The President of the United States is saying more than seven things that aren't true a day. SEVEN.

And, what's more, his tendency toward untruth is actually picking up steam. As WaPo's Glenn Kessler, Salvador Rizzo and Meg Kelly note, Trump was averaging less than five false or misleading claims in his first 100 days. (Only five!) But, between June and July Trump is averaging -- averaging -- 16 falsehoods a day. (As a thought experiment, try to lie -- or misrepresent -- 16 times tomorrow. I bet you can't.)

It's not just the raw numbers either. Trump has ramped up his disdain and dismissiveness of all forms of communication that don't originate with him. "Just remember, what you are seeing and what you are reading is not what's happening," Trump said earlier this month. "Just stick with us, don't believe the crap you see from these people, the fake news." On Tuesday, at a campaign rally in Tampa, Florida, Trump said: "You know, polls are fake, just like everything else."

That message is getting through. According to a CBS News poll released earlier this week, 91% of strong Trump supporters say they trust the President to provide them accurate information while 63% say they trust their family and friends to do the same. Just 11% of them trust the mainstream media to provide accurate information.

Yes yes yes, I was about to say the same thing and did so about her, kiki and others trying to get us to explain things over and over as though it hasn't been explained umpteen times already.

It's why I am posting more and more news videos instead of writing about it. Let them argue with whats being reported and those reporting it instead of me. It's also why I am choosing more and more to respond to those who post facts instead of those who troll them.

Well, I guess I had two, so I don't know which one you were focusing on. The perennial one is ...What are America's biggest problems, and how can we solve them? That's a pretty big question, don't you think? But as I worm my way thru the answer to that one, I found another question which is also pretty big, which the The Role of Government. It went like this ...

Quote:

I personally think that's one of the critical questions: What is the role of centralization in the coming storm?

When people face a Big Problem, they tend to look for a Big Fix. In this case, a "world-government" to solve world-straddling issues.
But what happens if the Big Fix is part of the Big Problem? There is a kind of One Ring quality to looking for ever-more-centralized solutions to ever-more-centralized causes. Everyone wants to grab it. Are we sure that Sauron has not already grasped the Ring of Power?

So, looked at this from a different perspective, perhaps the question can be re-framed as What is the proper role of government?

How I got to that question goes like this>>> Sometimes, the government winds up trying to solve a problem that it itself created. For example, the current wealth gap. That wealth gap has been getting steadily larger and larger no matter who is in office. Is "the fix" a government-mandated wealth redistribution plan, as SECOND seems to want? And, if we DO go the route of government-redistribution, might that not cause other problems down the road, such as a dependency on Big Government and people's loss of agency in their own lives? Maybe if we looked into the causes of the wealth gap, instead of simply patching the problem, we could develop a better more robust solution.

So there are several government-sourced causes of this wealth gap that could be fixed. One of them is the current system of "rentier economy", in which the worst form of "rent" is when banks own the ability to create money which they then lend out with interest. (No, banks don't simply lend out savings, that would mean 100% capitalization. banks are at about 6% capitalization, IIRC, which means that roughly 94% of the money that they lend is simply created by them.) So, a change in the "rules of the game" to require 100% capitalization would significantly reduce the hold that banks have on the circulation of capital.

There are all kinds of things I could point to, but I just wanted to give you an example of where I thought that government could eliminate a problem without becoming a larger and larger centralizing force in the economy.

I think these are both very large questions, and also very interesting ones that deserve a lot of thoughtful discussion. They are so multi-faceted, as each question has entire OTHER questions attached to them, it would be fascinating to go down some of these bunny-trails with other people.

Signym, while you are wrapped inside your abstractions about "robust solutions" to the "people's loss of agency", Trump's right hand man signed a contract for his personal "government-mandated wealth redistribution plan". And the topic is "Why Trump is a Scumbag". Or maybe it should be "Why Trump Hires Thieves/Liars/Crooks" :

The Wall Street Journal reports that Franklin Haney, a big donor to the Trump campaign, offered Michael Cohen a $10 million contract if he could wangle a huge federal loan for a couple of nuclear power plants.

