Special Branch: Lost Friends by WashsYoungerSexierBr

This is a really cool idea. And I do remember you silly!

I have been neglecting these boards sadly. Since last I posted on the Special Branch threads i've moved from the north west to the south east of England to live with Simonwho, who I think still posts here infrequently. We've both pretty rapidly got our domestic on - we've bought a cat called Faran, talked about bills, argued about furniture and gone on holidays and all that couply stuff.

It not all been great though. About the time I left I had something of a breakdown and ended up being off from work for a long time before leaving it completely. I'm now volunteering a little and doing my best to get sane again. Or, you know, just about sufficiently sane to be a productive member of society (or at least to fake it).

I'm not sure I could get back into the story, but I should spend more time here - I do miss this place!

Whoa!! While I never forgot about this thread, I hadn't thought about it in a while, thanks for reminding me WISP!

Yes, I have finished my book... per se, in that I've finished the First draft and am firmly entrenched in the drudgery of the Second draft. Cleaning, polishing and getting it ready to submit to publishers. To that end, my head will not allow me to read while I'm immersed in the world of my book.

How's University going WISP?

Seryn, glad to see you're still about and while I'm happy for your move and all the 'couply stuff', I'm sorry to hear about your struggles. I hope you rebound with your familiar grace and poise.

It's really good to hear from you all.
Sorry to hear about your stresses, Seryn, but glad you're doing ok at the minute, taking things one day at a time. Hope things get back to normal soon

Safe, that's great to hear. I knew you were really progressing with your writing, so glad to hear you've finished the first draft of your novel. You'll have to let us know when it's complete and published, we can all get round to buying a copy!
And TRM, bought a house? Go you!
Everybody's been so busy, feel like I've accomplished next to nothing in comparison.

Just been work as usual for me, went to a convention and met Summer Glau, Adam Baldwin and a bunch of stars from Dollhouse/Chuck and Buffy. And got a couple more coming up this year which I'm looking forward too.
Other than that I just been writing. I joined in the NaNoWriMo competition in november but never managed to complete the 50000 word quota due to a busy social month, managed to reach just under 30000, but I intend to return the story soon. Perhaps I too could finally make headway on my goal of writing a novel!
In the meantime I've still been writing stories involving around Needy and the characters of Special Branch/Serenitree even if the threads have dried up lately.
I've abandoned the larger story (set during the recent thread and flashing back to Needy's past, and forward to his future) for the time being in favour of going back to a story I started a while back and never really finished - the Needy's Destiny prequel. I'm really enjoying it still, but it's just taken a while to complete, and I'm trying to weave it into the Firefly/Serenity storya bit more so it's a matter of making it all fit with the complicated arc.

Needless to say, I've never really forgotten about this thread, in fact it's been my hope that we can get it started up again in the near future, it was always so much fun.

Perhaps when everybody else, or at least a few, are able. We can put some new stuff out there, whether it's a direct continuation of the previous thread, or a "one year later" sort of deal
If not, well then at the very least it will be really great to catch up with all of you.

Congrats on the new house TRM! More space or just better location?

Needy, the NaNoWriMo is a grueling competition. The facilitators from my courses have metioned it. It's good to getting rough copy done. If you're like me, I think too much. It has to be just right before I'll even put pen to paper. Yeah, I'm strange but...

You got a lot further than I would've. Hell I'm just now approaching 60,000 words and that's 14 months worth of writing.

Seryn, Grace and poise entail more than just co-ordination. From what I know of you, trust me, you have both.

Wisp, how could I forget you? Or any of this, for that matter.

I've been working retail for a year, so my time in front of a computer has diminished. Now that I have returned to the office world, maybe I can show up more often. I've been up in Niagara Falls, New York for the past week, to be with my Aunt who passed away Saturday night and we buried today, but once I get home, I'd be more than happy to start more trouble here.

As far as other writing goes, the day I can stick to one idea and write it all out will be wonderful.

