Since this has nothing to do with friefly (which is why it's not in general), but on our shiny little verse so I'm putting it here.

How many planets do you believe is in our solar system? There are three main beliefs.

1. There are 8 planets because Pluto shouldn't be considered a planet.

2. There are 9 planets because that is what I learned in school.

3. There are upwards of 16 or more planets because if Pluto is a planet there are more pluto-like planets out there.

Me, I believe in number 3, I've studied info on the planets, Trans-Neptunian objects and Kuiper belt objects and realized that some of them better qualify as planets then Pluto and therefor should also be named planets.

I believe in the traditional 9 planets. It's easy to remember the planets this way and I don't believe the others will really ever be accepted as planets. I wish we could travel out there and actually see what's beyond us, as far as I'm concerned alot of the information about the rest of the universe is nothing short of guesses.

Isn't there a probe headed out towards Pluto with the intent of seeing what is actually out there?

Well 2003 UB313 is now under consideration to become the 10th planet but is not due to all of this Planet X talk.

I wanted to be an astronomer when I was a kid. My dad took my brothers and I to the Chicago Planetarium all the time when we were kids. Then I had to get the mandatory public school brainwashing and now I'm just a button pusher.

My programming would only allow me to believe that there is nine planets.

BTW... did you read that there's a planet they discovered 149 light years away from Earth that has 3 suns that they've dubbed Tatooine?

So what if UB313 becomes a planet it may be named Persephone. Dubbed names usually don't become the planets final name. As UB313 was originally dubbed "Xena"

Xena was such a better name. UB313 sounds like a bad band name from the 80's.

Well 2003 UB313 is just its provisional designation, or temporary name until it has been found to have a reliable orbit and has been given its official name.

My vote is for Persephone, or Shadow, then I can pretend Mal grew up there. (In the fictional world inside my head of course) I wonder who gets to make the final decision as to what the name is...the person who found the planet I suppose.

The IAU (International Astronomical Union) names stars, planets, asteroids, and other celestial bodies. They are also responsible for defining what the official classification of a planet is, to be stated sometime this september.

Persephone is Hades wife in Greek mythology, and since UB313 shares a similar orbit to Pluto they will name it after a deity of the underworld.

No, Persephone is clearly the dwelling place of our BDH's and Badger. Also where Mal got to stab Atherton Wing and where Kaylee got to wear her poofy dress. (No, but seriously) I wonder why they name planets after Greek mythology when they could give planets modern names, I guess they're just sticking with tradition. I wouldn't mind if it was called Jayne, that would be fun..."Look, you can see Jayne over on the horizon tonight" Well, if I pretended that any of these far away planets were close enough to see. Thanks for the information by the way, I feel like I'm getting a little lesson in astronomy.

1 Ceres is located at the outer edge of the main astroid belt between Mars and Jupiter

1 Ceres as of now is actually classified as an asteroid, but it is as much as an asteroid as Pluto is.

So according to that 1 Ceres isn't considered a planet(for now) but more a Planemo (planet-mass-object).

Planet Lucas doesn't actually exist, it's just a simple CGI effect (and a quite blatant one, I might add).

Add my name to the "16 or more planets" list. And several moons and moonlets (including the ones mentioned here: http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=7&t=21503). Though I prefer the term "planetoid" to "planemo." It just sounds less silly.

And I hate the "temporary designation" thing. Where's the poetry? Where's the art?

"Which one's P3X-496?"
"The one with the waterfalls."
"Then why can't we just call it 'Planet Waterfall?'" --Ford & Sheppard (Stargate Atlantis)

(And, symbolically, Persephone is a flawed name for a planet: Persephone spent half the year [spring/summer] in the world of the living, and half [autumn/winter] in the underworld. Logically, a planet named after her should have an elliptical orbit, regularly passing near the Sun, then returning to the dark, cold abyss.)

Yes, I to use the term Planemo, as my list of planets is the list of the known planemo's, not including moons.

I love how Ford and Sheperd argue about Ford getting to name things on Atlantis.

Finally UB313 has a highly elliptical orbit, which brings it above the orbit of Neptune but it still remains further from the sun than Neptune.

There is no official way to describe what makes a planet a planet but here are some definitions.

A planet is any object in orbit round the Sun with a diameter greater than 2000 km.

A planet is any object in orbit round the Sun whose shape is stable due to its own gravity

A planet is any object in orbit round the Sun that is dominant in its immediate neighborbood.

The definition of Planemo
An object [rounded by self-gravity] that does not achieve core fusion during its lifetime regardless of its orbit.

Actually it's more of an oblique Transformers reference:

My favourite TF is Sky-byte (because he's a reader and poet and I'm a [former] English major), who is a remold (or was remolded into, I'm not sure) a character called Cybershark. "Snark" is just my usual sense of humour (and I saw the shark/snark freudian slip elsewhere, so I just co-opted it for my own nefarious purposes [or nefarious porpoises]).

So, no, I'm just a sarcastic transforming shark-bot with literary aspirations.

(And now I'm thinking "Cybersnark and the Nefarious Porpoises" would be an awesome band name. . .)

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Just to give you something actually interesting and on-topic to see when you check this:
I think anything that can be classified as a planet should be classified as a planet. What would be so bad about having a bunch of them? Sure the schoolkids might have more to memorize, but I memorized all 50 state capitals when I was in school; I don't think it would strain them. Unless they kept those lame random numbers/letters as names. When they have proper names, though, no big deal. I think lots and lots of planets would be shiny!

But do you still remember all the state capitals?

But I did memorize the list of Planemos, and hope one day they will all(excluding moons) be recognized as planets(except maybe Charon).

Good question. I haven't had to use the knowlege in so long that I've forgotten a few. Let's see... Denver - Colorado, Boise - Idaho, Albany - New York, Baton Rouge - Luisiana, Juno (however it's spelled) Alaska, Honalulu - Hawaii, Topeka - Kansas, Phoenix - Arizona, St Paul - Minnesota, Santa Fe - New Mexico, Cheyanne - Wyoming, Salem - Oregon, Lincoln - Nebraska, Sacramento - California, Jackson - Mississippi, Atlanta - Georgia, Boston - Massachusettes... Gosh, that's all I remember right now. There are even a few states I can't think of, and a others I just can't remember the capitals for. Huh.

Isn't there an Animaniacs song about the State capitols?

(Everything I know, I learned from cartoons.)

Ok, from what I've read and seen on the news so far this is what the planet list stands at now. I think.

1. Mercury
2. Venus
3. Earth
4. Mars
5. Ceres
6. Jupiter
7. Saturn
8. Uranus
9. Neptune
10. 2003 UB313

Mabye UB313 will finally get the name Persephone.

But I'm not sure as they haven't said anything about Ceres or UB313 in a week.

Ok I figured it out.

Origianlly 12 new planets were proposed, they were.

2003 EL61, 2005 FY9, Sedna, Orcus, Quaoar, 2002 TX300, 2002 AW197, Varuna, Ixion, Vesta, Pallas, Hygiea

That was soon shot down and changed to 3 new proposed planets.

2003UB313, Charon, 1 Ceres

That was shot down too and they then demoted pluto as a planet and made a new classification "Dwarf Planets" which are

2003UB313, Pluto, and 1 Ceres.

So now we only have 8 planets.

But there will still be 16 in my mind.