Under the contract, Mr. Haney agreed to pay Mr. Cohen a monthly retainer in addition to the $10 million success fee if he could help obtain the funding, including approval of the full amount of the project’s application under a U.S. Department of Energy loan program, the people familiar with the deal said….The Wall Street Journal couldn’t determine how much Mr. Haney may have paid Mr. Cohen, if anything, in monthly retainer fees.

….James Thurber, a professor of government at American University, said success fees are “outside the ethical norms” among Washington lobbyists and are frowned upon. Century-old court rulings deemed fees contingent on lobbyists obtaining public funds or killing legislation unenforceable and counter to public policy, saying they encouraged corruption, he said. Several lobbyists contacted by the Journal said $10 million was an unheard-of sum to pay a consultant for government-related work.

Wow. Success fees are “outside the ethical norms” for lobbyists? I didn’t know that anything short of engaging a hit man was outside of ethical norms for lobbyists.

More at www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2018/08/who-ratted-out-michael-cohen/

Special note for Signym -- examples of government redistribution of wealth:
“You will not be paid for your land,” Pres. Andrew Jackson to the Seminole Indians.
“You will not be paid for your slaves,” Gen. Grant to slave owners.**
“You will pay Social Security for your employees,” Pres. FDR to employers.
“You will pay Medicare for your employees,” Pres. LBJ to employers.

**As late as the Hampton Roads Conference in 1865, Lincoln met with Confederate leaders and proposed a "fair indemnity", possibly $500,000,000, in compensation for emancipated slaves. Compensating the slaves, instead of the slave-owners, was not on the agenda.

I know I posted this before, but it bares repeating. One of the reasons for
my laughing fit.

Quote:

Yup. Everybody would still be living in caves and straw huts without us.

It was, my laughing fit, in response to this statement ("without us" I'm guessing refers to white folks). Perhaps my statement regarding "white men"
singing the blues triggered that response. It was not meant to be a racist
statement, but rather a commentary on the response by racists in this
country, or better stated, white racists in this country.

The white racists lamenting their lot in life and how they have been subjected to the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. The grip on privilege slowly, methodically switching back to humans of color. This country was invaded by white europeans who systematically destroyed the natives, and anyone else who got in their way, robbed them of their culture,
heritage, diginity, their form of civilization. Let me copy and paste the above once again to be clear:

Quote:

They were a civilization with a rich cultural heritage...rivaled the greatest cities of Europe in size and grandeur.

"Grandiose civilization" does that sound like huts and caves to you? Yes, early man lived in caves, but they were "men" of color. The Vikings were barbarians who emerged from caves. The Moors once ruled a vast area of Africa and parts of Europe. The Moors were black peoples. Modern day alphabet and math originated in Egypt. The Pyramids, they were caves right?
They stand to this day. Built by slaves and engineered by people of color.

One final thought........

I want to leave this post on a positive note. Just to show that I hold no grudges or animosity. I give you the grass roots genius of:

Quote:

Pedro Albizu Campos was a Puerto Rican attorney and politician, and the leading figure in the Puerto Rican independence movement. Gifted in languages, he spoke six. He graduated from Harvard Law School with the highest grade point average in his law class, an achievement that earned him the right to give the valedictorian speech at his graduation ceremony. However, animus towards his mixed racial heritage would lead to his professors delaying two of his final exams in order to keep Albizu Campos
from being the first Puerto Rican law valedictorian.

At the outset of WWI, he volunteered and joined the US Army. He was honorably discharged in 1919 as a First Lieutenant. He received his law degree in 1922. He clerked for the Supreme Court of the United States and
held a diplomatic post in the State Department before returning to Puerto Rico. He accepted a professorship at the UPR (University of Puerto Rico).

Not bad for a poor barefoot boy that once lived in a hut.

It appears to me that as Mueller and company get closer to interviewing him, along with indicting more people in the Russia probe, the more desperate he
becomes.

And notice his rallies are also becoming more frantic and chock full of lies.
What could possibly be going on in the news today that has him nervous.
Could it be the Manafort trial? Now he sends out his cabinet to assure the American people that there's nothing to see here and "we're" looking into
that 400-lb guy hacking away in his bedroom.

No collusion.

Now that the power dynamic pendulum is swinging in the opposite direction, that point is moot. Hence the Trump desperation and greediness tour.
One thing that the new power mongers have to adapt to is the "American Dream" dynamic.