Glad to hear that i havent been lost to the winds of cyberspace!

Im currently in my 4th year of 5 studying Biochemistry at Edinburgh. Everythings going pretty well with that. The course is hardwork and keeps me busy though.

Im living with my Girlfriend of 3 years whos american and we plan to move over to the states.

After Special Branch dried up i did some comedy for about a year(stand up and sketches and such) but had to pack it in during my third year of university.

Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges

These are the last two posts from the thread. It starts with a nice recap from Needy about what was going down. In addition to this Kyra had just been kidnapped by the bounty hunter Kurren (written by Jazaf). I was also writing about two agents from Crimson Squad were tracking down Wisp. In the next post Im gonna write how my history went between then and now.

The crew came to a decision. The Dwarf’s mission was not their own, and they couldn’t get involved, but at the very least they could help them get back on their feet. As the captain’s right-hand man Colm ventured into town looking for aid, our band of heroes provided locations of safe houses and government access codes that might assist them, as well as a new shuttle that would allow them to slip by undetected.
Meanwhile Seryn tells the crew about a secret hideaway that her uncle set up in an underground facility.
Seeing it as the perfect getaway and a chance to regroup, Safe gives the go-ahead - allowing Wisp and Seryn to get to work making the needed preparations.
As Safe bids farewell to his old friend Jack who, along with Flechette and Amy, plans to carry on their work in Santos, dark events are unfolding.
Clayton, the reporter that had been investigating Needy’s mysterious behaviour, finally locates the dangerous bounty hunter Kurren at Santos, but he is not out of peril yet. As he attempts to flee from a no-good pilot who feels he’s been “taken for a ride” by the reporter, Kurren himself has made considerable progress - locating the bait for his prize.
The Dwarf’s missing man Colm witnesses Kyra being kidnapped by the gruff bounty hunter, just as Needy awakens from his coma.
Safe and the rest of the crew strive to comprehend the bizarre events surrounding Needy’s recovery, completely ignorant of the fact that two agents of Project Einstein were watching them with great interest.

NEEDY

The Dwarf had been stripped. One could see that it was once a parliament-owned vessel by its design, but nobody could know what its true purpose had been, only its former crew.
Wisp had used his wizardry skills to hack the registration network - as a far as anyone in authority at Lando’s Bay knew, The Dwarf was now owned by a businessman named Krevlock. An upgrade for the man for sure, his shuttle - a simple Class C people-carrier, roughly half the size of The Dwarf - was now in the possession of Liam and his crew. It had been Safe’s doing. Maybe he was feeling generous, or maybe he just wanted the crew finally out of his hair, either way, they were as good as gone.
If only for one last thing.

“Liam’s worried” Maxine said as she approached Safe “he still hasn’t heard back from Colm”

Colm was not somebody Safe had had much dealings with. It had seemed he had made the wise choice to not get in the man’s way. But now he was seemingly missing, and that frustrated the Epsilon’s captain, not because he feared for the man’s well-being, but because it was further delaying the crews departure. It may have sounded selfish, but in all honesty Safe just wanted things to go back to the way they were. Things had become too complicated of late.

“It’s the festival, the broadcast waves can sometimes interfere with our comms.”

“He wants me to go find him” Maxine divulged.

“No” Safe said, “don’t need you running after him and getting yourself lost too”

“I can take care of myself” she said, clearly annoyed with him.

“He’ll be back” Safe said confidently.

The captain didn’t want to say goodbye to Maxine, but he hadn’t wanted to say goodbye to Jack either. But his friend was gone now, along with Flechette and Amy. He didn’t know how the latter would cope, she still seemed distressed over the boy Milton’s death, even suggested that they three should see to his burial. But it wasn’t their job. It hadn’t been Safe’s either, but he had made himself Needy’s keeper now, and Milton was his friend. They would see to it that the boy was buried at the hideaway Seryn had told them about, it would be best. It would be safer.
As soon as they leave Santos, Safe told himself, things would get better.
They had to.

