CATEGORY: FICTION    TIMES READ: 1318    RATING: 7    SERIES: FIREFLY

Well my name is Olivia Remy W. I don't know my last name, but this is my story. I have one clue to who I am and that is a bracelet that I have had since before I can remember. My parents didn't want me so I was adopted. I am different then all my friends I know what they say when they don't say anything I know my best friend doesn't really like me but people that don't know me at all know me the best. Zoe is her name she reminds me of someone but I can't think of whom. Wash makes me smile. It feels good to smile every now and then. Inara is kind and gentle like Kaylee they always have a smile on when they see me with Wash. Jayne is a piggy I don't like him. Book is a preacher he tells me my parents had to love me at least a little. Simon says I remind him of someone that someone isn't here anymore he said she died when she was little never had the right chance. Mal calls me Olly every once in a while. It hurts Wash and Zoe to here that. I sometimes feel like I'm trying to fill shoes that are ten times bigger then me. River is like me confused, alone, and scared. Everything is different up here no one tells me what to do or think. Kaylee taught me how to play jacks and I beat her it was fun. Simon and River taught me how to read. Simon said I learned really fast. Mal says I’m too smart. I miss my momma. *** “Olivia, stop messing around this ain’t funny!” Mal yelled threw Serenity. “I need to leave and if you aren’t here I’m gona AHH!” He jumped ten feet in the air when I peeked around the corner. “Did I scare you?” I asked cautiously. “Yes and what were you doing in there?” “Don’t worry sir I had my eye on her she’s not dangerous.” “Well don’t let her in the bridge don’t want her messing with anything.” “Oh my husband already planned on her__” “Zoe don’t even joke about her landing this boat!” I watched them talk about what I couldn’t do and what I could. While they talked I made my way into the galley. Wash was sitting at the table with a string of beads in his hands some what like mine that I had around my wrist. He didn’t look up when I walked in I thought he hadn’t noticed me, but I guess he had. “Hi Olivia, what's going on out there?” He sighed heavily when he spoke. “Nothing really, does Mal like me.” “Yes he does you just remind him, well you remind everyone of a little girl that used to be here.” Wash motioned for me to come over and sit next to him. “Who do I remind them of?” He looked down and started to mess around with the string of beads. “Do you recognize this?” He held up the string of beads for me to examine. “Does this count?” I held up my bracelet so that it looked like a string of beads too. He couldn’t talk I think he might have swallowed a bug because he started to cough a lot. Part 2 “Yes that counts!” He finally spoke. “My daddy made it for me, I think?” It came out sounding like a question instead of a statement. “Well I guess I can tell you a bit about the little girl.” He took a deep breath before starting. “She was about a year old when we decided it was too dangerous here for her, she went to live with her grandparents on Paquinn. She wasn’t there more then two months when they waved back saying she was sick and didn’t have very long before…” He couldn’t finish. “She died didn’t she?” He nodded his head. “I’m sorry. It must hurt a lot having me on board then.” “A little just brings back too many memories. Zoe really likes the fact that you’re here, she says it gives her another chance at being who she wanted to be.” “The girl was your daughter?” “Yeah, little Olivia never really had a chance. Blond hair, blue eyes, loved to play with my plastic dinos.” He stopped again. “I should be getting back to work Mal finds me in here and I’ll be grounded for a week, well that might not be too bad.” He left without another word and Simon came in. “He wasn’t going to tell you any of that.” “Then why did he?” “Maybe he thinks you’re Olivia.” “Why would he think that?” Simon pointed to my bracelet. “She had a bracelet just like that one you never take off. And it was practically one of a kind since he made it.”