It is not awesome that Trump hasn't started a war. He'd have to persuade the Pentagon and they won't fight unless he explains why and he hasn't been able to. You do remember his Fire and Fury tirade? That had no effect on the Pentagon. And North Korea didn't believe him, either. So nothing happened, despite North Korea NOT doing what Trump demanded, even after the meeting in Singapore. Trump has forgotten what he wanted from Kim.

Here is an example where Trump does remember accurately what he wants from one month to the next:

Trump's nomination of Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court deserves special attention. We know he’s starkly, extremely, anti-labor — way to the right of the mainstream, and well to the right even of most Republicans.

The best-known example of his radically anti-worker views is his argument that SeaWorld shouldn’t face any liability after a captive killer whale killed one of its workers, because the victim should have known the risks when she took the job. But there’s much more anti-labor extremism in his record.

But why would Trump, the self-proclaimed champion of American workers, choose someone like that? Why would he do all the things he’s doing to hurt the very people who gave him the White House?

I don’t know the answer, but I do think that the conventional explanation — that Trump, who is both lazy and supremely ignorant about policy details, was unwittingly captured by G.O.P. orthodoxy — both underestimates the president and makes him seem nicer than he is.

Watching Trump in action, it’s hard to escape the impression that he knows very well that he’s inflicting punishment on his own base. He’s a man who likes to humiliate others, in ways great and small. My guess is that he actually takes pleasure in watching his supporters follow him even as be betrays them.

In fact, sometimes his contempt for his working-class base comes right out into the open. Remember “I love the poorly educated”? Remember his boast that he could shoot somebody on Fifth Avenue and not lose any voters because they are stupid?

Anyway, whatever his motivations, Trump in action is the opposite of populist.

Also, if you look at the GINI (inequality) index of each state, three of the top five worst inequality occurs in Dem states (CA, CT, NY) and some of the most equal are Republican states. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_Gini_coefficient

Quote:

Taxes, tariffs, the demolition of established law and institutions, etc. You know this. - SGG
I look at the net effect. Did Dems create more equal GINI indexes? Not that I can see.

Quote:

I think these are both very large questions, and also very interesting ones that deserve a lot of thoughtful discussion. They are so multi-faceted, as each question has entire OTHER questions attached to them, it would be fascinating to go down some of these bunny-trails with other people.- SGG

I don't know what to say, except that this subset within the Community heading was built for just that...discussion. All within the parameters set by the thread topic. Agreed. Let's discuss the role of government as affected by the current administration. I think that would certainly be interesting.- SGG

It sounds to me like you're assuming that if Trump goes, corruption just somehow magically stops? Don't you think that's sounds a bit ...er ... limited?

But, sure! Let's discuss this in another thread!

What are American's biggest problems .... under the Trump administration ... and how can we solve them"

Where shall we discuss this? Just create the thread, point the way, and I'll be there!

It sounds to me like you are assuming that the Federal Government is in control of America. That was never true. Signym, whatever problems you list for America, those problems are less urgent for the Americans with more money and more power than the Feds. I’m certain that the top 1% or 2% have almost none of the problems on whatever list you might create.
https://dqydj.com/net-worth-brackets-wealth-brackets-one-percent/

The Americans that have the power to solve Signym's problem list are the same Americans who have almost none of those problems. They don’t have much motivation to solve other Americans’ problems.

Do you see the problem about solving American problems when the most powerful group of Americans, more powerful than the Feds, have no legal obligation nor personal need & desire to solve them?

Net result: nothing solved on Signym’s list of hypothetical American problems.

America is run more like a Kingdom than a Democracy, but the King is far weaker than the 6 million in the American nobility, the Overlords. It is not a very exclusive group. You can buy your way into the lowest rung of the nobility with as little as $3,000,000 net worth.

When America has an energetic King, a President such as FDR, he will keep his powerful nobility in their proper place. For example, FDR replaced Henry Ford because he would not convert his factories over to War Production. Henry Ford the Second was released from military service to became the new CEO of Ford, replacing his grandfather. If the American nobility is to be kept more or less in its proper place, the President has to guillotine the stubborn ones. The rest will then take instruction. But Trump is not a strong president. The rich can do whatever they please and Trump won't even pretend to stop them.