Just then, Safe saw a man in the distance running towards them. It was Colm, right on cue.

NEEDY

"We can help"

Maxine's words still echoed in his mind as Safe watched the crew of The Dwarf leave in the small Carrier vessel. The ship rumbled before slowly but surely lifting itself off of the ground. Seconds later and the craft had elevated itself forty feet into the air and proceeded ventured forward on a steady straight trajectory, before breaking right and climbing towards the heavens above them, eventually disappearing amongst the clouds.

"No." Safe had replied. "You need to go. You need to finish what you've started."

The words pained him slightly. If it had been up to him, he might have welcomed their help, if only to let her stay a little longer. But he had to think of his crew. And they weren't going to be able to move on until the incident with The Dwarf was behind them.

"Seryn" he eventually called out as he snapped himself of his daze. "You all set?"

Antares stood by her ship, her clothes patched with black oil and her gloves greasy to the touch. "Ready when you are"

Safe hadn't yet told her what Colm had told him - that their new passenger Kyra had in fact been taken by a man, likely a bounty hunter hoping to lure her colleagues out into the open. Personally he hadn't seen how interrupting her work would have helped any. He'd already made up his mind what to do about it.

"That's the thing" he answered. "I'm gonna need you to take the lead here."

"Sorry?" she asked

"It's the girl, Kyra. She seems to have got herself in some trouble."

"She's not our responsibility." Seryn replied

"You want to be the one to tell Needy that?" Safe answered back. "Besides, she is. I gave her my word, I wouldn't leave her behind."

"What kind of trouble?" she asked

"It doesn't matter" the cpatain answered, shaking his head.

"You're going out there on your own, and you want me to lead this crew. Any reason you didn't ask Soul?"

"Who's to say I didn't?"
"Truth is, right now, I think you're the safest bet to lead. Soul... he's not been the same." Safe sighed. "Besides, I'm not going alone. It's Needy who wants to do this, I'm just going to make sure he stays safe."

Seryn nodded in acceptance of the assignment, and softly asked, "When do you leave?"

"Now," he answered. "We're going now. Soon as you're ready, I suggest you do the same. Ain't no reason to stay here any longer."

"Okay" she said with much hesitation "I'll send the co-ords to your Nav-com. And I'll see you there. Right?" Seryn said with a hint of concern in her voice.

"Sure," he answered simply. "I'll see you soon"

Y'know, the reason I liked this story soo much, was the ability of every writer contributing to accuartely and respectfully, voice other people's characters.

Damn, Needy, that was some great stuff! No super-heroes, no deux ex machina, no harlequinn.
I think I can come up with some 'in-between' stuff.

So the history that follows is how I saw what happened next leading up to the present. I am quite happy to follow a different future this was just how I pictured it. Im sure we all had our own Ideas of what happened after the threads died and this is mine:

So from the final post on Santos both Kurren and two agents from the Crimson squad were tracking the group. My future saw the CS agents attacking and Kurren taking this opportunity to attack also. A large firefight ensued leaving all the group members trapped under the covers of different vessels. Wisp was trapped by the Epsilon, Seryn by the Nandi, Safe & Co and Soul by the dagger and Needy & Maxine etc by the Dwarf.

In a hasty evacuation all the parties rapidly entered orbit and scattered. Wisp was then left alone on the Epsilon. The interim between then and now Wisp had searched the verse looking for everyone else. In the confusion of the escape everyone had headed in seperate directions with nobody informing the others where they had headed. Wisp was left chasing rumors and news reports trying to find his lost friends whilst avoiding the detection of the Alliance.

I'm so glad you guys have started this up again!
I've had a strong idea of where i wanted Needy's story to go for a while now, so having events set in the future could be a great way to actually allow me to get there quicker, as well as change up some of the characters and see what led them to where they are today.

So how far in advance are we talking? If its really been 2 years since we last properly contributed to these threads, shall we jump 2 years in the story too? Unless you've got a set time line in mind Wisp?
