So, a little over a month ta go and we'll hit 2012. Assuming we all survive 2012- Mayan's notwithstanding...

Time for a future-vision eye checkup....Better...or worse??? What do you see for the future? What will disappear mostly or altogether? What do you see yourself unwilling to give up and what will you need MORE of? Do you see more war or will we be done for a spell after Afganistan?

Where do you think you will be in 2032??

Yeah, life is like that. Just when you think everything is set in concrete, and nothing new is going to come along... bam!

Just keep your powder dry, for no one knows what comes next.

As for the larger topic, all naive views of a peaceful, modern planet in the 21st century have long since been shattered. I know I'll never see the utopian future world of Star Trek. Hell, at this rate, the best we can hope for is Logan's Run.

Where'd that cat come from ?

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I intend to retire (or at least semi-retire) sometime after my birthday next year, which will give me a couple of months of leisure before the end of the world in December.

It is hard to predict what will happen next year. Since it is a major election year here in the States either a lot of stuff will happen or else everyone will be hesitant to do anything out of fear of making things worse.

Funny you mention that, I was actually thinking the other day that Star Trek(or sci-fi in general) was part of the reason for a lot of the credit troubles we're having now. I think people started thinking that the world should be all soft rounded edges and nice electronics and and started reaching for that with no ideas on how to pay for it first... It's still a dog-eat-dog world. Captain Picard ain't gonna come save you, heh.

On the war front question, there was an article today about the scaling back of Marines in Afganistan, so that's a step... Now if ol' Kim Jong would just go ta sleep and not wake up, I'd feel a lot safer...

Also, in regards to the first subject...I was also thinking that the emerging youth (and me for that matter) don't really have a direction. Thirty or fourty years ago I think people really did believe we would have hovercars or bullet trains everywhere or that life in general would just be better by now. Now "We're Here" and I dunno about y'all, but I don't have a clue where we're heading. It's almost like I don't have that sense of a future like I did when I was a kid. Maybe we are not far enough into this century for it to have a definition...Maybe this century isn't going to have one...Maybe we will have the Roaring 20's all over again...

I think I'd look good in a flapper dress...with an long electronic cig and a nada colada, heh. Does it come in Synthahol?

I'll be 46, I see myself (hopefully) running my establishment (group home for touched folk, the best one around) managing the staff and looking after folk. Of course for this to happen I see myself with a good business partner to do all that executive functioning stuff that I'm not good at, all the businessy things that involve finances. Whether this person will be a husband or not is up for debate. I've never had any luck with men so what makes me think I will in future. I don't expect to have lots of money or anything, I just want us to make enough for my folk to have lots of fun things to do and fun places to go, for us to employ good people to look after them, for me to go to Ireland once a year or two, to go other places (closer ones, Eire is the only place I'm willing to fly that far and long for). I would also hope that I've garnered a following in regard to my trad singing, I don't want to be famous, but I'd be happy if people come to Renaissance faires excited to see me perform. Note that this is what I want for 2032, in actuality we'll just have to wait and see.

Its creepy how much crap there is in our food supply. Maybe you could get a juicer? You could use it in the summer and fall when fruit is less expensive, it would probably be expensive to use it all year round when produce isn't in season. But it might just be worth it if you're concerned.

It has been a few days let me try this again. Things will get a little worse before they get better. But they will get better, especially after we all admit that greed is a bad thing. Stop promoting greedy self-serving...(you get the idea) into positions of political or economic power. Can I write fiction or can I write fiction?
I hope that by 2032 I will be making living in a way that I love 80% of the time. Writing will work. I will own my own home and have money tucked away for a monsoon season if necessary.

DREAMTROVE

The mayan new age is at the end of 2012, so we have a year still. I think this age ends in a world war. I don't know if Obama will do it, he has expanded the war a lot but he balks at world war, and for that, the neocons might just get rid of him. The person I see as most likely to go for it is Hillary. On the GOP side, maybe JEB, but none of the current hawks seem to be remotely electable, and I sincerely doubt Newt or Romney is going to start a world war. I doubt either of them has ever started a brawl, or even an argument.

Anyway, after the war there will be the chaos, post apocalyptic Cherry 2000 land.

During this time, the neo-fatcats will have become so fat we will call them hippos, and they will propose a new one world form of government called hippocracy.

The glutinous government will exists in bartertowns dotted across the landscape, in some places thriving, like in the toxic orange glow of Frackistan, and other places dwindle and disappear, like in New AboraBorea.