He helps the American nobility to cheat on taxes, as he helps himself. The IRS is auditing the fewest Americans since 2002. The nobility, the rich Americans, love that about Trump.

The rich can do whatever they please and Trump won't even pretend to stop them.

If the last time that we had an "energetic" king was FDR, then we've had a whole lot of compliant Presidents (of both parties) since then, and Trump is just another in a long line of weaklings.

But that still leaves us with the question about America's biggest problems, under Trump. If WE .... the peons .... can't figure that out for ourselves, then the lords and lordlings will continue to have their way. This is a discussion that you, SECOND, seem absolutely determined that none shall have! Every time it comes up, you try to thwart it.

****

So, what is so hard about brainstorming a question. Haven't you ever been in a brainstorming session before? For THIS question ("biggest problems for Americans under Trump") first, we define the problem ... for example, I'm sure there will be a lot of discussion about "what is an American?" and whether or not we should restrict the list to Americans, or not. Then we start simply developing an unrestricted list of problems, where everyone just adds "problems" to the list as they think of them...

YOU (SECOND) for example might list
Pussy-grabber
Racism
Money-grabber

THUGR might list
RUSSIA!!!

CC might list
Immigration policies
Russian connections
Social policies (re-igniting prejudice against gays)

etc ....

When we have all added everything we each think are the biggest problems, we go through and discuss them one by one to see if they really rank on the "biggest" list, if they should be crossed off, or if a different problem should be added. Retention on the "biggest" list should be by EVIDENCE: preferably NUMBERS of people affected, or some logic which demonstrates that although only a small number of people are DIRECTLY affected everyone is indirectly affected (for example, there were relatively a small number of slaves in the USA, but the entire economy of the south was affected by reducing the value of labor.) Once we have it narrowed down to (say) the top 10, then we can start on ways to solve them, following the same "list" procedure.

It's not rocket science. In fact, it's an easy procedure, it just takes a lot of time. Also, it takes "active listening", lots of questions, and goodwill... no trolling. But it's extremely valuable as a way to promote better understanding between people, because each person has to explain their POV in detail WHY they think that their POV makes sense. Sometimes, answers comes out that surprise everyone, even the person speaking. It can even be lots of fun! I hope that since the question is rather abstract, there shouldn't be a huge emotional investment in the answers.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Here's my contribution:

America's biggest problem, humanity's biggest problem, and the world's biggest problem is nuclear war. We could end up at 'game over' in minutes. We need to solve that.

It's second biggest problem is nuclear power. We have two festering sores that will leak radiation to the end of human history unless we figure out what to do with them, and apparently, we don't care if we get more. Along with that, we haven't figured out what to do with the waste from any of the 460 existing power plants and 60 under construction. Not that this is all under our control, but the consequences visit us nevertheless.

I have others I would like to mention, but that'll have to be later.

I'd include nuclear war as a top problem, too. Not only is it a dire consequence, it would affect every single American, rich or poor.

Climate change ... I'd put that in my list of problems that will affect most Americans negatively, and is already affecting many Americans negatively. Also, it's a problem destined to get worse with time, and not better. In fact, MOST environmental problems trend this way.

I would say the "wealth gap", but that is just a symptom of deeper problems IMHO, so I'd put that one off for a while.

A non-robust economy. Too centralized, too parasitized, too corrupt, too divergent, and too fragile to survive even a moderate shock.

A fractured society consisting of rampant individuals. It's impossible to address ANY of our problems if we refuse to work together and, in fact, refuse to to recognize that "society" exists ... or even should exist ... where we all (or nearly all) have some things in common.

U.S. officials are choosing to disregard Donald Trump’s orders. It’s an alarming dynamic, of course, because our system of government isn’t supposed to work this way, but it’s nearly as troubling that Trump doesn’t seem to notice. He seems to make official declarations, assuming his orders will be followed, but he fails to do any follow up.

On his first day in office Trump all but sabotaged the White House hiring office and, in consequence, appointed hardly anyone to subcabinet posts out in the executive agencies. Every student of government knows that controlling the bureaucracy is crucial, and to do that you need your own people in as many jobs as possible. Everyone knows this. But Trump doesn’t care. He's a scumbag.

