Thank the maker for small favors.
I am happy if Ben Browder is happy, however, as many times as I have tried to watch SG-1, I've seen probabaly more than half of the epis, I just cannot get into the show. I've left it on thinking, well at some point it's gotta speak to me, right? I think I just don't care for he characters.
Ben Browder would be a definite improvement, but I just can't see how many more times they can do what to me almost seems the same epi every week.
I'm not even sure if Ben is on that I would watch it "just because", althought it's likely... and I might need a drool bucket.
But hey, I would prefer Henson productions come up with something else for him to do, like a theatrical release, not TV, for him to flaunt his fabulous self.
Scifi chan. must have thrown buckets of cash at him to get him on the show they ditched Farscape for.
Oh, and I find it disturbing that he and the guy that plays Daniel bear some resemblance. I hope they don't do any long lost brother type of story line, that's soooo bad.

Now someone put Lani Tupu in another show I'll watch it too.

In a perfect 'verse, that would be the case. However...

NO! not the long lost brother!!! Anything but that! *chanting to myself* find a happy place... find a happy place... FIND A HAPPY PLACE!

*sigh* well, there's always the option that Ben could be the new big and bad Goa'uld too. Haven't seen anyone even try to consider that yet. Or a member/new leader of the Tok'ra, the resistance group. Now that would be a nice complex character worthy of Ben's acting chops.

I was also under the impression that Jack was going to keep SG-1 a three-person team. Jack has total faith in Sam's ability to lead the team and wants to give her a chance to show her stuff. Going back on that would invalidate Sam's ability and I don't see the writers doing that.

Yes, SG-1 has its own "canned" eps and a lot of them do play out the same. Which is to say SG-1 has saved the universe - oh, a LOT. But there's been others that have tweaked their 'verse a bit. Christopher Judge has written a couple that shook things around some.

But you don't watch the show, so you don't have any clue what I'm going on about, do you? Let's just say this - it's no Joss Whedon/Mutant Enemy production and for me that's okay. It got to the point where I could only handle so many shows where I was screaming at the TV because a character I loved just got killed off. A girl can only take so much. I'm a Gemini - we need variety. If it's unstable in one place, it has to be stable somewhere else. Balance - it's all about balance.

Here's this idea cropping up again.

Why is it that everyone seems convinced Scifi dropped Farscape for SG1? They coexisted for a year before everything went down.....

The most credible story I heard was that Scifi threatened to cancel Farscape as a bargaining move to get a lower licensing fee, and it backfired----their parent company essentially said, "Fine, we don't care."

So this is official then? Nice, I'd love to see Ben as the fourth member of SG-1. As for Rick not being around that much... I don't know, I love his character and I love him as an actor but if he wants to cut back r quit entirely then I'll respect that. He went for eight seasons without needing to at all and I can understand a need to move to new things, like the revival of MacGyver .