I think I'll be advisor to the king and queen of Dreamland, and I'll appoint Bytemite as ambassador to Fremtopia. I'm not sure what planet we'll be on. Some really dangerous space travel might be involved.

ETA: To see where we might be in 20 years, I suppose it's worth looking at where we were 20 years ago. Smells Like Teen Spirit was playing, Doom was being written, but the concept of electronic finance was me calling a number hooked up to a black box modem to get a screen shot of someone else's stock chart. In fact, that's what the internet was. Genetic engineering consisted of sequencing and what was nanotech? A computer that did 1/1000th of what your phone can do consumed 1000 times as much power. Oh, and we were bombing Iraq.

I guess some things in the world change radically, and others don't. I guess from here I can see clearly that globalism isn't evolution, it's a land grab by some very backwards-minded individuals. I recall designing a social network at the time. It was a school, it consisted of books, posted as files on a server, and people would, in theory, call up the computer and download them to their portable reading tablets, which we had to invent for the purpose, and then send emails about them. It was hard to see here from there, so it must be equally hard to see 2032 from here. I guess it's probably a near-certainty that this reality will contain an artificial intelligence, I mean a truly self-sentient one, and it's pretty damn near impossible to predict what the result of that will be. What if it thinks 10,000 times faster than us? Will its social evolution follow two centuries a week? What online tools will it invent? It's impossible to conceive, I suspect. Perhaps tracking all of our personal information on a computer system is a really bad idea for reasons completely different.. I'm not sure I've even heard the argument before...

Riona, I think they said part of the problem was that the soils these things are grown in are testing high levels, the other part was high levels in the water being used. I use a lotta concentrate, being a traipse from an actual store(our water is pretty good, and I always water it down alot for caloric reasons) so I'm hoping my risk is halved, but still, you start to wonder. I have always hada ton of health problems and I'm the only one in my family who really drinks juice, sooooo. I dunno. Truly everything can kill ya these days. Don't even read the article about China stockpiling weapons...

A Riona a Chara

You're Miss Universe. The human mind has a vast capacity to calculate data, but most of our ability is taken up calculating the information required for visual images. This is why blind people have such a knack for music. The lack of vision frees up their mind to deal with other complex computational issues.

The internet, as it evolves towards singularity, gets increasingly complex to the point where normal people can no longer handle the computational information flow. That's where Mr. Universe comes in. Only he can see, so he's too slow on the neural net to handle the data stream as the signal starts flowing, which is why we replace him with Riona. With direct connection to the internet, she can hear, feel and "see" the net. She becomes an essential key figure to the resistance, but as she does this wirelessly while wandering around at renaissance faires, the alliance is unable to track her down, assuming that she will be sitting in a giant "i'm the target" radio transmitter like the last signal operator.

A DT a chara,

Disappointing. Why does it always seem to come back to my visual impairment with you? Oh well. I'd rather be the other type of Miss Universe, the pretty one. But Renaissance Faires are one of my favorite things, so I guess its not all bad.

Wish I was born that way, I don't know any better. But as often happens, the secret that no one likes to tell parents who have kids with differences, is that if they have one by, say, age 15 they'll end up with another by, say, age 30 more likely than not. Of course that isn't always true, but it sure was for me, mental illness landed on my plate at 13, not the sweet touched kind either.

Are you trying to say that you're nutter butters, 'cause darlin' I'm not following...You seem functional to me. Got good drugs, I take it??

Nervous breakdowns happened alot in the past in my family. I think it's because they feel things deeply, but were always sooo repressed and chastized for it that they just eventually lost it...

I've been telling people of breeding age for a while, if you and your other half have any traits in common, they will most likely be amplified, both in positive and negative ways, and they just stare blankly. I think you can pretty much guess what your kids would be like sometimes...

Hey, I'm pretty sure 20 years from now they'll be able ta grow ya new eyeballs, right in your head. Or is that something you'd even want??

Wish, you can't really get away with that growing new eyeballs thing when someone grew up used to something, that would be like you getting super powers all of a sudden, you'd be overwhelmed. But with little ones they should totally go for it. I don't know any better because I was born that way so it would be too overwhelming for me, not as bad as if someone had never seen and then suddenly whammo, but still a bit too much.

Yeah medicine is a good thing for me. I'm fortunate though in that I've never had to land in hospital so its not as bad as it could be, but it still hurts a lot. I'd rather be touched or be neurotypical, being the "other" isn't fun.