They told us they could hit a couple computer keys and reunite all
the kidnapped asylum seeking children with their parents. Until a
federal judge actually ordered them to do it, that is, and then it
was like no way can do.

The final court imposed deadline has now passed. The Trump evil
Keystone Cops administration officials were given 30 days to get
these lost children back with their families. And STILL nearly 1,000
are in indefinite confinement limbo.

Their parents are begging for us not to forget them.

So what's the excuse now, other than the fact that they have already
trashed the records of who the rightful parents of these kidnapped
children are, or are at the same time aggressively trying to move
these children into foster homes to make the kidnapping permanent?

HHS now argues that many of real parents of these children are
so-called "ineligible," as if they happily signed away their parental
rights. When the truth is that they were stampeded in mass cattle
call court appearances into signing pieces of paper they could not
understand, while being told if they did not do so they would never
see their children again.

At the same time these children were lied to and told that their
parents had actually intentionally abandoned them. When the truth is
they were forcefully deported, even as they were pleading for return
of their children.

Trump is fond of calling the investigation of his crimes a disgrace,
and a stain on America, repeating himself like a interminable broken
record.

The cruel and heartless stealing of these children is the real
disgrace, the real stain on America. Though so many other Trump
scandals are competing for that title.

And the only way to wash away the stain is to hold Trump fully
responsible for everything he is responsible for. Not only is Trump
smearing the foreign election conspiracy investigation in general, he
is growing increasingly ugly in his attacks on Mueller personally,
yesterday accusing Mueller himself of doing "dirty work."

That's not going to go over well with those at the Special Counsel's
office, who were already intensively monitoring Trump's each and
every tweet for evidence of intent of obstruction of justice, that we
can tell you.

We can't think of a better way to make Mueller more determined than
ever to throw the book at Trump, even if he wasn't already planning
on indicting Trump while in office (our longstanding prediction). All
Mueller has to do is ASK Rosenstein for permission to do so. Any
opinion that he cannot or shouldn't is just that, an otherwise
non-binding, much lower that Supreme Court level, administrative
opinion.

Mueller is strongly motivated to see justice DONE. He lives for
nothing else.

And justice will NOT be done by just delivering an investigative
report to a Congress that will never convict Trump in the Senate,
even if impeached in the House, because Republicans are only
interested in nullifying Mueller's conclusions. If Mueller did not
know that already, the increasingly strident attacks on him also by
Congress should deliver that message quite clearly.

SCUMBAG!

If you believe that our "institutions" include bombing the snot out of foreign nations, control of our politics by a tiny elite, hemorrhaging money into our military-security complex, laying open the USA to exploitation by foreigners, and causing internal dissension through liberal application of identity politics ... well, yeah, I guess I'm against those "institutions".

I'm all for the left beating the fuck out of the KKK and the make-believe Nazis (come get your tiki torches). There is no room in this country for
Such deep seeded hatred and cruelty.

The scumbags in HHS and Homeland Security need to be locked up in the detention centers. They need the same treatment they gave the young children.

Nope! The left joins conspiracy cults like RUSSIA!!!, promotes violence against other Americans, and cheers on Presidents who bomb kids to smithereens.

You really should look in a mirror sometimes. (Unless, of course, you have no reflection?)

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Oh the irony-SGG
Indeed. That someone like SHINY who pretends to be "for" the United States would support such anti-American activities.

What Russia Understands about Trump

He cannot admit to accepting help, even from his own family. When he was about to default on his debts for the Taj Mahal, a lawyer bought $3-4 million in chips but placed no bets. This sum was very close to the amount the casino needed to make its first payment. Fred Trump, the father Donald Trump idolizes and whose virtues and business acumen he extols, was the man behind the bailout. Why couldn’t a wealthy father simply help his son financially, directly and out in the open? To do so would force an admission of defeat from someone with “killer instincts” to win. This explains why Trump compulsively denies and obfuscates what he knows to be true—that Putin helped him win the White House. “His fear, according to one of his closest aides who spoke on the condition of anonymity,” noted The New York Times on July 18, “is that any admission of even an unsuccessful Russian attempt to influence the 2016 vote raises questions about the legitimacy of his presidency.”

It was weak? If you don't think Russia! is a real threat then you are either a Trump dupe, a Russian shill, or just ignorant. Or maybe all 3.
